In short, it is good news, though I'm scared. - The NHS told me in February of this year the waiting list was currently "at least 18 months" before I'd be seen. - I contacted a couple of private hospitals - I got accepted into one of the best private hospitals in the current for the specialists I need. - I picked a date. Tomorrow I start the pre-op, so the nasty drink, no eating, the whole nine yards. On Tuesday I'll be admitted to the hospital at 2pm and have my surgery in the evening. 2 years, 10 months. I don't actually have the final number of how much this has cost me over the years, but at least £14,000. If any of you see this, please keep your fingers crossed for me Tuesday evening <3 I'm so thankful I am getting sorted. Glad you finally have a date. Hope all goes well! 1
Cube Posted October 4, 2022 Posted October 4, 2022 All the best @nightwolf, you'll do great, and I hope you have a speedy recovery.
nightwolf Posted October 5, 2022 Author Posted October 5, 2022 Thank you chaps! Writing this at 3am because my brain won't switch off. Surgery was a success! In the end I was wheeled in at six pm and came out at ten thirty pm. So far longer than anticipated, but that was just to ensure everything was covered. Pain has been a bit higher than my last surgery, but the team here having been amazing. Money really does talk, so I'm glad I decided to go the private route. Now for six weeks recovery and I should have my life relatively back on track! 6

Ashley Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 Qualified as a personal trainer yesterday. It's nice to have started the year feeling like I needed to make a change and ending it having done so, even if it's not quite the change I expected. I don't think that's going to be my future until retirement or anything, but after years in front of a computer it'll be nice to step away from that. 1 1
Ashley Posted January 18, 2023 Posted January 18, 2023 Finally rebooked my travels recently. I was supposed to go on a year-long trip which started March 1st 2020 and ended 17 days later (no prizes for guessing why). However this time hasn't been smooth sailing either as on Jan 1st I booked a flight to NY then a flight to Hawaii, with the goal being to then book one to Sydney. However, the following day I found out because I went to Cuba in 2017 I can't get an ESTA so that money was down the drain (thanks Trump!) Ended up going to a travel operator who booked all my flights to make my life easier so I'm going to be doing: Australia for about 3 weeks Japan for about 3 weeks Mexico City for 3 nights Costa Rica for 5 nights Ecuador/Galapagos for just over a week Argentina for 2 weeks Madrid for 3 nights Subsequently sorted out accommodation for Mexico City, Costa Rica while Ecuador/Galapagos was handled by them based around the Galapagos tour and I'm just now figuring out the rest but the other places should be easier; I know someone in Sydney, I've been to Japan and familiar with its geography and I went to Argentina last time so I'm familiar with those. It all kicks off a week Monday and I need to leave my flat next Sunday (and get myself to London for the flight) so it's been a busy few weeks doing all sorts to get ready but in two weeks time I will be in the warmth, which given this morning I woke up to snow will be very welcome! Just under 3 months rather than a year this time because I'm in a different place in my life but looking forward to finally doing it. The last 3 years have felt like a holding pattern. 4

The best-laid schemes of mice and men often go askew when met with St. Patrick's Day. Irresistible force, immovable object.

Not even a little prize? Was it Covid? Did you try to get one? I'm sure you can get one with some effort. If I remember correctly I've read a story about a guy who was of Iranian descent who had trouble going to the US, but managed to do it eventually. If he can do it, you can as well. Anyway, have fun, I'm a little jealous.
Ashley Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 I can get an ESTA as it's just an online form. If I would be able to use that at the border was a different question (and seems to be based on whoever you deal with). I could apply for a visa but waiting times for embassy interviews are long. Saw somewhere it's about 9-12 months but not been able to validate that.
Mokong Posted March 28, 2023 Posted March 28, 2023 Bump Got offered and have accepted a new job today. WOHOOOOOOO 4 1
Ashley Posted April 17, 2023 Posted April 17, 2023 Well I've got jetlag. It seems it hits (in the form of not being able to sleep) the day after I fly West. That obviously isn't good news as it's 2:30 here and I'm awake buuuut it gives me time to say I've spent today and yesterday (well technically yesterday and the day before) with @darksnowman in Madrid. Been good to finally meet another person from here and just hang out and mostly have food and talk about laundry (as you do). 1 1

martinist Posted May 11, 2023 Posted May 11, 2023 I feed the cat of a guy down the street from me when he goes out to Greece. Called last night and told me he's giving me 4 tickets to a Rodger Waters concert at the Glasgow Hydro for June 3rd. Going to go up a day early and make a day of it. Taking my brother and my mother since she pretty much begged me. Think my brother is bringing one of his friends. Fun times. 2
