RedShell Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 ...and it looks like it's going to be a very similar story to the Wii U, i.e. minuscule 3rd party support and basically nothing but Nintendo titles. Reckon you would still buy one, or not? (This is excluding whatever the system specs may be, online functionality etc., as to not complicate things further. ) For me, as frustrating as the situation with Wii U has been, looking back on it now (even with also owning a PC and PS3/4) there's absolutely no way I could've gone without playing the great games that got released on it, especially Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario Maker! So yeah, just curious as to how many people here would still consider Nintendo's own content enough to invest in yet another console, solely for the exclusives. P.S. Please be excellent to each other. Thanks.
drahkon Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 Without knowing how much it will cost at launch and how Nintendo's software output will be my answer is: No. If the price is reasonable and Nintendo promises no droughts, my answer is: No. I haven't missed playing Nintendo games in a long time. I've played all of the big Wii U games and I won't comment further because we all know what will happen.

So yeah, just curious as to how many people here would still consider Nintendo's own content enough to invest in yet another console, solely for the exclusives. P.S. Please be excellent to each other. Thanks. The Wii and the Gamecube were never enough for me personally. I was a multi-platfrom gamer back in those days. As I've gotten older, my time for gaming has shrunk and I barely have enough time to play everything I want on my Wii U and 3DS. The fact that they are only going to be supporting one console is great for me! I still have my PC if there's something I really want to play that's unavailable on NX. I completely understand that Nintendo doesn't do enough for most gamers, but I'm in that minority, I guess, that is content with that. Personally, I don't want to spend money on another console just to play a few releases that I could probably pick up on Steam anyway and that will run on my PC with the graphics on the minimum setting.
Kav Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 Without knowing if there's improvement with their online features, no. The majority of their games don't cut the mustard anymore as a result of lacking features and those that do are too few and far inbetween to justify the purchase of a console.
Pestneb Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 Looking at how much time I have sunk into lego city, mario kart 8 and splatoon.. that pretty much justifies the purchase. I don't have that much time for gaming, so actually a more compact library suits me perfectly. I'm not looking to buy it for a year or so though, until online on splatoon and mk8 dies completely I'll be more than happy with my Wii U, so I think a 2018 purchase looks the most likely, maybe 2019, by which time there should be a good back catalogue of games to buy into! Smash, Mario Kart, Mario platformer, Splatoon 2 along with supporting games would suffice for me, I've just fired up my wii u to check how much time I spent on games on the Wii U, and its currently at: Splatoon 450 hours MK8 195 hours Mario Maker 145 hours Hyrule Warriors 100 hours Lego City 90 hours Super smash bros 65 hours Wii Fit U 60 hours Earthbound 35 hours Your shape 30 hours Rayman 30 hours Art Academy 25 hours That's 1135 hours which works out as 47 whole days of solid gaming, if I had no sleep. Then there's the time that I spent on other games (I've only listed games registering over 24 hours) Over the time I've had the Wii U, that works out as 1 and a half days worth of use each month on average, with an average month allowing 20 days worth of waking hours. Take into account work and it drops to ten days, add in time for meals and it drops to maybe 9 days. So for my time that is available, I used about 15% of it using my Wii U. That's huge. I already use a bunch of my time gardening, diy, astronomy, socialising etc. In terms of games I want to play my list shows where my gaming tastes are. Assassins creed and need for speed clocked up nice play time, but when competing against Nintendo they just lose out - they aren't as good value for money for me. Rayman was a great game, I loved that so well done ubisoft, I think the your shape software is ubisoft too? so for me ubisoft should be priority number 2, followed distantly by EA. But really 3rd parties aren't important to me, which makes me part of the problem for 3rd parties
Hero-of-Time Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 P.S. Please be excellent to each other. Thanks. I'll probably still be there day one. Despite my frustrations with the company, I still love their games. Platformers, both 2D and 3D, are a big passion of mine and Nintendo really nail that genre. I'm also a big fan of the art style they use and it's a nice contrast to the different titles I play on the other consoles. I have two big issues with the company. One is how they handle the online side of things and the other is the gaming droughts. I don't believe that they will sort out things like notifications, party chat and their general attitude towards online gaming as a whole. I do believe, if these rumours are true of course, that the drought problem will be a thing of the past, with both their handheld games and consoles games being on a single platform. This would please me greatly, even if most of the games are Nintendo made. I may criticise Nintendo a lot but it doesn't stop me from playing and loving their games. Team N for life.
