Jimbob Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 I'm prepped and ready. Interested in seeing how the new series will work, and if it has the same factor that made the original such a good show.
mcj metroid Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 I'm actually only taking a guess at the time to be honest, but I'd imagine it would be shown quite soon after the first showing.
flameboy Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 Is this not a tonight thing? I swear someone told me thursday. I wasn't going to bother, but having realised I'm not much to owt else, I think I shall! I'd agree with Hamish about it being quite unique in some ways; I think it's even more noticeable in it being british too. That's my bad when I posted it probably was Thursday! I'm gonna try use vpn and tvcatchup to watch it.
mcj metroid Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 Well it's repeated at 11:40pm hm not bad 10 minutes off. ya I'm looking forward to this having grown up with the series essentially. Not many people i know watch it though.
Rummy Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 Was half watching, I'd say that was all right. Seemed like good enough standard Red Dwarf fare for me!
Cube Posted October 4, 2012 Author Posted October 4, 2012 That felt exactly like how Red Dwarf should feel. Absolutely spot-on.
Jimbob Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 It was very good. Much better than Back to Earth, love the sets. Jokes are just as funny as the original series.
Rummy Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 Really reminds me of the earlier serieseseses, maybe because it was mainly just those guys, on a ship, without too many added extras/bar the passing through characters? Looking forward to seeing if the standard holds.
Mike Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 Wow, you guys really liked it? I thought it was dreadful! Chuckled about three times, but that was it. I honestly didn't find it any funnier than Back To Earth. Such a shame, as I was a huge Red Dwarf fan back in the early days.
Retro_Link Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 I enjoyed it. Was funny and it looked the part... although Kryten might take a bit of getting used to!? Certainly enjoyed it more than Series 8 anyway (although I can't really remember Series 8 much due to not enjoying it much!)
Jimbob Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 Honestly, i found this better than Back to Earth. More laughs, better script, better............better.
Sheikah Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 Great, really enjoyed it. Especially that point where Rimmer said they found Kryten and just hosed him down and gave him a hat. :p
Jimbob Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 And they still can't get the number of times he failed his astro-navigation exam correct. I swear it went upto 14 times in earlier series, and now back to 9.
The Peeps Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 I thought it was pretty good. If they can continue the series in the same vain, it might actually return properly.
Dcubed Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 (edited) That was a lot better than I expected it to be! A very nice solid start! (the Moose joke in particular was really quite great! ) Not much of a plot to it, and some parts dragged on a bit, but I enjoyed it still. Definitely washes out the bad taste of BTE quite nicely. Did anyone else get the feeling that it felt more like a stage show version of Red Dwarf though, rather than a TV show? Got a strange feeling that I couldn't quite shake off about it (not that that's a bad thing, just a bit of an odd feeling) Edited October 5, 2012 by Dcubed

Is it the original hologram that spent all that tim with Lister or is it a hologram version of the Rimmer from Season 8? Also wouldn't be first time Red Dwarf has fudged the numbers. That was a lot better than I expected it to be! A very nice solid start! Did anyone else get the feeling that it felt more like a stage show version of Red Dwarf though, rather than a TV show? Got a strange feeling that I couldn't quite shake off about it (not that that's a bad thing, just a bit of an odd feeling) At first I didn't like the Moose joke I felt it was trying a little too hard to evoke that classic Red Dwarf dialogue moment. I was a bit surprised that was their opening gambit. However it came into it's own later in the show. I do get what you mean about the stage show feel, think this almost intentional. I know it was filmed with all the sets side by side. The show i benefited from this more refined focus and enabled better writing in my view. Something I couldn't shake was despite knowing it was filmed in front of a live audience that the laugher track was canned. One of the great things about the earlier seasons was how well the cast played off the audience, delivering lines with perfect timing and pausing etc...in response to the laughter. Didn't feel like this. Nice to see Chris Barrie has lost weight since BTE (which as a Blade Runner and fan of meta stuff didn't mind so much) as he feels more like the Rimmer we know.. Also Kryten seems to be alluding closer to the original with a light skin tone, interesting to see the effect an aging face has clearly had on the look of the character. I did hear a rumour relating to the end of Season 8: it is addressed in the last episode "The Beginning"
Hero-of-Time Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 I thought it was great! The whole moose joke than ran throughout had me in stitches, as did Lister's fit over wanting to answer the phone while being held up. Well happy with it.
EEVILMURRAY Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 Also Kryten seems to be alluding closer to the original with a light skin tone, interesting to see the effect an aging face has clearly had on the look of the character. Simply didn't like Kryten's look on this. The lighter skin tone I could understand, but the bags under his eyes and it seemed the angles had been dumbed down on his head. It looked sloppy. Made me think of what they did in Hollow Man. But apart from that, wasn't a bad episode. Honestly, i found this better than Back to Earth. More laughs, better script, better............better. Let's be honest, it wouldn't take much to be better than Back to Earth.
MoogleViper Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 Certainly not the best Red Dwarf episode. It wasn't as funny as old episodes. But there wasn't anything wrong with it. So nothing to be disappointed about, and can look forward to the rest of the serious. And possibly future series?
Agent Gibbs Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 I really enjoyed the episode, certainly better than series 7-9 (back to earth is classed as 9 right?) I did wonder wear that moose joke was going at first, i thought it was a weak opening joke obviously not realising it was a set up Kryten was odd.... i can see they have altered him to be closer to season 3 Kryten and i guess address some of they questions of why he looked so different when he became a regular, i can only guess if they address it further it will be an alternate/spare head. but all in all very good!
MoogleViper Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 I can only guess if they address it further it will be an alternate/spare head. That could actually be quite a good self reference joke.
Jimbob Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 Well we technically don't know which version of Rimmer this is or anything...so that could have an effect. Is it the original hologram that spent all that tim with Lister or is it a hologram version of the Rimmer from Season 8? Also wouldn't be first time Red Dwarf has fudged the numbers. True, there have been rumours flying around about which version of Rimmer that is. Some indicate thats the Rimmer who was originally around from season 1 to 7 (the one that turned into Ace Rimmer). I'm inclined to believe them. @EEVILMURRAY, thats true. Not hard to beat "Back to Earth" at all. I suppose the live-recorded audience and built sets along with a better script compared to CGI "Back to Earth" isn't hard to beat.
bob Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 I thought it was great! Loved the moose joke, and Cat getting lost. Thought it was back to it's best, and felt just like how Red Dwarf should do. I'm not sure what was up with Kryten's eyes though, seems like it should have been something they could fix quite easily but chose not to...
