I've had this urge to play a classic 2D Zelda of late - was wondering how people ranked them. I never played ALttP or Oracle of Ages, so will probably give one of them a go (on VC on 3DS VC). I loved Link's Awakening and Seasons.

As a side note - is there no retro board now? If there is and I've missed it, mods feel free to move this over..

1st: Zelda ALTTP

2nd: Link's Awakening

3rd: The Minish Cap

4th: Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link

5th: Zelda

6th: Zelda: Oracle of Ages

7th: Zelda: Oracle of Seasons

Four Swords Adventures is also a brilliant game (as is the original Four Swords game), but that's a very different beast to the other 2D titles, so I'm not including it in these rankings. Oh and just in case you're wondering, I'm also counting the DS Zeldas amongst the 3D games, despite them mostly taking place from a top-down perspective because significant portions of those games utilise 3D perspectives.

1st: A Link to the Past

2nd: Link's Awakening

3rd: The Minish Cap

4th: Legend of Zelda

5th: Oracle of Ages/Seasons (I count them as one, but if I had to pick one it would be Seasons)

6th: The Adventure of Link

Moved thread to General Gaming.

A Link to the Past closely followed by Link's Awakening. They were my first 2 Zelda games, I must've played through them countless times.

I enjoyed the Oracles games a lot at the time, but I can barely remember anything of them strangely. Played Seasons at least twice using the password system too. My memory of Minish Cap is also very limited, I know I didn't think it was that great though.

I've only had a brief go on Zelda 1 and 2 on the collectors edition disk. Having started gaming with the SNES, I find NES games too old and creaky to enjoy playing. If it was the first thing I'd played as a kid, I'd probably have much more appreciation for them.

No, LttP never clicked with me.

1 aLttP. What else, right?

2 Link's Awakening.

3 Orcale of Seasons (haven't played Ages).

4 Minish Cap.

I'd llke to point out I think all 4 are amazing games. ^^

Zelda 1 and 2 I gave up, however. Didn't like'em.

Unnng. So many people who've only played a single Oracle game! Christ, you guys are missing out! Gogogo 3DS VC downlooooaaddd.

AS for me, LttP was my first so I'm biased and I've also not even really thought about this but;

1. LttP

2. Oracles(both together)

3. Minish Cap

4. Link's awakening

5. Zelda

6. Zelda 2

But really they're all awesome. I assume Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks aren't being counted?

From what I've played:

1. Minish Cap

2. Phantom Hourglass

3. Spirit Tracks

4. The Legend of Zelda

5. Zelda 2

(although there's a big gap between 1 and 2)

Posted

1 - The Minish Cap

2 - A Link to the Past

3 - Oracle of Ages & Seasons

4 - Link's Awakening

5 - Zelda 1

6 - All of the rest

Something like this, yes.

Minish Cap is also my 3rd favourite Zelda game out of all the Zelda games.

Confession time: I've never touched Minish Cap despite having it ever since they released it for free on the 3DS Ambassador Program...

One of those 'oh I'll get round to it' things.

I'm still stuck in the Ice Temple on LTTP 11 years on.

I absolutely adore Link's Awakening DX though.

The ice temple is awesome, it still stumps me until i remember how to solve the puzzle

Yeah, it's having to go to the different floors and push the blocks down a level which always gets me, despite me playing through the game a stupid amount of times. You also have to try and make sure you have hit the right switches so you can actually access the right blocks to push!

1. LTTP

2. Minish Cap

The Oracle games, Links Awakening, The Legend of Zelda, 4 Swords and The Adventure of Link order changes depending on what mood i'm in but the top 2 always remain the same.

100% the same. Precursor to the Water temple without a doubt. I'm sure I've done it at least 5 times, yet every time I've still gotten stuck. Hell I might have another LttP runthrough sometime soon just for the sake of seeing if I get it straight away!

This is a really tough list...

  1. A Link To The Past
  2. Oracle of Ages / Seasons (definitely need to play both for the full experience)
  3. Link's Awakening
  4. Phantom Hourglass
  5. Minish Cap
  6. Spirit Tracks
  7. The Legend of Zelda
  8. Zelda II: Adventure of Link

You can't really go too far wrong with any of them. I wasn't a fan of Zelda II, and both the NES games are incredibly tough. I'm not sure whether you'd put Four Swords Adventure in the list, as it's so different to the others (levels instead of an over world for instance). Going through the list again though - what a great series!

I remember getting stuck in the first room. I tried everything against that ice guy, then suddenly BOOM. Fire Rod.
