Wow... Maybe I am growing up?

Okay, I apologize in advance if this thread is a repeat of an existing one, I did search for keywords, and didn't find anything, but I do feel we've had similar threads before...

Anyway ramble over... point of the thread go...

Okay, So within the last 2 weeks, I've actually started to notice things now that annoy me that wouldn't back when I was 18-21 era.

Let's start with -

Now from 18 to probably 22 (AKA my single years ) I'd frequent town every weekend. I lived at home, paid rent and all, but had no commitments other than filling my car with petrol and going to work. My money went on weekends in town getting drunk, and even on Tuesdays, Wednesday & Thursdays I'd visit my local pub with friends because Tuesday was Karaoke night, Wednesday was students night and Thursday was.. well the day before Friday.

I'd have no problem with the wait at the bar, I'd have no problem with the crowds, No problem with how loud and busy the places would be.

Fast Forward to weekend just gone. Went to my local pub for the first time in a while with my Brother. I couldn't stand it. Waiting to get a drink, people cutting in, people being obnoxiously loud and the crowdedness of the place.. I hated it, I suggested drinking outside because I was annoyed with being indoors.

I would much rather now just have people over for drinks at my house, or go to someone else's house for drinks rather than go out.

Leads into the next part...

Seriously as mentioned Week nights would be out drinking, getting up at 6am the following morning and going to work. Sure i'd feel a little tired, but It was very easily manageable.

Again using this weekend just gone, I got home from drinks with my brother at around 1:30am. I had to be up at 9am to take Heather to tattoo place. I was fucking hanging, Felt like shit, and really felt sleep deprived. As lame as it sounds, week days now I'm in bed and hopefully asleep by 10:30pm, still up for 6am but struggle, I love weekends bed usually by 11pm and waking up at 10am the next morning. Love it.

Now I've always kept to the rules when going to the cinema when I was young. I've paid money to watch a film and appreciate other people do too, But when I was younger, if some other people were making noise, I'd keep to myself and just try to ignore them...

Last night I watched kick ass 2, I had a group of 4 girls sit next to me, they were chatting and giggling through the trailers, I can tolerate that, that's not too bad. They said some fucking dumb things, but again, a case of just ignoring it, only a few more minutes till they shut up.

Film starts, and they don't shut up, they make comments about the film, the make fun of scenes in the film, they make comments about lines said in the film, they guess what is going to happen next and say it loudly.

I did something i'd never done before, stood up, looked at them and loudly said "Children, would you mind shutting the fuck up!"

The couple sat in the seats in front of us gave me a little applause to approve of what I'd done.

The girls moved seats.

Yup, again when younger at a gig, I'd be one of the annoying people that would try to get to the front, It would seem I didn't actually care about seeing the band, as many short people may agree with, closer you get, the more likely your view will be blocked in the crowd. But still I'd go into the crowds, get involved in moshes, not really care about things.

Now... I like to stand at a high spot at the back, I like to see the band even if i'm at the back of the crowd, I like to avoid the crowds again (pattern emerging here), I don't like being involved in mosh pits particularly anymore, especially if at a gig soba. And i find myself wanting the night to go quickly. especially between bands setting up, It's like I'll calculate "The opening act is on for 30 mins, say 15 mins to set up 2nd band, then a 30 minute wait between 2nd band and headliner, means the night will be over by about 1am"

Fuck all.

Yup I turn 27 at the end of this month. I'm all about getting presents, Don't get me wrong I've asked for stuff, and i'm looking forward to my birthday. Looking forward to seeing family, But Heather asked me what I want to do on my birthday...

Heather - "So do you want to go out for some drinks?

Me - "Nah not really"

Heather - "okay, how about food, get people out for a meal.. TGI, Chiquitos?"

Me - "I don't mind just having normal dinner at home after work!"

Heather - "What... you didn't take your birthday off work??"

Me - "Why would I?"

Heather - "Because You used to take the day before and your actual birthday off work..."

Heather - "How about people come over and we'll have a few drinks at home"

Me - "Yeah that's okay then."

Heather - "You sound oh so happy about it...!"

I used to actually love going out for drinks on my birthday, organizing an event weeks in advance to make sure people could make it, Would suggest themes for dress up, or random nights out to places we've not been. But now... falls back into the first category of drinking in town I guess, I can't be bothered with town now. It's money, effort, annoying. I'd rather drink at home.

Fair amount to read, Didn't intend to list so many examples of aging, but the more I typed, the more examples came to my mind, Sorry about that.

Anyway to the point...

Have you noticed things like that? Have your ideas of a good time changed at all? Do you look back at things and think "I enjoyed doing that?"

I actually think I've regressed in some ways, @Murr. With gigs, I used to enjoy standing somewhere near the back with space so I could just see the band. Now, I much prefer going closer to the front (not RIGHT at the front, but in the thick of it) as you get the atmosphere. I remember going to a Muse gig and thought, "you know what? This is a bit shit." No atmosphere at the back of the room. All of the fans are at the front. I think I crave that.