Pestneb Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 The biggest gap for me on Nintendo platforms was shooters - I love them so that was perhaps the main potential draw to the other two consoles. Splatoon is enough for me on the fps front, though I would love a red steel game perhaps from ubisoft for give a little range. Racer wise, mariokart is good... tbh I'd prefer a burnout style game to come out too, need for speed was good fun but there were too few people online a lot of the time... I think I got to play with people from N-E once or twice, and that was fun. Games like mario maker, lego city are great single player experiences, and even hyrule warriors was a good way to sink a few hours, although I would have appreciated an online mode for warriors - I can imagine battling for control of the map being pretty fun
Fierce_LiNk Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 I went with no. The crucial bit of the opening post for me is "...and it looks like it's going to be a very similar story to the Wii U, i.e. minuscule 3rd party support and basically nothing but Nintendo titles." I've got a problem with Nintendo adequately supporting a console for more than 2 years. From experience, their support seems to drop massively after that marker and the console seems to limp on (usually with a gap) until they reveal the next system. I paid what seemed like a good price for the WiiU at the time, but one which I mostly regret when looking back. A Nintendo-only machine doesn't appeal to me, especially when I look back at their previous consoles and remember what great third party or exclusives there were that came from outside Nintendo. I want Nintendo to entice me back, so we'll see what happens there.
Sheikah Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 Well after the last-gen spec Wii U launched at £300 with a bungled OS there's literally no way in hell I can even half contemplate buying one of these at launch. Depending on whether they come up with new ideas and more exciting games, I might get one.
DuD Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 As I've gotten older, my time for gaming has shrunk and I barely have enough time to play everything I want on my Wii U and 3DS. The fact that they are only going to be supporting one console is great for me! Minus the 3DS bit, this describes me perfectly. I have 3D World, Captain Toad, Tropical Freeze, Rayman, plus more Wii U games to complete / actually start. Then there's games like SSB4 / Mario Kart that i've put very little time into. Then there's all the VC / eshop games. I could probably go through to 2020 before completing my backlog, and even then theres Wii games I never finished, and before that GC games. I will never catch up, although that won't stop me getting an NX as soon as there's something I want to play. Splatoon 2
bob Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 Well I never intended to buy a Wii U, but got one anyway, pretty much just to play Mario Kart. I don't think that'll happen again though. There'll have to be three or four games I want in order to entice me.
Londragon Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 It'll be day one for me or there about, will have to import a European model for eShop, reviews, etc. (that's why I hoping for a region free approach). With very little time to actually game, the quality and quantity of games on the WiiU has suited me down to a tee. Wish I could play some more, what with a large Wii U and 3DS backlog, and more on the way, but both ways, with excellent 3rd party support or not, it'll be my only console. The other companies don't cater to my sensibilities, or for such diverse, entertaining, and quality family gaming. Some of the best games I've ever played came out the Wii U, and I expect no different from Nintendo's next.
Falcon_BlizZACK Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 (edited) I vote yes, but only just. Personally, Nintendo games are still only the games that truly capture my attention. I'm not one of the gamers that felt 'burned' by the Wii U and I had my fair share of good experiences with it and I'm not begrudging Nintendo because they don't do exactly what I want - I truly believe them being around this long, they know whats best for themselves. However, since the Wii my enthusiasm for gaming has dropped and I believe this is partly due to Nintendo's standards dropping and the oft droughty experiences of owning just a Nintendo console. Seeing my favourite series of all time become a puppet to motion controls in SS and the overall quality of its content decline has put my excitement at a all time low - Breath of the Wild slightly brought me back up though. I can't see how the NX will be any worse than the Wii U offerings with the apparent conjoined development teams - but if I'm left in another drought within the first 6 months, I'll likely ditch it. Glen-i Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 Yep, and everyone here knew my answer anyway. It's never stopped me before and it's not gonna now.
