Noodleman Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 Wow, two Herzog reviews within two pages. The original Nosferatu is Werner Herzog's favourite film, and so it was no surprise that his version would be fantastic. I agree totally triforce, and you should really check out the other films Kinski did with Herzog. Fitzcarraldo is the most lauded, but I find Woyzeck to be the best collaboration between them, though if its atmosphere you're going for Aguirre, De Zorn Gottes is the film you want. It's dripping with it and Kinski is insane. Aguirre is absolutley fantastic. I got a Herzog boxset from play a year or so ago with it in.
DomJcg Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 Minority report. Ok, so i just grabbed this out of a draw full of romances, so i wasn't too hopeful. I was, as it turns out, engaged enough to stay awake (i was tired badly too...) but at just under half way through the film, i figured out the plot which is good, because with say, The Notebook i figured it all out when they scanned over the lake in the first couple scenes (yes, i think too much about movies) except for the very ending where the boss gets well you know :P 7/10
Ashley Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 Yeah it is. Last night (the night after it was on TV), chairdriver and I were contemplating watching a film ,and he suggested Sophie's Choice, and I definitely want him to see it as it's great, but we agreed that we were still carrying emotional baggage from DitD. Wasn't aware it was on TV. My friend has had it on DVD for ages and I've considered it but hmm, maybe next time im feeling blah which if patterns show anything should be one day during the week.
soag Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 Lars and the real girl. Great film, would recommand it to anyone. At times I was like should I be laughing as this man needs help. But great film Ryan Gosling should of got an oscar.
Klimop Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 Today i saw... Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) 17/10 as stated, superb! The ending was just amazing Chinatown (1974) 15/10 Great film, best Nicholson I've seen, and one of the best Polanskis. The ending really moved me. The Ballad of Narayama (1983) 14/10 Not really sure about this one, a very good film, but I'm not really into asian flicks and I was falling asleep since I saw three movies in a row. At times really funny, at times disturbing... Speaking of Lars von Trier, I just can't get The Kingdom out of my head Also, Lars and the Real Girl, what was up with the microphone being almost constantly in the picture(frame), I know handling the mic is hard, but there are qualified people to do this job. That really annoyed me! (I worked out my own rating system; when a film becomes art rather than just entertainment points go above 10)

LazyBoy Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 Warlords - 8/10 Cool movie, epic. Very epic. Kind of movie you didn't want to end. Some decent martial arts in it as well. And naturally being a chinese movie it looked gorgeous. Recommended.
Konfucius Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 Four Brothers Awesome film with cool action scenes that greatly benefit of the insane characters of the brothers. Also that strong mix of people and nice dialogue make it interesting. It is also pretty clever how the characters only get introduced once the brothers hear about them. A fairly good story, lots of shooting, good music and a very good car chase - if only it didn't have that slow scenes in between that destroy the pace. 7.5/10
Happenstance Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 South Park: Bigger Longer and Uncut Been ages since ive watched this, forgot how great some of the songs are in it. Makes me wonder aswell if a new South Park movie would work now. I prefer South Park now to when this movie was released (apart from some of this seasons episodes of course) but its not nearly as popular anymore I dont think. 9/10
Dan_Dare Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Magnolia uh..wow. What a fucking excellent film this is. It has scope, power, style, humour, great performances. In two films, Paul T Anderson has leaped right to the top level in my favourite directors list. Great film.
Bluejay Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Magnolia uh..wow. What a fucking excellent film this is. It has scope, power, style, humour, great performances. In two films, Paul T Anderson has leaped right to the top level in my favourite directors list. Great film. It is excellent, isn't it? My dad walked out of the room when the frogs fell from the sky. He was like, "no, no, no...... this is too much." I loved it all. Hell, even Tom Cruise's character was great. William H Macy was brilliant too. Are his other films worth seeing? I loved There Will Be Blood but don't know of anything else he has done. I have seen quite a few films recently. I am in a film phase it seems. Paranoid Park Loved it, but not altogether sure why. It was essentially self indulgent nothingness made up of shots that just dwell on a character's blank face for several minutes. I guess it just all came together well and the film looked good, dreamlike almost. Or maybe I just like skateboarding culture. Whatever the reason, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Elephant Didn't rate this at all. Seemed like Paranoid Park but not quite there. Same sort of long shots of kids walking through corridors, only this time I wasn't so captivated. I wanted more but all I was given was they did it because they liked men and played the occasional videogame. Really? Really? Eastern Promises Peins/10
Slaggis Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 The Invasion I'll say it again, I have no idea why this flopped so badly. It's not wondeful, but it's no where near as bad as critics made it out to be. The kid was rather annoying, but Kidman was a really good choice for the movie. I can't remember the last time she was in a hit movie though, it seems like everything she's in flops in some shape or form. Anyway, craig wasn't bad either, but the ending was a little abrupt for me. 6.9/10
Mr. Bananagrabber Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 The Invasion I'll say it again, I have no idea why this flopped so badly. Because it's a fucking awful take on a classic film. :p I actually paid money to see it, I've never felt so violated.
