Daft Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 Beyond your family, how much do you share with people around you? Do you, subconsciously or not, tend to open up to people or avoid inward contact? I don't think I try and connect with people enough. I can hold a conversation for hours and make people laugh but in the end, I could have said absolutely nothing, inadvertently alienating myself.
Paj! Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 I'm not a very good socialiser, but I don't think I don't share things with people, in coversation.
Jimbob Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 I'm actually more open to my mates than i am to anyone in my family sometimes. Heck, they seem to be the first to know when something happens in my life. I'm very open to them all, i do hide some things from them but not everything. Things to do with work, i seem to tell the family first. Anything to do with relationships i tell my mates first, more importantly Andy because he seems to be the only one who doesn't laugh at my relationship mis-fortunes because of the last one he had. I have been open to all my previous g/f's so they know a lot about me and what i am/was like.
Cube Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 If I'm speaking to one person then I generally will open up. In a group then I sort of just listen to what everone is saying and keep quiet. Although in terms of talking about problems...er...well, here. I can't ask for help in real life. Don't know why, I just can't.
Ashley Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 I don't think I try and connect with people enough. I can hold a conversation for hours and make people laugh but in the end, I could have said absolutely nothing, inadvertently alienating myself. This partially. Some people I am more honest with than others but the deluded closed off fool in me believes "you be open with people, they eventually hurt you and you feel like a fool". I can be social with people. I can act very nice and charming and have some good friends, and plenty of acquaintances. I feel like I've learnt the rules for socialising and how to respond in situations (normally) but its all false. I'm not sure how tangenty this is getting but yes, I rarely open up with people. Even those I trust. I find it easier to deal with situations myself than with others. More "a problem shared is a problem doubled" rather than halved. [/ramble]
Gizmo Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 I tend to be the kind of person that will either boss a conversation or stand at the side with only the occasional quip. I struggle with small talk; holding a conversation with one person can be hard unless I have something of interest to talk about. I tend to try and talk to them normally, but it usually ends up with me telling a story or talking about myself, simply because it's easier, rather than asking them and listening to them. This annoys me immensely and is something I am working on. It also annoys my friends, since I tend to tell the same stories over and over.
S.C.G Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 I have no social skills whatsoever. Same and proud of it social skills are overrated anyways Imo.
Guest Captain Falcon Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 Whilst I'm no good at doing it, on the rare occasions when I do meet someone who captures my interest, I like trying to get to know them. Unfortunately, I find they quickly lose interest in me so things never go very far or last very long. Either that or I'm scaring them off - more fool me for caring it seems. I think on the whole though, the best way to describe me would be socially inept. I can't and won't fake interest in something I don't care about to make situations more comfortable for others.
S.C.G Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 I can't and won't fake interest in something I don't care about to make situations more comfortable for others. Hehe reminds me of the numerous times people have asked me at work about football, conversation usually goes something like this... Person : 'So did you see the match last night?' Me : 'The match?' Person : 'Yeah... football lol' Me : 'Oh I don't watch that' Person : 'You don't like football?' Me : 'It just doesn't interest me' *conversation dies* XD

Me : 'It just doesn't interest me' *conversation dies* XD I know the feeling all too well. At work, there is the one guys who sits next to me who is always talking about stuff I just don't care about but since I can't tell him to shut up (though I'd probably get a round of applause for doing so), I just have to sit there and ignore him. I won't make small talk with someone unless I'm deliberately trying to distract them from what's on their mind.
Dante Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 (edited) I have no social skills whatsoever. Same here but i am getting a little better at it. Slaggis Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 I feel so much more comfortable with friends, than with any members of my family. I'm a pretty open person (Half the time, probably too open), and love being around others, as long as I'm with at least someone I'm already comfortable being around. Throw me into a social situation with all new people, and I get totally freaked.
