    • The game looks unbelievable! I'm feeling genuine excitement for a game for the first time in ages!
    • I got some proper weird screenshots tonight. What's up with the formations? The Miis must be discussing how to get into MK World. Wow, you lot suck! Never had 6 people get disconnected. Hope you lot enjoyed Dcubed and me playing local play.
    • OK, Rayquaza is by far the greatest Mega Evolution, but that green noodle was never in OU in the first place, so there was still plenty of opportunities for other non-legendary Pokémon to wreak havoc in generation 6 (X/Y). And yes, most of them are Mega Evolutions. Only 7 of them though, and we've already gone over Blaziken and Salamence. Mega Gengar is one of the many, many Pokémon from Generation 1 to get given a Mega Evolution. The image doesn't depict it well, but it's kind of fused into the ground now. You'd think that would put a dent into the Speed stat, but... Gengar gets no boost to its Attack stat, which is fine, because it doesn't need it, any boost to it would be wasted. So with stats like that, Mega Gengar has to be a glass cannon, right? Hit hard, and hit fast, before you take too many hits. Nope, I mean, it can do that, but that's not why Mega Gengar was banned. Yeah, it's the ability. It's one you might recognise. Shadow Tag: The opponent cannot run nor switch while this Pokémon is in play. The opponent may still switch by using Baton Pass, U-turn or Volt Switch, if it is holding a Shed Shell or is a Ghost-type. Oh no! It's Wobbuffet's ability! Mega Gengar is what happens when you take that ridiculous ability, and put it on a good Pokémon. Unlike Wobbuffet, Gengar has actual options when it comes to the moves it can use. It could do the whole power thing with that sky high Special Attack. Generally, you'd utilise status effects, and then Hex, with Focus Blast for coverage. But because it can trap Pokémon, you can do all sorts of shenanigans to make your opponent hate you. Chief among these is the Perish Trapper set, a downright degenerate strategy that uses Perish Song, a move that makes all Pokémon out in battle faint after 3 turns. Normally, switching a Pokémon out stops the effect of Perish Song. Can't do that with Shadow Tag though. The idea is for the player to identify a defensive threat, a Pokémon that is only using one attack, etc, send Gengar in to trap it, and then stall for time with Protect and Taunt. Gengar can swap out on the final turn, leaving it's opponent to their fate, and to possibly do this schtick all over again. The problem with Shadow Tag is that when you see the 6 Pokémon your opponent has before the battle begins, seeing something like Gengar means you now have to play 4D Chess. Are they gonna send out a lead I would expect? Or are they gonna try and trick me by trapping my first Pokémon? But what if I send out a Pokémon that can deal with Gengar, only for my opponent to not send out Gengar? It gives a major advantage to the person with Shadow Tag before the battle even begins. There were a lot of arguments over whether Mega Gengar should be banned, or whether the Shadow Tag ability should get the chop instead. Eventually, both of them got banned, but Mega Gengar got the honour first. Does that mean it's good in casual play? Most Pokémon that can Mega Evolve tend to be good in the games they can do so. But CPU's almost never switch Pokémon, so Shadow Tag is squandered there. Still, nothing that a bit of brute force with 170 Special Attack can't fix. Yeah, it's good.
    • Coming out only two weeks after the PS2 version in the US is a big improvement over what we saw on the N64, but this of course was not the same in Europe, where the game was much older by the time the console came out.  Unavoidable, but also quite unfortunate. Thankfully this is a really solid version of the game, featuring all of the content of the PS2 original, coupled with improved performance and better loading times.  So it was quite the statement of intent from both Activision and Neversoft coming off the N64, which always saw very late and highly compromised ports.  Though the Xbox version (which came out later) has the best performance, as well as an additional level (The Oil Rig) and an additional character (X-ray); it doesn’t take away the sheen that THPS3 would’ve had at the GCN’s launch. As for the game itself? This is the last of the classic THPS gameplay format, with smaller stages designed around the 2 min lime limit.  The Revert is a true game changer, to the point that the lack of this mechanic can make it rough to go back to THPS2 (let alone the OG).  It was so groundbreaking that the remake of THPS1 & 2 actually went out of its way to implement the Revert, despite never appearing in either game.  The level design is once again superb, and even more dynamic than before, with moving cars, obstacles and pedestrians.  It’s very much the apex of the classic format and one last hurrah, before Neversoft began moving more towards an open world format with future titles.