V. Amoleo Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 Yeah I'd still buy it on day one. I have the other consoles for non Nintendo games these days.
nekunando Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 There are so many factors that we're not aware of that make this a difficult question to answer, and yet there's one factor that makes it so easy to say YES.. Nintendo People can debate the lack of quantity and diversity of the software all they like, and it's a valid argument, but ultimately there are always considerably more games I wish to play on Nintendo platforms than anywhere else. With SNES, N64, GC, Wii and Wii U, Nintendo have always provided me with my main console. I picked up a PS1, PS2 and PS3 a lot further down the line to check out several of the games I felt I had missed out on in each generation but I'm starting to find that the number of games I sometimes glance over enviously at on other platforms is diminishing to the point where I no longer feel that desire to check out the competition. The PS4, for example, may eventually muster up a catalogue of games that I personally wish to investigate at some point but I currently possess no interest in either it or the XBOX One. I simply can't get excited for either platform The lack of third party support on Nintendo's consoles is an ongoing frustration, but not so much that I'd rather go elsewhere for my entertainment. In fact, there aren't even many third party titles I actually crave anyway The lack of quality football games has been one of the biggest problems for me over the years meaning I've always had to look elsewhere. I love Pro Evolution Soccer on Wii but the lack of enthusiasm for the controls amongst my friends meant multiplayer sessions were impossible and we'd ultimately end up playing the traditional versions on PS2 or PS3. As much as I generally dislike FIFA, if we got a 'good' version of it on NX it would help to fill that void.. though I would prefer to see PES return to a Nintendo platform Whatever the case, I'm sure I'll get NX when the time is right but probably only when the games I want are there. If that's at launch, it'll be difficult to resist How could I possibly miss out on the next great 3D Mario game, Mario Kart 9 and further instalments of The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, Metroid, Excitebike, Wave Race, F-Zero, 1080, Pilotwings, Starfox, Splatoon or whatever else Nintendo decide to unleash..?
Happenstance Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 I very much doubt I will buy the NX at launch but if I do get one, it wont be because of Nintendo's games. More just that I am weak and when it comes to consoles I tend to buy most of them sooner or later. I am very much burnt out on Nintendo's home console offerings. I've enjoyed some of them over the last few years but they've basically been nothing I feel like I would have missed if I never played them. The NX does have the handheld side going for it though, I have enjoyed those a lot more.
Guy Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 I would, without a doubt. I buy Nintendo systems to play Nintendo games at this point.
Nolan Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 No, but I'm sure I'll get it at some point. I didn't get the Wii U until the Windwaker bundle. I'll likely wait for a good library of what I want to play to be available. Unfortunately that makes me part of the problem. Not supporting the console makes 3rd parties less likely to support it as well. It's a pretty shitty cycle.
lostmario Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 That would make it another Wii U so no. Nintendo games just don't seem to interest me anymore, the ones they have released recently anyway. 812 days since I last bought a Wii U game, 812 days! Regarding the 3DS, my last two games were Monster Hunter games (two 3DS titles bought in last 16 months) so you would think that would be the title to make me buy an NX but no, the last one (Generations) lasted me 3 weeks before I was bored of it.
Mandalore Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 Depends on the Nintendo games. N64 or Gamecube quality and depth of titles and I'd be very tempted. Wii and Wii U, no thanks.

Pestneb Posted August 20, 2016 Posted August 20, 2016 (edited) Curious which game (and how you know 812 days.) 365 days in a year, 730 in 2 years. 2 months = ~60/62 days, leaving 20/22 days . so 2014, June 2014 less the days, so May 2014. I'd suspect MK8 is the last game purchased on release (May 29, 2014) hence the precision in the date. Edited August 20, 2016 by Pestneb
Clownferret Posted August 20, 2016 Posted August 20, 2016 Yes for the portability aspect alone. Plus you simply have to assume they have learnt big lessons from the Wii U and will ensure they have 3rd party support.
