Daz, you're delusional. Nobody's bashing anything. The dialogue here concerns Sony's seemingly new approach to the console market, how they're actually listening to user feedback and how they're implementing the right things. I'm not sold on the line-up so far but I'd be an idiot if I was expecting to be. All that matters to me is their commitment to gaming, you can see it every facet of the PS4 - the games themselves, the hardware, the new features; the whole shebang. And why would I have any reason to doubt them after their performance this generation?

I think most people, when thinking about the PS3, just think of the rocky start it had. If you look at where it started and then look at what it has become Sony did a hell of a job in getting back some of the market they lost. They invested heavily in new IPs and with a fair few games still to be released on the PS3 that momentum will help selling PS4 consoles.

The way Nintendo and to a certain extent Microsoft abandoned their consoles is baffling.

A touchpad could be good for gesture shortcuts if you want to select a certain weapon or spell. Would make games like Skyrim a little easier to stomach.

I think the most important thing to consider is the number of options developers now have. They have the standard controller, but now they also have options to use the touch pad if they wish, or the camera if they have an idea of how to use it well. They won't be used in every game, I'm sure, but the options are there. It might look like they 'lack focus' right now, but I actually see this as a huge positive point. They're giving developers a number of new options if they wish to use them. In a couple of years we might look back and say 'well, the camera thing never really took off', but that's fine, it will just mean that developers couldn't think of a good way to use it. At least they had the option there if they had wanted it. Of course, we might be saying 'we use the camera and touchpad in literally every game, how did we ever game without them?'

For me, the most important point is that Sony is providing developers with choices. As long as the new features are of a high enough quality (touch pad is responsive, camera isn't shit) then I don't think it's a negative point at all.

It's not going to be like that at all. If the specs are true it'll probably just mean the PS4 has the slight edge when it comes to maxed out first party games.

Choze I got a diagram from VGChartz and transposed it here.

Console power:

Wii U: --

720 /: ----------------------------

PS4 /: ------------------------------

I'd hardly say that was 'bang in the middle', you nutter.

Apparently Blockbuster are selling cheap PS + 1 year cards, with someone on HotUKDeals posting that they got a 1 year card for £12 at a Blockbuster in Blackpool. Might be worth checking if you have a local store.

Jonathan Blow on the power of PS4 and how sharing will change the way we play

Developing for PlayStation 4 is leaner than making games for PC and its Share button could change the way we play console games, says Jonathan Blow.

We spoke to the Braid creator after he took to the stage at PlayStation Meeting to announce that his next project The Witness will be a launch window exclusive on PS4. Blow seemed impressed by the new console’s power and its developer-friendly architecture.

“For The Witness we’re mostly interested in the base machine and how fast it is – the fact it has faster RAM than a PC, which really helps in shuttling graphics resources around, and since it’s not running a heavyweight operating system like Windows that gets in the way of your graphics,” he told us. “Rendering stuff through Windows has an impact on performance. Since a console is just about games, that doesn’t happen, and the equivalent game will run faster. And if you can target to specific hardware you can make it run faster, too.”

He added that the addition of the Share button is integral to the new console, stating that that PS4 has been built around the social feature.

“In general, as a platform feature, it’s super interesting,” he said. “One thing that most game developers have become really aware of is that over the past couple of years on YouTube the whole livecast and commentary thing is really huge.”

“A lot of people are paying a lot of attention to it now and it’s interesting to see what happens if you base an entire console around it. That’s what’s crazy about PS4 – it has a chip that’s always recording to a maybe two-minute buffer. After something cool happens, it’s there in the buffer. That’s the sort of thing that’s really going to change the way something’s used.”

You can read more from Blow about why The Witness is coming to PS4 first through the link, and the full interview later this afternoon.

I like J Blow's name.

When I saw the launch details for the PS4, I thought all the share stuff looked amazing.

Now after some reflection I've realised, I'll never want to share, and there's just a wasted button on the controller for something I'll never do. Why not just put it in the menu somewhere?

After 34 pages I'm sure someone's said this already but I'm just admitting how caught up I was in the hype machine.

OCTOBER?!?! how can i afford something without a price? :weep:

Also i agree shorty, i don't care for sharing and although its a cool idea some will use, i bet 80% won't and it could have been an option in the ps menu

It's also currently only Facebook and Ustream (and PSN itself). Ustream doesn't interest me and Facebook is the last place I want to share gaming stuff.

I'm assuming you can export the footage to your HDD. If you can't then that will blow. It would be strange if it didn't.

HDD saves and YouTube options are a must.