Paj! Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Paranoid Park Loved it, but not altogether sure why. It was essentially self indulgent nothingness made up of shots that just dwell on a character's blank face for several minutes. I guess it just all came together well and the film looked good, dreamlike almost. Or maybe I just like skateboarding culture. Whatever the reason, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Loved that film. It was so dreamy and cool. Only unbelievable bit is... Doesn't even even react to being fucked by his girlfriend!
Klimop Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 La Jetée (Chris Marker, 1963) 13/10 Its a wonderful story with a great ending, very moving. But I'm not really into the still thing. I know that we don't remember the past, but images of the past but still. It's a little too experimenal for me (weird to say this), and I'm more into impulsive filming style with less editing than the calculated style this picture offers
welsh_gamer Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Watched a lot of films over the weekend :- Kill Bill Vol 1 + 2 Love them both equally and the soundtracks are top stuff! 9/10 Sin City Great as always. Every time I watch this, I notice something new. 8.5/10 Dirty Harry Very enjoyable thriller, with quality set-pieces and quotes. Must check out the sequels someday. 8.5/10 Shaun of the Dead My third or fourth viewing. Felt pretty stale this time round. Not as rewatchable as Hot Fuzz, and it could do with an extra 20 minutes or so before or at the Winchester. 6.5/10 Finding Nemo One of my favourite Pixar films. Never gets boring as every scenario is fantastic, it and was nice to watch it with my three year old cousin. 10/10 Mary Shelly's Frankenstein Ugh, acting and direction was poor, and I only got intrested in the story towards the end. Robert DeNiro's worst film, or does Rocky and Bullwinkle still hold that title? 4/10
Dynamo Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 I Am Legend Saw it for the second time a couple of days ago and really enjoyed it. I think the opinion on it is a little divided, but I think it's a good watch and Will Smith's great as always. 7.5/10
Deathjam Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Big trouble in little china town One of those films from your childhood that you remember as being great, but then when you see it again years later, you realise nostalgia has been clouding your judgement. Sad to say, but it is an awful awful film. Possibly so awful that its great? Hmm not today. For my childhood's sake I will be generous. 5/10 Sin City Love it and as someone said earlier, you notice new little things every time you watch it. Love the bit where marv is checking his inventory: "My mits" Bit with Sid Owen can 'occasionaly drag' but miko and bennicio del tores' characters are so entertaining. AH too much good stuff to talk about in this film so I stop here. 9/10 Underworld Decent film, but every time I watch it, the new stuff I am noticing is actually huge plot holes and concepts that just seem to have been totally glossed over. UV LIGHT in LIQUID form?! What the hell?! Vampire Countess that was in charge while Marcus slept was absolutely lame. How the hell did the covent survive when she took over i will never know. How the hell the vamps survived and seemed to dominate over the werewolves again I will never know as they seem to have intelligence, but the strength factor was well in favour for the wolves. 5.5/10
Cube Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Cloverfield It's still an awesome film, but not as absolutely fantastic as it was on a first watch. 8.5/10
Konfucius Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Assault on Precinct 13 Fairly standard storyline about good cop vs corrupt cops and a not so bad murderer. But the character relations and setting can differentiate it a bit from the rest. The action is very solid, some of the main characters flaws could have been a bit more fleshed out though, still quite an enjoyable action film with a too obvious ending. 6.5/10
Deathjam Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 I Robot Enjoyable Sci-Fi action romp. Standard stuff. Not much more to say really. 7/10 The Fly Stayed up to watch this film again. A harrowing tale of a gifted scientist, who believes in his invention to much, and it ends up ruining him. Would also like to note that it is the most disgusting film I have ever seen. More disgusting than all the SAW and Hostel films combined. This film gave me nightmares in the past but my god it is brilliant. P.S. I find that this film still impacts me in a way that I feel that I am gonna see a 6ft bug man around each dark corner of my house. Definitely sleeping with the lights on today. 9/10

Bluejay Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 Boogie Nights which is pretty excellent. Nice. Will get on it in the near future. True Romance tonight I think. My friend was raving about it, but I will go in with low expectations as that works best for me.
Oxigen_Waste Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 Paranoid ParkLoved it, but not altogether sure why. I'm just being and asshole. But I do dislike P Park fiercely. La Jetée (Chris Marker, 1963) 13/10 Its a wonderful story with a great ending, very moving. But I'm not really into the still thing. ALSO Alexander Nevsky Eisenstein . Seriously, this man stole my heart on countless occasions. And this is no exception. 8.5/10
