    • That's really interesting.  Had no idea that Shiren 2 had a monster capturing mechanic! No doubt it was inspired by the then-new Pokemon boom... kind of ironic that they came full circle on that when Pokemon Mystery Dungeon happened! It's also really interesting how the Shiren The Wanderer series has always remained (largely) a Nintendo console exclusive (save for some occasional late ports elsewhere), despite many of the spinoffs coming to Playstation platforms.  I guess Nintendo publishing Shiren 2 here on the N64 really helped to cement that platform association (as did the lower costs of publishing on the Wii and DS compared to the HD consoles of the day of course).  Good move on Nintendo's part in the long run, as Pokemon MD ended up being the longest running and most successful spinoff series in Pokemon's history (and the Shiren games didn't do too bad for themselves either). For Shiren 2 here, it's a shame that it ended up coming out so incredibly late in the N64's lifecycle; as the console was basically already dead & buried in Japan by this point.  If it had come out even just a year or so beforehand, it probably would've done much better.
    • Shiren the Wanderer 2: Shiren’s Castle and the Oni Invasion JP release: 27th September 2000 PAL release: N/A NA release: N/A Developer: Chunsoft Publisher: Nintendo Original Name:Fushigi no Dungeon: Fūrai no Shiren 2: Oni Shūrai! Shiren-jō! N64 Magazine Score: N/A The Shiren the Wanderer series is a spin-off of the Mystery Dungeon franchise, a series that has used multiple IPs throughout the years – although the latest two games (as of 2024) have also been Shiren the Wanderer games. These are games about progressing through randomly generated dungeons to achieve a goal, a style of game I personally hate that is often referred to as “roguelike” (with the original Rogue being a direct inspiration for Mystery Dungeon. In Shiren the Wanderer, you get tasked with building a castle entirely on your own, to help defend a village from regular Oni (Japanese demon) attacks. It’s presented in a humorous way, and throughout the game, some fun characters crop up to help you out (a few even venturing out with you). In order to build a castle, you need to ascend the nearby mountain in order to collect the building supplies, discovering harder routes as you progress. As you build the castle, the story will progress, with cutscenes and events happening at certain times. Every now and then the Oni will attack the castle, and if you used lower quality parts, you may lose parts of the castle, and need to rebuild. This does mean a lot of repetitive work in order to grind all the resources needed to finish the castle. Once you do, you get a large final mission as you take the fight to the Oni in order to reach and defeat the final boss, using a limited amount of items you’ve found, and some of your allies to help you out. Combat is simple (you whack an enemy or use arrows, then they all attack before you can attack again), but there’s depth to your equipment, as well as having to keep a hunger meter topped up. But the game isn’t over when you complete the main story, that’s just one part. After the credits are over, you’re introduced to a new underground dungeon, and a monster zoo – an empty monster zoo. There’s a new item called capture pots, which you throw at enemies to capture them (you can also have them fight alongside you), with your goal to catch-’em-all to get all 161 monsters into the zoo – quite a monumental task. It’s all very much like Pokémon, which is fascinating, as there were later Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games – although not about capturing Pokémon. Fun Remake or remaster? An officially translated collection would be nice. Official Ways to get the game There is no official way to get Shiren the Wanderer 2.
    • I assume you said "hyuck" when he asked.
    • Thought I'd also join in on the fun and make a pledge. It'll be a good incentive to clean some of the backlog. Hope to get at least a couple off the list before the Switch 2 arrives! Nier: Automata - Has been in my Steam library for a while, started it once but never got around to playing it a lot. Having it handheld on the Steam Deck might help! Resident Evil 3 Remake - I played RE 2 Remake last year and absolutely loved it. The modern take on the classic RE formula worked perfect, and I enjoyed it much more than RE7. So next in line is RE3 Remake, knowing it's not as great as RE2 but excited to play it. Pokémon Ultra Moon - My gaming cabinet is a bit of a mess, so I want to move all my stuff that's older than Switch into storage. But before I can do that I need to finish a couple of 3DS games so they can get shelved. One of those is Pokémon Ultra Moon. It's also the only Pokémon generation I haven't played a game from, so also need to finish it for completion goals! Tomb Raider I-II-III Remastered - I finished the first game in this remaster last year, but still need to (and want to!) finish the other ones. 2 and 3 are the games I played a lot when I was a kid, so it'll be fun to replay them in a HD sauce. Command & Conquer Remastered Collection - Another one in my pc backlog, a game I picked up a while ago but never played a lot. Not the biggest C&C fan but I do love Red Alert, so I hope to finish both of them this year. The Witcher III Wild Hunt - The big one. It's been in my backlog for quite some time, but never got around to starting it. I've started it recently but feel a bit overwhelmed by it, also looking at the time it takes to complete it. But the setting is appealing and I also recently started reading the books and I already recognized stuff in the short time I played the game. Time to push through, let's see if I can get this one done by the end of the year. Sonic Frontiers - One from the Switch backlog, picked it up in a sale and played it a little bit but was quite taken aback by the horrible performance. Still, I want to see what SEGA did with open world Sonic. Kirby: Planet Robobot - The other game from my 3DS backlog that I need to finish. Cutting some corners here as I actually completed the story mode last week (and loved it!). But I want to play the Meta Knightmare Returns mode as well. Starcraft Remastered - Another RTS (and another remaster, I've got quite a lot of these on my pledge...) I picked up along the road but never finished. Starcraft is my favourite pc-franchise and I've played this game (and SC2) to death already, but not yet in remastered form. And the expansion Brood War is included as well, which is even better than the main game. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity - Cutting corners again as I'm already a dozen or more hours into this, and I usually play a couple of levels in between other games. So it's about time this gets done and dusted.
    • Ollie (who is now 2 years old) asked really nicely for a blue backpack. One of the first things he's specifically asked for that he doesn't have.  Why did he want it? Because of Banjo-Kazooie. So now he has a plain blue backpack and is very happy about it.
