  1. General Book Thread

We get the occasional thread about books that never lasts long enough to get going, or rarely demands resurrecting. Please use this thread for your general book comments. I hope. Since I started work I've had a whole lot less time to do as I please, yet I've begun to read a hell of a lot more. I have a book for my train journeys called Shantaram, a 900-page epic that I'm not even half-way through yet and already it's been spell-binding and mind-opening. It's about an australian who has arrived in early 80's Bombay after escaping an Australian Jail, who falls in love with the city and its people. It is relentless, descriptive, engaging and optimistic. At night I tend to read The Corner before bed time (dan-likes-trees got the book too, or showed an interest, right?). It's from the writers behind The Wire, again set in Baltimore, centered around a couple of streets. it is more expansive than its sister show because there's a heavy political undertone; there are frequent essays into how the drug-fuelled culture is an impossible beast to tame, while at the same time there are believable lives played before the reader. To leave a few general questions for you - and don't feel you have to reply to any or all at once - Are you reading currently? Do you have a typical type of book? Do you buy books or borrow from the library? What was the last book you read? What is your favourite book? When do you read? And so on. Don't all rush at once.
  2. Wrinkly Balloons.

Rediscovered something yesterday; when a tired old balloon has started to shrink and it gets all wrinkly, I like to gently place my finger or hand on the wrinkles and let the rubber tighten up. Lol. My cousins - NEITHER COULD DO IT. Whadafuq? I'm not the only one who can do it eh?
  3. Pokémon Go! (Android/iOS)

I caught a ghastly on teh first day, and it was on my desk at work (this is pre- "oh I can turn off AR" on the timeline). Got home and there was a Haunter waiting on my desk, too! Night time I get more ghastlies, oddishes and venonats around my present location. Not actually actively played after 7pm so that's just a survey of what is nearby when I'm at home. Ima head out soon myself just to walk along the beach. Just hit lvl 17 and less bothered about levelling up, more bothered about catching and evolving new pokemon! i've caught 62 and seen 63, with a growlithe and an eggsecute from a pair of eggs hatched yesterday. So fun!
  4. Pokémon Go! (Android/iOS)

from what i hear there's little point in wasting your stardust on powering pokes up until you're a higher level. The higher level you are, the ligher base level CP pokes will have. As in; you can catch two weedles and you can max out teh candy/stardust and one will be more powerful than the other.... then you'll level up and catch one with a higher CP! My understanding is that you should following formulaic (please bear in mind the numbers are estimates only); Catch A ZILLION POKEMON, trade in A BILLION for candy, then pop a lucky egg and evolve A MILLION of 'em, then BAMMO you're a higher level sooner, and you can catch the more badass pokes. I've largely failed at this so far. Great way to catch A ZILLION POKEMON; sit near two pokestops, attach a lure to each (or be in a group to share the lure requirement), activate incense. You should see 3+ pokes appear every 5 mins, and nab enough pokeballs from teh stops to keep yourself going. I've basically done this twice so far. Personally, what I really want to do is go for a proper long walk along brighton seafront as there's a lot of water pokes there (obv), as opposed to the bug/flying/forest types round my way. Train stations and bus exchanges seem to be good for electric types, from what I've seen. There are a bunch of churchyards/graveyards near me, which is good for psychic/ghost types. Not figured a good place for rock/ground types yet.
  5. Pokémon Go! (Android/iOS)

Been playing since US release, and I've really loved seeing how this has impacted the real world. Everyone has heard about it. People are playing it who can't name 10 pokemon from the first generation. People (me) are going for a walk for no real reason but to play this. After work one day, I went to my local park and there's this spot with three pokestops close to each other, and 50+ people sitting around having a lure party. Went to town to do shopping. Sat and had a drink with some mates and caught 22 voltorbs. My friends are talking about buying a day saver ticket for the buses that go round Brighton as a tactic to rapidly hit up loads of pokestops for pokeballs, then go to spot x or spot y to have another lure party. I've managed to get into a gym once because I'm still only lvl 15, but I then trained a bunch and got my badge for that. Excited to see what they have in store in terms of rolling out other Gen pokemon - especially considering I couldn't name you 3 pokemon beyond gold/silver. As for this game changing the way Nintendo focuses on its consoles/games... well it's clearly a fresh new revenue stream, and I thnk it's incredibly smart for Nintendo to have gone this way considering how console gaming is less and less relevant.
  6. Has C-E + R-E = gone