As for drinking, it sounds like you burnt yourself out doing it or you got the most out of it. Going to town 3+ times a week is a lot and it's expensive, brah. I wouldn't say it's growing up, but that you had your time doing it and you've enjoyed it.

It's down to how you really evolve as a person. You can either be seen as "grumpy" or chill as fuck. Like that cinema stuff, I probably would have let that pass, because I'd think that they would shut up in a minute or so. But, the older me would perhaps have gotten annoyed with them.

Well, I'm 23, turning 24 in November.

Your experience in the cinema...I can relate to that. I hate going to cinemas because of other people there talking, giggling and being annoying (and because movies are all in German, which sucks :p ).

And birthdays...don't get me started. I haven't celebrated one since I was 12, I think.

Even at my 18th birthday (big deal for a lot of people), I didn't do shit and everyone was like "oh, come on, let's party."

Noooope, nope, nope, nope.

I'd rather stay at home, drink beers with my best mate and play video games.

All that other stuff...going out, getting drunk, waking up the next morning. Don't have a problem with that :p Yet.

Yep. I mainly find myself going out at weekends occasionally but that's normally for special occasions. This Saturday I'll be out for a mates birthday and she's hired out a kareoke booth at Walkabout (those lil rooms are awesome) but I don't really "seek out" going out. My girlfriend and I go to a local pub we play darts for on a Sunday night for the pub quiz but normally we just buy two 15 can boxes of beer and chill at home with a film which will inevitably lead to a visit to fillmybelly and some food ordered.

I do see/hear some of the youngsters going out and having a good time and I sometimes feel jealous, but I know that were I to go out and join them. I wouldn't enjoy it as I once did.

@Fierce_LiNk - I guess It could come across as I'm a grumpy person or getting grumpier as I get older, I mean I do tend to try and ignore stuff like the cinema for example, but last night I don't know why I just had to say something.

I think I just get wound up easier now, like the waiting at a bar example, I could stand and wait around for a drink not giving a fuck, as long as I got served eventually, Now it just infuriates me when people get served before me, when they literally just get to the bar and I'd been waiting for ages.

Nothing to really be grumpy about though, I've got a study paying job as does Heather, we've got the house malarkey sorted now, will be married in just over a half a year. Dunno.

I still enjoy drinking with friends, and if push comes to shove and we do go to town or a bar, I'll drink, and enjoy it. But just things that wouldn't bother me previously.. do now?

@drahkon you maybe a lucky one, that just doesn't suffer from hangovers :p

It's more about your fuse. I used to have a very short fuse and things like the bar stuff would wind me up. I guess I've just learned to relax about it all. I generally dislike bars on a weekend, as they're crowded to hell. I usually choose where I go out by the music played there. Like a nice indie or a rock-type pub. You usually find the atmosphere is better, so you don't mind as much waiting in a line. It's where you're in walkabout or something on a Saturday and there's only 3 people on the tills, that would piss me off.

I hardly drink these days. My ideal night would be having friends around at our place, drinking cider, playing some board games and video games whilst eating pizza or something. :D

"Children, would you mind shutting the fuck up!"

Haha, good job man.

Personally, I've been a grumpy hermit bastard for years. Don't remember the last time I celebrated a birthday with someone, never liked bars (stupidly loud places with annoying drunk wank faces), have only gone to a few concerts (not that interested), and so on. Movie theaters...well they're ok, but I've never been a fanatic movie-goer.

Overly crowded / loud places, I just don't like them. I'd much rather go somewhere where I can actually converse with my company without having to fucking shout all the time. Theaters, museums, visiting nature, all kinds of fairs are fun too, doing sports together, driving around the city / country etc. Or just hanging around, playing video / board games and so on.

I can relate to all of that.

I turned 23 in June and became like that instantly after university. But to be fair, whilst I'd get blasted at uni and wander off in a club, I preferred house gatherings or the pub.

I'm not into large crowds, walking through a busy shopping centre on a Saturday makes me nervous, never mind a club. It helps to have alcohol to hand.

Nowadays I live too far from work to be able to drink and go the pub because of driving, I don't miss it and I save a lot of money not drinking.

Gigs are the same issue, I love going to gigs, for the band, but if I could see them without anyone there..

Cinema same thing.

Joys!

I can certainly relate to many of the above. Especially the cinema, bloody hate the young kids chatting throughout the movie. I've even had to lean over, like yourself and tell them to shut up as some of us want to see the movie without additional voice-overs. And again, like yourself i've had a round of applause. I also don't go to the cinema as often as i used to, mainly due to the annoying kids.

With the gigs, i'm still liking the mosh pits. Because of my size, i can see the bands no matter where i stand. I just dislike the waiting for the band to start. And some of the warm-ups, i do wish they'd not play at all as they are crap.

The other thing i've grown out of, and hate seeing these days are the people who go out to get pissed/drunk/sloshed. In my younger days, when i had my first proper full-time job, i was out 5 nights a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday* (*this was only due to the pool season)) and used to drink double figures in drinks, which ranged from 10 to at my worst, 35 pints in a night. At £2 a pint, that was some money i spent. Now, i go out twice a week (still do the Wednesday and Saturday) and only drink 3 or 4 on a Wedesday, and maybe double figures (10) on a Saturday.

