Releasing in Europe in 1986, the NES was the console that helped repair the video game industry after the 1983 Video Game Crash. It's no exaggeration to say that it's one of the most important consoles in Video Game history. The thing deserves a lot of respect, in part thanks to the extensive library of games that are now considered classics. But which ones do you like?

Nominations are now open and will close on Saturday 23rd March.

So I'll get this ball rolling with my 5 nominations.

  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • Earthbound Beginnings (Mother)
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Kirby's Adventure
  • Final Fantasy

Oh right, before I forget. Could someone tell @Hero-of-Time about this thread? I'm pretty sure he's blocked me for some reason and I'm not sure he can see this thread because I started it. Wouldn't want him to miss out.

Why would @Hero-of-Time have blocked you? He's a lovely chap! (And since the final votes are hidden, nobody can possibly hate him when he ends up picking the wrong games! Genius!)

Anywho, here is the ultimate and bestest top 5 NES games evar!

Super Mario Bros 3

The Legend of Zelda

Earthbound Beginnings

Castlevania

Punchout!!

Wally Bear and the NO! Gang
Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom
The California Raisins: The Grape Escape
Big Nose Freaks Out
Frog Adventure

All absolute classics, I think you'll agree.

For real though, I never played the NES, so I'll join in when you get to a better console.

That one sounded so fake, I had to check it out.

Yep, it's real.

This one sounds like something you'd show schoolchildren to teach them about sexual consent.

Close enough, it was made in the 90's. Drugs were the big "Think of the children!" thing back then.

Always amazes me that the almost all of the drug references in N.A.R.C actually survived in the NES version intact.  Then again... that version was made by Rare, so that probably explains the sneak-shit-past-the-censors mastery on display there!

Great idea and very clear OP.

Wow this is hard, only 5 games!

- Super Mario Bros 3
- DuckTales
- Zelda II: Adventure of Link
- Mega Man 3
- Bubble Bobble

Much as I would love to include Ice Climber or Balloon Fight, I can't really justify it.

I remember we once had similar threads for best Gamecube and Wii games. Those were made just for fun (though the Wii one made it to a main site article), and had a simple "list your personal Top 10" system, which were then converted into points.

This system might end up more interesting! I'm so in.

  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Castlevania
  • Mega Man 2
  • Dragon Quest
  • Dr. Mario

It's fun to reduce our options to just 5 games. I'm excluding games based on criteria I wasn't expecting to.

Mega Man 2 over 3? What’s wrong with you people.

I have my reasons. None of which I'm allowed to go through in this thread, as per Glen-i's rules.

But I suppose it's week 2 when we get to discuss these details.

I have only ever played 5 NES games, only through inclusions on other games or Virtual Console and never finished any... so this might be a bit unfair in voting but oh well.

1. Super Mario Bros.

2. The Legend of Zelda

3. Super Mario Bros. 3

4. Metroid

5. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

Never finished any of these games but Zelda I was the one I got furthest in. Deleted my save file for Memory Card space though...