But we have pokemon Go now. Where's the thread? I think someone's de-activated a whole bunch of my stuff so I can't even see the nintendo board. (hello again)
  7. Payday 2

Ok so I tried to find a thread but all i found was a thread with one reply in 2012 for the first game. First; anyone play? PM me! So! Payday 2 is an online multiplayer heisting game. FPS with skilltrees and perks and levelling up. There are TWO main forms of heists; stealth and loud. There are about... 35 missions to choose from which have various objectives. Stealthing is HARD but REWARDING. If you enjoy dishonored's stealthing (sans super powers) or love hitman then you will find creeping into a warehouse and stealing 20 bags of loot (servers, coke, money, weapons, paintings...) without being spotted to be an absolute blast. If you enjoy Left 4 Dead, with its waves of regular and special enemy then you'll enjoy combatting the cops and swat in Payday 2. Just like L4D's 'director' the levels are very dynamic. items spawn in different places - objectives are in different places. Guard spawns and routes are different and unpredictable. Loot can be in different places, and the enemy waves are randomised - as are the special enemy spawns. No heist played twice is the same. The best part is that the game (on PC especially) is frequently updated with new DLC content - both paid and free. You can play any heist - even ones you haven't paid for - by joining that heist's lobby from the heist select screen. I'm really just looking for people to play with -- if you have a copy on PC then please PM me your steam name - I play pretty much every day. If you don't have a copy but would be interested then let me know - I may have a gift for you :P Oh, and the music is awesome. Quick STEALTH video of the quickest stealth heist. You will be chuffed when you do this successfully either as a team or - real challenge - by yourself; And next is a video of when a stealth goes loud - alarm goes and the cops will arrive shortly; (see 2:55 for the beat break - yum!) (inb4 "i hate this music" comments. You can customise if you must) My biggest complaint with the game is that there is no decent introductory tutorial at all. There are game mechanics that you have to just figure out (unless you play with me - I would be happy to advise!). Luckily the community is really good - anyone who plays the game a lot will much prefer new players to ASK QUESTIONS rather than just stay silent and fuck shit up. By biggest compliment is that I only started playing just before halloween and I have seen five new heists added, three new characters, a new skill tree -- all of which you can play for free (to an extent), as well as numerous other DLCs and updates/alterations which are free and cost money. There's also two heists to come shortly which everyone in the community is psyched about. This video shows the GO Bank heist - a nod to a CS:GO map. Shows you some of the madness that happens when things go loud; And lastly here is a rundown of some of the game mechanics - may be video overload but I don't expect anyone to have watched the above. There have been some mechanical updates on PC but worth checking out as it's a great introductory video (which I found after I wrote this post so hat-tip at the references in the vid I mentioned); So once again - if you have the game then come play with me! If you don't but are interested then give me a shout as well! [edit] And just to say this is one of the top 10 most played games on Steam every week. Vibrant community even 2 years after it first came out, and with two more years of promised content. Check it out.
  8. Making a Murderer (Netflix)

EDIT: Oh yeah the fuss isn't about the first episode. Watch more.
  9. Making a Murderer (Netflix)

Managed to finish it a few days ago...
  10. Steamy Lovers Join A...

Thanks for the messages - apologies for being a shit forumer for the last year (and beyond) - but I still check this place (nearly) daily and I genuinely appreciate the attention (why lie?). however Moogle overstepped the mark with the mundane shit about symmetry. That was just zzz. Even for me. :P
  11. What's your internet speed like?

i know the bits/bites thing but I don't automatically know which one is being used when people say "megs" or "gigs" when talking about stuff. you say talking about "small amounts of data" but the industry clearly has taken advantage of the difference and exploited the idiocy of people like me. Luckily all their competitors (have to) do the same, so that means that I can compare what I have against others a bit more easily.
  12. What's your internet speed like?

Cheers - I'm never quite sure when it's upper or lower case with these things! That site said I get 60MB/s while I was streaming something. Then I stopped teh stream and it said I get 20MB/s. I'm guessing that's to be expected in a house with 4 people.
  13. What's your internet speed like?

