Scanning through the trailer for no particular reason, and I noticed some new and returning items.

  • The Mega Mushroom returns. Get huge, go faster, squish people you drive over.
  • There's a ? Block. Seems like you can hit it multiple times and get a coin for each time, but whenever you do, it drops 2 coins behind you for the players trailing to pick up.
  • Hammers! Yeah, like the ones Hammer Bros (Who are playable now) throw. Kinda similar to the Fire Flower, except they fire in a spread shot, and an arc.
  • Seems to be an item that summons Kamek to go and do... something. No idea what.

Some random Mario enemies seem to have become racers, like the beetle things and the crabs from the Mario Bros. games. I'm hoping they're just placeholders for to-be-revealed characters

Why bother to make bespoke animations for characters that you're just gonna replace? That's just a waste.

You'll play as Dolphin, and like it!

Have you seen those videos where someone takes the skeleton from each Mario Party character and puts it in the body of the others and plays the animations? It's easy! Horrifying, but easy.

Stylised world map with all the tracks and roads shown, taken from the official site:

Sweet Baby Mario that's all kinds of mind-boggling!

Yeah, that confirms what I think is happening.

They're using all those connecting roads to get 15 cups worth of tracks. So some locales will be repeats. For example, "Crown City" actually shows up at least two separate times in Grand Prix, but they'll likely be different layouts.

Effectively, it's a return to how Super Mario Kart did it, "Mario Circuit 1" and "Mario Circuit 2" being different tracks, but having the same backdrops.

Seems like a decent compromise to deal with the problem of having to develop expensive 4K art assets.

I don't mind as long as the track design is unique.

I do hope that there are a lot of challenges and events for the free roam. Something similar to Burnout Paradise would be amazing for Mario Kart. There were a few different parts to it

1. Challenges. One is picked and everyone is tasked with doing certain thing (driving in the wrong side of the road, jump a certain distance, drift) and the amount you need to reach can either be individual or cumulative. Some were in certain locations, so you had to rush over there.

2. Game modes. It had games like stunt run and marked man which you could just start. You could organise a location yourself (there were some neat off road areas). So in MK you could just do battle node anyways.

3. Bragging. Certain feats were shown in a leaderboard, as well as a time trial for each road. These were just for the current session.

4. A lobby for races. You could drive around while matches were being set up.

You could also look for a he collectables and other secrets while driving around. I feel like this style of online gameplay (competitive cooperation) would suit Nintendo.

They confirmed at the Treehouse that Free Roam doubles up as a waiting lobby for group sessions.

When the host decides to start a proper race, it goes into the voting system without leaving Free Roam.

@BowserBasher and I will have something to do, when I open a room 15 minutes before 8 now.

Honestly, without that, I would've been absolutely "whatever" about that mode, but this means that at least it's not a complete waste of time.

Having a host means that the rest of the ideas would work fluently, as Paradise had a host selecting modes. Those extra things make it incredibly fun to just goof around in with friends. It's why I ended up playing Paradise for 1000 hours

(Incidentally, the direct also reminded me of Paradise due to its mugshots feature were it sent a picture of you when you get taken out by another player)

FInally had a chance to catch up on the Treehouse Live video for this game, and... yeah.  It looks totally tits!

They actually managed to make a new Mario Kart that feels completely distinct from MK8, it looks so fresh and fun to play!  It's also technically an open world game, but it doesn't look like a dumpster fire to play! Amazing! They did the impossible! :D

The track design looks really solid, I was worried that the tracks would end up feeling overly wide when I saw the initial teaser footage, but the actual gameplay doesn't bear that fear out.  Plenty of enclosed roads and mayhem, love it! I also love the new item dragging mechanic, lots of potential for getting screwed over; the kind of stuff that future Mario Kart League Highlight Videos are made of ;)

Ohboy!
Seeing this brought back some memories of my Mario Kart Wii days on here.

This looks absolutely amazing to play with y'all, so I hope I can transfer my friendlist and join in on a game or two!

Hey, long time no see. :)
Still have some vids up from the MK Wii days (the quality is shocking now though for some reason :hehe:) including these classics:

Still unsure if I'll be getting a Switch 2 at launch, but will hopefully have one by the end of the year.
Does anyone recall how long it took for the original Switch to be readily available after launch without a pre-order?

Anyway, when I do get my mitts on one I'll be all over this game, so yeah, hope to race with you again some time!

It was readily available pretty much from the start. I didn't get one until a few weeks after launch and just walked into a shop and bought one. I didn't preorder and contemplated getting one on launch day and Argos had plenty of stock in my area. Scalpers are a lot worse now though.
