When we first heard this story we thought it HAD to have originated over at the Onion, but no, it's real—a 17-year-old student sold a kidney because he couldn't afford an iPad 2, and now he's suffering buyer's remorse.

The teenager, known at the moment only by his surname Zheng, is a student in the Anhui Province. He sold one of his kidneys for 20,000 yuan ($3,085 according to today's exchange rates), but now that his health is declining he's realizing the deal wasn't such a good idea.

"I wanted to buy an iPad 2 but could not afford it," Zheng told the Shanghai Daily. "A broker contacted me on the Internet and said he could help me sell one kidney for 20,000 yuan."

So without telling his parents, Zheng slipped away to Chenzhou City to have his right kidney removed at a hospital that it turns out wasn't even qualified to perform organ transplants. And now that the boy's mother has found out and contacted the police, the broker can't be contacted.

Hey, Steve Jobs! Since the kid showed such Apple love, can you make sure you get him a freebie when the iPad 3 comes out? We don't want Zheng tempted to sell that other kidney!

In what way is his health declining?

Cos, you know, that iPad 2 is going to be pretty handy when he's having all those hours of dialysis for the rest of his life. Now who's the smart one?! You probably all laughed when he bought cloud insurance, too.

Moron. He made his bed.

I didn't see any mention of him being a carpenter. Very confused now in fact...as I had understood it they make a fairly decent wage. Especially if he's....oh....you mean the expression...ah I see whats...

Just...how.....why would....ugh! He has no common sense whatsoever and obviously needs help!

Organs are worth a lot on the black market in China, so I'm not surprised this...moneymaking solution attracted him.

If it was to support your family when there's no money coming in and it's hard to get money, I can understand, but for a bloody iPad??? :hmm:
