Wii U General Discussion

I hate to be 'negative' but lets face facts. The press and the wider public BOTH got mixed up with what the Wii U was.

This happened for two reasons;

Firstly the name was unclear and didn't actually tell the public what the product was. This first problem was further compounded by the issue that the Wii had many add-ons, accessories and games with similar sounding names to the Wii U.

Secondly Nintendo focused on the game pad and not the 'box'. What's more the 'box' looks pretty similar to the Wii as well so it adds to the confusion.

Now don't get me wrong, there's no excuse for lazy reporting or copy paste articles from journalists. But unfortunately a large onus rests on the company to ensure they name and market their products in such a way that the right message is sent out and there is as little chance of confusion or misrepresentation as possible. Nintendo managed to confuse the press and the public alike. Basically the name was awful and the marketing was just as bad.

I just watched it again. Seriously, what on earth are Nintendo thinking?

Quoted verbatim from the ad:

“Do great games require a game pad?

No, not really.”

Take the USP and diminish its importance. Smooth. Probably the most honest piece of advertising I've seen in a while, though. Great games definitely don't need the game pad. Suddenly I have a little more respect for Microsoft's hesitance to take and risk with their marketing (not much more respect, mind you).

All I'm saying is that the confusion shouldn't have happened. I know that it did, but it shouldn't have. Simple as that

We can all agree with that, but you seemed to be suggesting the onus is on the press alone.

Nintendo are the most to blame here, for reasons pointed out by others, and it is nice to see that they are trying to clear up matters. But at present it feels like too little (or too ineffective) and possibly too late.

Not surprising but Bethesda claiming that the Wii U isnt on their radar.

Shame really as something like the Skyrim Legendary Edition probably would have been good for the console. Game with a bit more scope to it.

This story keeps popping up. Not sure why they keeo getting asked the same question over and over again.

Just watching a video for Wii Party U...

It's made me think Nintendo aren't approaching the Gamepad in the right way?...

It almost sells itself better as a standalone product... but then I guess people have tablets for this kind of stuff...

But as I said earlier, why Nintendo aren't doing more little apps for the Gamepad for families to sit round and play, I have no idea. Board games, and Mini games etc...

Should the Wii U have launched with a compilation of 50 mini-games like above?... as it's equivalent of Wii Sports... packaged up in a Mii format... well basically, should it have launched with a game like Wii Party or a Mii Wario Ware?

Those types of 'all players round the gamepad' games look a lot more fun, than only one person getting to use it, whilst everyone else just syncs up their Wiimotes, as is the case with Nintendo Land.

I'm almost tempted to get another one as it's a great controller (not that I've had much of an opportunity to use it :indeed:) and it'll be useful to have it in preperation for stuff like Mario Kart 8

Managed to get it even cheaper using Flubit. £22. :D

Now I'm wondering if I should have got more than 1. Hmm.

I've put the Pro Controller through Flubit and got a £21 quote back, which seems like really great value. However I can't imagine it getting any use until Mario Kart shows up, is it worth holding off?

I bought four Wii U Pro Controllers from Amazon when they were £26-plus-some-pence in May (minus 1/6th because I don't pay UK sales tax)! They cost from NOK 390 here, about £43, so that's why I bit without hesitating! Half price for me!

I now have had four sets of Wii Remote Plus & Nunchuck for years now, and with my four new Wii U Pro Controllers, I am now ready for any and all local multiplayer fun! I have had three and four player sessions on my Wii U lots of times already, leaving only five players yet to be done.