I see many young people going out and getting hammered as it were, it reminds me of what i used to do. But i don't like seeing it, which puts me off drinking that much ever again. Plus it's expensive to drink anyway, and thats another factor as to why i stopped.

I'm still ok with crowds at the moment, that may change.

I've just turned 24 but I've felt it for at least the last two years. I've done nothing to celebrate. The only thing my friends seem to want to do to celebrate is go to town and drink, and that's nothing particularly special when you used to do it multiple times per week. Clubs and crowded pubs are just a big no-no for me now. I've got two bottles of stout I'm going to drink tonight, having more than one must be a wild night these days!

It's not necessarily a bad thing though. A lot of those things you mentioned are annoying things but you'd let them pass because you didn't want to cause a scene. Now, with things like the cinema, you've payed your money and you want watch the fucking film in peace. One thing i've learned as you get older is your bullshit level drops and you're more inclined to tell people what you think.

As for the drink thing, you've exhausted it. The people who are still doing it later in life are the sad people. Nothing wrong with going out at a weekend but when the hair's receding and your week is still one long hangover; you've got issues.

Same here. I kind of hate pubs.

Busy or loud pubs, yes. Classic pubs that don't get too crowded and don't entertain the 'night scene' are fine and a better way to spend a night out with friends imo.

This is me:

I think a lot of it can be ascribed to another consequence of ageing; I've done it a billion times already. I mean when you get to drinking age you don't give a shit about how long it takes because, fuck, man, we're out DRINKING OMGNOADGNOADNG!

When you're a teen (or tween or whatever) I guess a lot of what is 'cool' is because you feel like you're still a kid but you're allowed to do adult stuff. This makes the 'stuff' seem far more fun than it actually is. Then when you're older and you want to just do stuff you're pissed off by the novices getting over-excited about it all.

Just picture that loud, non-stop talking 5 year old on the train who doesn't realise having a gameboy on full-volume is socially annoying. That kid grows out of it, and eventually realises trains aren't fun. They're just trains.

Same thing applies to teens in pubs and cinemas. Though I do like that this thread is "growing up" not "growing old" because the emphasis is much more positive this way :P

I love the fact that so many people who don't play games, consider themselves 'grown up' because they go out regularly etc, spending all their money on getting blind drunk every weekend because everyone else in their peer group does it; but as soon as you mention that you play games...

'Oh right... I don't have time for those any more'

Which is basically like saying...

'You still play those? Why don't you grow up?'

:blank:

I'm already more 'grown up' than most of them will ever know, I choose to play games because they require a certain amount of skill to beat, they are a challenge, some of them would seem near impossible for someone who is not grown up to beat, as they'd probably get frustrated with the game and give up. :heh:

While it's true that I have been gaming all the time that I've been growing up, now that I am it feels like the most natural thing in the world to me and I just laugh in the face of anyone who doesn't think of me as a grown up because I still play games as it's surely them who need to mature a little.

Annoys me when people think its a grown up thing to look down on people who like to go out on the piss.

Each to their own, I don't look down on people who like to go out on the piss, there's nothing wrong with it... in moderation. ;)

Just like there's nothing wrong with gaming, in moderation... I just find it funny that 'going out and getting completely drunk' is considered a more 'grown up' thing to do than to spend a night in playing games, that's all. :)

There's no judgement here, I just can't help but find it ironic within the context of what's considered to be 'grown up' these days. : peace:

I enjoy getting pissed, I just don't enjoy busy clubs or pubs to do it. I've been at the pub today since 3 pm with my dad due to a flex day and enjoyed chatting and drinking with him. I'm currently 5 pints worse off than I was 4 hours ago and literally walking out the door to head to my friends house to celebrate his 28th birthday. But because it is at his house where you serve yourself and are with people your familiar and comfortable with... I'm highly looking forward to it. And quite enjoyed being at a practically empty pub for 4 hours with my dad because I could get served within seconds :p

I'm actually like this now and I've pretty much always have been, ESPECIALLY with the cinema one. I've never been one to keep my mouth shut, lmao.

There was a time when I went to see Twilight and every single time Robert Pattinson (Edward) was on screen, the girls would scream over everything he's saying. I lost it and shouted "SHUT UP! YOU'RE SCREAMING AT A SCREEN, HE CAN'T HEAR YOU!". They soon shut up and I got a little applause. I just can't STAND ignorant people like that. Annoys the shit out of me.

Why are you there though? Like why are you in the cinemas watching a movie if all you're going to do is talk and chat? Same goes for the gym. I had these motherfuckers the other day squabbling about jack shit sitting on the machines I wanted to use and they weren't using them for 10 minutes. In the end, I went over and asked if they were using them. They said they were going to so I did some rowing instead. After I did that, they were STILL on there. So I thought to myself 'fuck this', went over to the guy who owns the gym and told him. He went over and said "This isn't a cafe or a bus stop, stop talking like old women and work out or get out!". They left!