I couldn't tell you what advertised speed our internet is here, but basically; Steam says my best dl speed is 5.3mb/s I typically game on PC with low quality games like AoE2 and get ping of 33/60 with my friends, so it's very playable. I have trouble convincing my friends to chat via teamspeak, so if I need to download a new game or update AND chat via skype... it's just not happening... I live in a house with between 4 and 6 people I also frequently play COD on the PS3 and lag is definitely to blame for at least 30% of my deaths (STFU it's not anecdotal) I don't know what you're used to, or what you intend to do. But I stream iPlayer, netflix and prime via my pc and I don't ever have any buffering issues. My wireless dongle thing likes to just stop working about three times a day. .. I have no idea what my net speed is supposed to be for this household so I don't know how beneficial any of this was to you! But play me at AoE2 anytime on your fancy fibre connection and I'll still beat you with lag.
  14. Job woes/wins

So almost overnight I have an idea for a consultancy gig... if I am able to pull it together I think I could be in with a shout. I've had a chat with some friends who know what they're talking about and they agree the timing could be potentially massive... so I'm in a position where I could invest a lot of time over the next 3 months and potentially be in for a great little business. I'm so excited and terrified... I don't yet have the self-belief that I could pull this off - but at the same time I have some nuggets of confidence to know that I genuinely could do this, I just have to not let myself down. I need to keep the motivation up. It's so difficult not knowing anyone else with the same level of knowledge that I have who also has market experience - they would be able to tell me how foolhardy I am... Aaaaiii!
  15. Fallout 4

I spent about 20 hours before I went to Diamond City, because when I played FO3 I took a left out of the vault and just explored for about 40 hours before I even went to megaton. I had no idea how big the game was or how long the story would be. Once I got to Diamond City the game really picked up. There's some really solid quests that introduce you to different strains of the game's focus -- essentially living off the Minutemen stories is pretty damn dry. I guess it's more interesting for Americans who are a bit more clued-up with the actual historical relevance. Having been to boston fairly recently I was really all about finding the Freedom Trail - which i came across during the story but couldn't follow it - then the story kept being cool, then super cool, and now I've found some interesting places and I have 17 missions on the go, plus I found at least 15 places that I couldn't visit because I was following a mission... I guess what I'm trying to say is that with FO3 I had no idea how BIG the game was, and to go into FO4 knowing that it would be a game of similar scope I had lost a lot of the curiousity and joy that FO3's surprises gave me, and I made the mistake of assuming I knew what to expect this time round. The game gets better the more you do, I think.
  16. Potential for future co-anniversaries though!
  17. Whatever happened to BISH?

I still visit daily! I just don't post that much because I don't have anything interesting to say. A few friends of mine were talking about making an app for BISH a while back. Would make it a lot easier. I'd be happy to organise if there was enough interest.
  18. Doing the tinder thing for the last 2 days. Yes, i broke up with my gf - sorta probably permanently and my housemate convinced me it was a good idea. It's been hilarious. First two matches were bots. 3rd one must've unmatched me. 4th seemed ok but during chat she revealed she has a kid... so I dropped the "lol i'm blind" card but she's persisted -- so i've made the chat as boring as possible. I've come accross four people I know (swiped ONE right...) and given my phone to other people to swipe for me. I have no desire to actually meet any of these people but I guess there's the chance that one of them is engaging enough that I'd change my mind. Sooo many girls into rugby or the gym or horses..! Every profile tries to check the boxes; outdoorsy activity picture; social fun picture; picture of holiday... And the profiles where they pull the same duckface pose close-up with different hair that is trying to avoid the topic of "this is my body" but ends up leaving me think "she's probably really fat" -- and normally I wouldn't judge a person that way, fact is I don't want a girlfriend that I'm not attracted to. Sorry world. But I'm sure plenty of left-swipers saw me and judged me, so it's all good.
  19. Fallout 4

  20. Fallout 4

Decided to get the game last night and played it today. I'm getting the same sensation as I got with FO3 -- that is, i kind of don't really know what I'm doing or where I'm going yet (well, i mean I know I can just follow the quests but I want to go explore!). I happen to have today and tomorrow off work, so I can invest a chunk ahead of my mates.
  21. Football Season 2015/16

Doesn't matter if you made arsenal look shit, or if they actually played shit. Point is that you couldn't beat them.