Ellmeister Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 Open more to friends, but still open to family. Tend not to talk about girls because usually my sisters know them somehow (stupid triplet same age sisters!). I can hold small talk, in fact I'm better at talking to girls than boys. Can do the whole sport and music talk with the lads as well. Its all about confidence, which thanks to my jobs and my friends has grown greatly Saying all this makes me sound soooooo great at speaking to people but I'm not. Meeting new people I struggle, I'm a slow burner with them, takes a while for me to get accustomed to them and speak like I do to everyone else with them.
Ganepark32 Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 I think I'm more open to friends than to my family. But even then, I really wouldn't express how I feel in a conversation to them as I just think it'd be weird. Can't speak to my family about anything as they don't really understand but I can talk for ages if pulled/brought into a conversation.
tapedeck Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 I'm a very social person and I love it. Open more with family about emotions but that's about it. I don't try to be unsociable to appear "mysterious" or "cool" in any way so I'm quite an open person. I am what I am as if someone doesn't like my social vibe then I have no time for them. I mix with anyone and everyone, talk to just about everyone and aim to make at least one person smile everyday. I'd rather have my life on this planet like that than create some kind of feel sorry for me vibe or deny myself human interaction or anything like that. I also call things as they are, 100% honesty. This can create scenarios where there are people who don't like it (in conversations) but at least I'm just commenting on what is really happening and not some lies, deceit or anything like that. I don't pussy foot around scenarios and people actually respect me more for it. So basically I'm an open-book to those who deserve my time and I'm a very social person and love every minute of it.
EEVILMURRAY Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 Some people I am more honest with than others but the deluded closed off fool in me believes "you be open with people, they eventually hurt you and you feel like a fool". Correct. Hehe reminds me of the numerous times people have asked me at work about football, conversation usually goes something like this... Person : 'So did you see the match last night?' Me : 'The match?' Person : 'Yeah... football lol' Me : 'Oh I don't watch that' Person : 'You don't like football?' Me : 'It just doesn't interest me' *conversation dies* XD I get that especially at work, I either say I don't mind playing but hate watching, or just go along with it. "See the match?" "Afraid not." "Oh [Player] did really well" "Really?" "Oh yes, [Club] are definitely going to go through/get relegated this season" "That goes without saying" It's amazing how many fall for this.

Dannyboy-the-Dane Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 I have been very introverted before, but I am beginning to open up. I'm not too good at meeting new people, but when around people I know and like or with whom I know I share interests, I open up and talk a lot, though at the same time still letting others talk just as much. I love debating for the sake of debating, something not all people understand. I don't keep my problems and thoughts from my friends, in fact I break some personal boundaries by coming out with personal and inner thoughts. There are still some areas of my mind that will definitely keep to myself, though.
Molly Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 I don't think any one person knows everything about me. I'm good with sharing how I feel on a day to day basis, but getting into the knitty gritty of deeper feelings or emotional problems, I can find that hard; depends on who I'm talking to. If I ever told someone everything I think is wrong with me, I'm sure they would put me on suicide watch; I don't feel that way inclined at all btw, it would just seem like alot to someone else. I struggle opening up about other things too, if I really like someone for example, that can be a minefield! I don't know, if I ever manage to express my feelings and get married, perhaps he will be the one person who knows everything about me
Coolness Bears Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 I'm useless at conversations and I'm not very good at socialising but I'm getting much better. My aim in life is to make people laugh I just have to overcome my last ounce of shyness in order to do that! I don't often speak about myself in a conversation so I should give more BUT I will tell anyone anything, if they just ask. Not sure how people become my friend but they must see something in me that they like!
mcj metroid Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 ha Was at a party with my family.. Christ every conversation was about soccer or the weather... so boring.. most people over 30 are desperately boring. like when you hit that milestone the interesting in everyone dies... that's my experience and it';s not everyone there are some great fun old people.
jayseven Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 Recently, every conversation seems to be about the future so my head just explodes. I tend to be quite open about myself, definitely more open than anyone else i know. I would say that everyone knows me better than I know them. It's probably a bad thing to say that. Sounds like I just talk about myself all the time >_<
