Charlie Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Time to make up some new mnemonics, Pluto is no longer a planet. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/5282440.stm?ls "They agreed that to qualify as a planet, a celestial body must be in orbit around a star while not itself being a star. It also must be large enough in mass "for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a... nearly round shape, and has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit." Pluto was automatically disqualified because its oblong orbit overlaps with Neptune's. It will now join a new category of "dwarf planets"."
conzer16 Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 You beat me to posting this! :p The only reason Pluto has been called a planet since it's discovery (circa 1930...??) is that astronomers did not yet know of the Kuiper Belt. Pluto is most definitely a Kuiper Belt Opject (KBO). It isn't even the biggest KBO!
Helmsly Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 ^ Thats from the BBC front page This sucks, Pluto was always my favourite planet. Now its not even a planet.
weeyellowbloke Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 So long Pluto, I loved you as a planet, now I shall love you as a dwarf.
ZeldaFreak Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 I can see it now: The Millionaire question for a million quid: How many planets are in the solar system? (A)12 (B)11 ©9 (D)8 And the correct answer according to Chris Tarrant is ©. Hey wait.....
Ashley Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 It isn't even the biggest KBO! Is it wrong KBO to me stands for Kristen Bell Online? (a website) Anywho, a bit weird news. Will throw schools into dissaray!

Iun Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 I swear this is all a onspiracy to get schools to buy more books. Sod the ruling, there are nine planets in the Iun Solar System! Do you hear me, 9!
Konfucius Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 I actually think this is a very good idea, so I can trick uninformed people into wrong answers *evilgrin* I can see a very good career for this fellow now, since Pluto isn't a Planet anymore I'm sure focus will shift to the other Pluto:

ShadowV7 Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Well I didn't expect this.Something to talk about in physics now other than those twin planets.Good-bye Planet Pluto...
Charlie Posted August 25, 2006 Author Posted August 25, 2006 ^ Betelgeuse? Those are lots of different stars. The Sun, the closest to us, was only 1 pixel compared to those other ones shown.
