Atomic Boo Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 I found a lot of mixed views of this game on the disappointing games thread and I'd just like to see people's full opinions on the game. I myself, think it was utter rubbish. The levels were boring and few, there was not much sense of speed and it was basically just a repeat of the 64 version but with better graphics. What is so special about the graphics and water effects? They may seem amazing when you first buy a Gamecube and compare it to a 64 but now with more titles available the best way to describe them is 'good'. There isnt enough variety in the controls and I ended up just repeating myself going in the same areas each lap. IMO If you are in outrage put me wrong, If you agree back be up.
Zell Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 I never bought this game because in my opinion it looked a pretty dull racer. Besides games like smash bros and rogue leaer were far better.
Guest Jordan Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 I agree, i bought it and I still own it. But theres two problems with what you've said. One, the water effects are still beyond any game i've ever played and secondly the controls are laggy and they suck.
gaggle64 Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 Both Wave Race 64 and Blue Storm are two simply fantastic racing games. The water effects on the 64 version blew away every other water-involved game, until Blue Storm came along, and has been blowing away the water effects from every game since. Even though the wave effects repeat (you have to look fairly closely), they can get so wild and numerous on the stormier settings that you never get any impression of predictability from any of the courses. The courses themselves are never less then highly imaginative and studded with wonderful set pieces: an Orca crashing through the waves; a large chunk of ice breaking off and creating a huge wave to ride; speeding between two massive docked freighters that threaten to crush you at any moment. The whole experience is just plain georgeous. The smattering of shortcuts that riddle the harder versions of the courses are both a challenge and a joy to find and then master. Learning to steer your jetski can be tricky at first, but once you've gotten wise of the mechanics, you'll be skipping, hopping, diving, gliding and pulling donuts over, under, through and around anything Neptune can throw at you. Holy crap I freakin' love this game. I'm going to play it NOW! Only one problem with Blue Storn though: a rather silly Time Trial mode, with a helicopter instead of an actual ghost. it's juts so, so silly. Bah. Still a fantastic game though.
Blue_Ninja0 Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 I played Blue Storm for a moth or so, had some fun with it but i get bored easily, so i stoped playing. Don't get me wrong, i think it was a good game, not great.
The Bard Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 I think it was one of the best games released this generation, and joint best racing game with F-Zero GX, despite the only character that was usable for me being Nigel Carver, but I am fucking fantastic at that game, and I love it. The tracks were brilliant, the only problem was that there were far too few of them to choose from. Everyone I've met hated it at first (including myself) because most of the characters were borderline unmaneuverable, but once you get the hang of it, it fucking rules. It's the only launch game I still go back to. Also: I love gaggle because he is infact right about everything
Fierce_LiNk Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 The wave race games are either love or hate games. Personally, i loved it. It's frustrating, but (to quote resident evil) beyond the hardship lies accomplishment! My only criticism was that, in multiplayer, the water effects werent as good. You lost that whole reflection effect.
Dcubed Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 The original is a masterpiece and the sequel's gameplay is just as good, if not better but it is the atmosphere and the music that kills Blue Storm. Gone is the feel good atmosphere, gone is the wonderfull Hajimi Wakai music and the iconic flamboyant announcer and instead is a crappy "edgey" style, with crappy music and purely american announcers. The game tries far too hard to be cool and feels too americanised (You can attribute that to the fact that NST made Blue Storm) and as a result, despite the brilliant gameplay, BS has lost the magic that was overflowing in the original game. Hopefully with Katsuya Eguchi making Wii Motor Sports, he'll be back in the saddle for a new Wave Race game.
Mikey Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 Very underrared game. Much better than the original. My favourite aspect is the way the Jet Skis have weight to them, meaning you have to really drag them around the water to turn, unlike the 64 edition which was too easy to turn. I think it was one of the best games released this generation, and joint best racing game with F-Zero GX, despite the only character that was usable for me being Nigel Carver, but I am fucking fantastic at that game, and I love it. The tracks were brilliant, the only problem was that there were far too few of them to choose from. It's the only launch game I still go back to. Also: I love gaggle because he is infact right about everything Yes, you have to get used to the physics to enjoy it.
mike-zim Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 i tried to play it. i got it at launch and i really did give it a go. but i just couldnt control the skies so i had 0 enjoyment from it. i traded it in for rogur leader and loved that game to bits i am still trying to complete it even now, although WoW has all my time atm.

You lost that whole reflection effect. Atleast it wasn't as bad as 1080's avalanche multi... in that you lost alot of the main effects and the frame rate dragged its ass!
mcj metroid Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 Blue storm was shite!i barely even played it.How it scored that high is beyond me!wow......nintendo making extreme sports game let's score it high!
Kurtle Squad Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 Atleast it wasn't as bad as 1080's avalanche multi... in that you lost alot of the main effects and the frame rate dragged its ass! Erm...what about the worst part???...Losing all the tracks.
Hero-of-Time Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 I just could not get into this game. I probably would have liked it better if it was just a straight race without having to go through the flags. I still own the game and maybe I will try it again someday. You are very right in saying that it is a love/hate game. My mate loves it and is pretty good at it where as I cant stand it and pretty much abysmal at it.
DiemetriX Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 I loved this game. Played it to bits. Didn't like it at first but it quicly grew on me.
Caris Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 I loved this game. Played it to bits. Didn't like it at first but it quicly grew on me. Same to me, the grpahics at the time were mindblowing.
Fierce_LiNk Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 If a mate of mine came over to my house and i was about to introduce him to my lovely Gamecube, i would not let him play this game. From a graphical stance, it's gorgeous. Lovely water and weather effects, you can't fault it. The gameplay...its difficult. I would never play this in multiplayer with someone who has never played this game before. It takes a while to master this, and to get used to the controls. Once you get into it, its a fantastic game. But, it takes a lot of getting used to.
Blue_Ninja0 Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 I think very few people liked this game on his 1st try. Playing it without knowing how the physics work is a pain in the ass and can drive any player to think the game is just flawed and sucks. As soon as you get the grip of it, it's really an enjoyable racer IMO.
ThePigMarcher Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 I am another who loved this game. Its one of the few launch games that I still return to quite regularly , although I do wish that more tracks had been included. I love the series anyway , and wasn't disappointed in this at all but I can understand why some people just cannot get into it.
Shotgun2k Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 Absolutely loved WR:BS - the joy is in the handling for me; the way you literally ride the waves, the way they throw you about...and IMO it's a beautiful looking game
Twozzok Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 Never played Blue Strom, but the N64 version was pretty damn cool. Though I do have to say, nothing beats the Hydro Thunder arcade version in the water sports category. (Nothing to do with the fact you could probably play forever and it'd keep 'unlocking' the next level)
nekunando Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 Wave Race: Blue Storm is one of my favourite games ever! I keep going back to it and trying to master controlling different characters. I love the courses. I love the weather. I love the physics. I LOVE WAVE RACE. ..but noone else I know does..
Owen Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 Once i new how to control the jet ski well! I LOVED this game. However it didn't have alot to it....the graphics blew me away though (espicially the water), i remember that! I fully completed it, i think.....
faz99 Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 I loved this game! It was brilliant. At the beginning the physics are hard to get used to, i mean i was very frustrated with it, it was like playing F-Zero GX in master, or Super Mario Kart... Unreal. But once you get the hang its really fun, and you really get a feel for the control of how the waves and your jetski works. It still is a break your controller game though. Also playing Aspen Lake in a lovely sunny day, only to find that a thunderstorm sets in is probably the highlight for me Love Aspen Lake!
