Dannyboy-the-Dane
Ugh, I hate this day. I hate how fucking commercialised it is, how fucking lovey-dovey everything is, how fucking lonely I- HOLD IT! Audio I'll have no such negativity in my life! Not anymore! Yes, it's a commercialised day, but so are all holidays nowadays ... days. If people want to participate, I'm all for it. A sappy romantic like myself can't hate a holiday centered around love and romance. And frankly, love is a great thing to celebrate, not just romantic love, but any kind of love. Love is great! So what if you're single on this particular day? You could meet the perfect soulmate tomorrow! Or maybe the day after that! Love could be waiting around every corner, so why stay in and mope? Go out and live life! Be happy and loving, and you're bound to find love and happiness. *reads own post again* *starts writing acceptance speech for the Most Positive Member Award 2011*
jayseven
We're swapping cards this year. Valentines day is an excellent calendar event for people who are unable to be spontanious, yet are in a relationship. One year my girl kept trying to use coyness/cuteness to earn a rose from me. Fact is roses are more expensive this time of year, and the effect of gifting one is surely at its lowest on feb 14th! Anyway, we went to ASDA to find dinner (fajitas) and while waiting for the bus some christian dude gave her a rose "from god, who loves us all" and gave me a Twix. Legend. So yeah! She got a rose in the end and I didn't pay a penny for it. End of rubbish anecdote. And Wesley-style-writing. Tomorrow we'll try our hand at a jigsaw, eat some food, watch a movie, and just generally enjoy each others company and, I guess, be slightly more aware of just how lucky we each are (because hey, y'know, this is jayseven we're talking about here! Ahem).
Supergrunch
Fact is roses are more expensive this time of year, and the effect of gifting one is surely at its lowest on feb 14th! The florists round the corner from me was selling single roses for £5! I don't understand how people actually buy them. I wrote my girlfriend a sonnet instead. Ashley
The florists round the corner from me was selling single roses for £5! I don't understand how people actually buy them. I wrote my girlfriend a sonnet instead. My nan's birthday is on VDay (...today) and I contemplated ordering flowers to her house before realising it would be stupidly expensive so I got some for her when I saw her last week. After spending Friday night telling my drunken classmates that while I love Jodie I do not want to sleep with her (because we're just friends) I feel I may send mix signals...as she got me a (free) valentines day card and we're going to the pub tomorrow night. But I have a glaring indifference towards the whole day really.
Diageo
My predictive text didn't know "Valentine" so I just gave up. Luckily enough, he was online as the day changed over and I was able to send him an IM. Easier than expected. I can now go through my day without a worry. Caris
I've only been seeing my girlfriend 3 weeks, so I see Valentines Day as an ideal opportunity to get in the good books.

The Bard
Giant who gives a fuck? I mean, I would like to be given a fuck, sure, but really, all this bullshit holiday does is propagate the whole economy of hallmark-card affection in some sort of cynical transaction for kinky sex. That made no sense. Sorry, I've not had sleep for weeks and am going insane.

Rummy
Hey mans and manettes! Don't let V Day get you down! Make the effort, do something and go out anyway instead of sitting at home wallowing! Give V day the V! That's what I'm attempting to do. I am either going to find a pretty girl to spend it with but not like that, or arrange my usual monday night pub crew and suggest we all treat ourselves to a chinese or something! Wesley
I don't get people bitching how Valentine's Day is all commercialised. I often here people say, "It's just made up by the card companies." Well, firstly it's obviously not made up by a fucking card company. And secondly, it's about as commercialised as Easter, Christmas, birthday celebrations and all the rest of the yearly bullshit. If you find it too commercialised then fine, but I bet you love sitting around a big assed table full of gifts when it's your birthday. Anyway, Valentine's day is ok, don't really do a lot on it. Kind of feel meh about it, just like birthdays and Christmas and crap.
Beast
I don't get people bitching how Valentine's Day is all commercialised. I get it but it's not the reason why I don't like it because, as you have said, it's just as commercialised as Easter, birthdays and Christmas. The reason why I don't really like it is because it's supposed to be one day of the year where you show love to your partner or tell someone you fancy that you like them...should you not be doing that anyway? Does it really take Valentine's Day for you to tell your husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend/person you like that you love them? Same goes for Pancake Day, does it really take Pancake Day for you to have a pancake? Why not have one at some point in the year? I had a couple last month. People may argue that it makes it more special and whatnot but I still can't see why it takes Valentine's Day to tell your partner you love them. If it was me, I'd tell my partner every now and again or every week, heck, even every day if she wanted me to. It's just another way for businesses and restaurants to get money from you. As I have said in another post on this thread, you can do it at home for those who like the day. I'm normally happy every day anyway so it doesn't really bother me, lol. Don't worry, be happy- that's what I say!
Wesley
I don't really get the first part of what you're saying, the "it's supposed to...". It's really up to the person to interpret it how they want. Also, I agree with you about Pancake Day. So does this man:
Beast
What I mean is Valentine's Day used to be about sending cards to people who you fancied and the sender is anonymous. Now it's about telling your partner how much you love them by going out or buying a gift. Should you not be doing this anyway at some point in your life as a couple (telling them you love them, not necessarily the gifts part)? Why does it take Valentine's Day to tell your missus/husband that you love them? Also, Karl Pilkington is a legend!
