Ashley Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 John Mahoney's death is probably the celebrity death that has bummed me out the most. I'm a huge Frasier fan (currently watching it through again) and he's always seemed like a nice down to earth person. I had always hoped I'd see him on stage (although I don't think he does much in the UK anymore). Not long ago I joked he could play Corbyn in a play as they look similar. 2
bob Posted February 9, 2018 Posted February 9, 2018 See above. Was eating, and my tongue just seemed so tasty, I just had to have a bite. I instantly regretted my decision.
Raining_again Posted February 9, 2018 Posted February 9, 2018 I have had a huuuuuuge arthritic flare up. Barely just barely managing stairs. So glad I had the wit to buy a bungalow instead of a house! and this happened. My house smells like burnt plastic. Luckily it was the bathroom or else it could have been interesting

Shorty Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 Driving down the motorway on Saturday I noticed smoke pouring out of my car. Pulled up and called the AA, waited an hour and caught a cold, head gasket gone. I was exactly half-way to my destination, my AA package only covered me for a local tow, not much point doing that since the car was basically DoA. I'd have to pay a fortune to get it fixed in the middle of nowhere, get home somehow, get back for it later.... So ended up paying £103 to upgrade my AA and get towed home instead. So now I've got a dead car on my drive that will cost hundreds to fix. Damn car isn't even worth hundreds, but I can't afford a new one either Time to sell the dream bike maybe. 1

A similar thing happened to me when I was driving my Ford Escort on the way to see a friend. Hate how expensive cars can be when they have issues. Could you maybe get a bank loan to get a car, maybe?
Shorty Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 My usual means is to get a 0% purchases credit card to pay off monthly, much safer than a loan, I'm not big on loans (even if they're essentially the same thing, I'm very anti-APR) Problem is I'm still paying off my motorbike. Now the weather's clearing up I can actually use the bike to commute but it's not so easy for ferrying friends around or picking up the shopping! I'm pretty lucky with buses where I live and work, bus stop right near my house and a straight line to the office. So for now, I'm just gonna get the bus and leave the car as a problem for future-me to deal with. 1
Eenuh Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 Can't you get shopping delivered? Or does that cost too much? We never leave the house for food shopping anymore, just get it delivered to our door. So convenient! Hated being stuck in the supermarket on a Saturday/Sunday.

If you're happy to shop at the same supermarket you can get an annual pass so online delivery isn't that expensive. Probably cheaper than fuel costs. Especially if you factor in your time. Unless you like to shop at the discounters like Lidl/Aldi.
Nolan Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 @Shorty How kaput is your head gasket? https://www.amazon.com/Bars-HG-1-Blown-Gasket-Repair/dp/B003RGIWO0 Could be a cheap temporary fix. Key word is temporary. Follow the instructions (obviously) but it’s pretty simple, dump it in your radiator and it cycles through finds the leak(s) and flows through them and seals. If the gasket is far too gone though you’ll likely not have much luck. And regardless if it does work it’s not permanent. An actual metal/cork gasket isn’t permanent so...yeah. Worth a try maybe, just to keep the car mobile for emergency but still not in use. 1
Ashley Posted February 15, 2018 Posted February 15, 2018 Got braces earlier and I know in the long term it's going to be good but at this moment it's mildly painful and all I can think about is all the foods I shouldn't eat.

It got worse, but not terrible, last night and then this morning was worse. So far the pain isn't too bad, its just irritating. I expect its going to get worse over the next few days.

I've been thinking about getting braces but not sure how much I'd be willing to spend.

In total £3600. I went for something slightly more expensive and quicker (should be ~6 months) and that's for top and bottom including permanent retainers on the inside (ie behind teeth) after. At a breakdown it is: 150 * 2 - retainers 1650 * 2 - braces So it would depend on what you need exactly. Ended up getting it on 0% interest finance for 12 months just for security's sake, but might pay it off early down the line. 1

Best to talk to your dentist about it at your next check up as they'd be able to give a more accurate figure obviously. I'm now just going to wish away the next few months...
drahkon Posted February 16, 2018 Posted February 16, 2018 Coming down with the flu again. Third time this year. How is this even possible?

I found braces pretty painful, but I was 11-12 and had yet to have veneers, root canals etc done. I think the food aspect you won't find that bad. I hated the fact I couldn't drink fizzy drinks, but I don't as an adult now anyway, hard foods, wasn't as difficult, mostly toffees that sort of thing. Unless they've become weaker since early 2000s they can withstand quite a lot, as long as you're looking after them. Otherwise perhaps just keep on top of pain relief, did your dentist give you anything for if the braces are a bit sharp for your gums?

I've had a lot of work done over the last few years to try and get them all sorted first, so hopefully that's spread the issues out a bit. I could do with giving up fizzy drinks anyway so I'm hoping this will be the enforced impetus My bigger worry is just the whole getting things caught in it and staining (particularly as they're white). Going to be carrying around a toothbrush everywhere. Still on the soft foods at the moment, but hoping it's just a few days. Although he did put something in that basically stops me biting down properly while things are re-aligning as apparently my bite would bite onto the braces. Hoping it only lasts for the first month. He gave me some gel thing to rub into the gums/inner mouth if painful but not had to use any yet. Don't know if that's only because I've not really eaten anything adventurous yet. Mostly shoving something on a spoon and throwing it to the back of my throat. 1
