I'm promising myself right now that i won't buy this, unless it comes out as a complete set on disk. Then i will purchase.

Fan-made game.

I know it's a fan-made game, but it has some visual and audio issues.

I'd say it suffers from "too much shit going on screen at once" syndrome and it looks like it's difficult to tell what you can and cannot step on, what ARE enemies ad what are not. It has to be CLEAR for a platforming game to work.

and in fairness the music could be done better too but meh It's a fan-made game. It's hard to be critical without feeling guilty :)

Just got the iPhone version, it's ok. I just with the controls could get sorted out, it plays as badly as the ports of Sonic 1 and 2 when it should really be quite an easy fix.

I can't see a platforming game like Sonic being any good at all without a proper D-pad/buttons.

^ This... they've basically just wasted their time bringing it to iPhone, sure it'll still sell - as seems to have been proven, unless you got it for free Will? - but why would you want to have a version of the game out there which is inferior thanks to lack of any 'proper' controls?

It's basically a bad advertisement for a game which seems otherwise awesome on the other available platforms... y'know... the ones actually designed with gaming in mind as opposed to trying to be good at everything. :p

I paid for it but that was only due to not being bothered to dig around for a code, not sure I would have paid for it as a consumer though.

Control-wise it's definitely possible to make the software controls work, it just seems that they've failed with it. We put it on an iPad to see if it was any better with a larger area (another annoyance that it's not universal) but still it seems pretty poor.

Hmmm the cynic in me thinks they've brought out the iphone one first so people will buy it think its cool but find themselves hindered by the controls and double dip and buy one of the other versions next week...

I've played the first zone on the iPhone and I actually really like it. It's definitely the closest thing to the original games albeit rather flawed. The iPhone's interface itself... the controls aren't too bad but the Special Stage controls make it pretty much impossible and very frustrating.

The most annoying thing to me is the general feel/momentum of the game. I just don't understand why they've changed certain things. When I come out of a loop I expect to be able to press nothing and continue to fly forward at ever increasing pace, but all to often Sonic will just... stop. If you spin-dash off a ledge, the landing will also cause you to stop unless you are holding forwards. On the other hand jumping is much closer to the old games than I had thought.

One thing I can't help thinking though is why level design, bosses, power ups and special stages have taken a leap right back to Sonic 1. This is meant to be Sonic 4 so it should be a step beyond Sonic 3. Yet you get the first boss from Sonic 1, no interesting shield types and levels ripped straight from Sonic 2.

Some people will probably love this but not me.

^Remember the whole idea was that episode 1 was basically created as a nostalgia fest to get people back into playing a 2D Sonic game on console, then episodes 2 and 3 would be the ones trying to be more diverse.

I forget where this was mentioned but it was very early on.

Also, the Sonic 1 boss at least changes his attack pattern as it goes on right? I dunno if maybe you killed him too quickly to notice. I think that's the theme of all the bosses "Like you remember, but with a twist".

This is £6 on the iPhone. You can get it now, but I'm not sure if the control would be any good. I've read some user reviews and they say that Sonic doesn't have any momentum any more. So when you stop pushing right, he just stops dead which makes tricky jumps harder than they need to be.

Anybody else tried it on iPhone?

Yes, see posts above by Will' and myself... I basically said the same point about momentum.

D'oh! I should really learn to read threads properly!! Thanks!

Not sure about getting this now - seems like it may get really frustrating! Wish they'd do a Lite version

Oh iPhone this is completely underwhelming. The screen rotating when you go through a loop-de-loop seems like the biggest leap forward since 1994/5 is it?

The way Sonic controls, the way he looks, the way everything looks cluttered. Throw in the fact that you can choose which zones you want to tackle thus adding some sort of multiple choice into a traditional "story/journey" seems weird too.

The controls are poor and as seen in the classic re-releases on iPhone, again SEGA can't even implement a decent D-Pad and jump button.

It's a reminder that Sonic's redesign may have worked in a 3D setting but the 'feel' of Sonic is just not enjoyable - play Sonic 1-2 on the iPhone then play this and it just feels unenjoyable.

But then again, I actually adored Sonic 1-3 and Knuckles to some extent so this is completely different.

And why tease the old looking Sonic sprite prior to levels starting? Seems completely out of place and pointless if Sonic has been "redesigned".

Finished the iPhone version and loved it, I disagree with everything tapedeck said really aha. iPhone version is poor though but the consoles should be awesome.

Played it again and there's no doubt that it is a good game and that it is a sonic game. But there are plenty of things that bug me. There's a level on the casino ripoff zone which is just a total joke, and the lack of momentum naturally carrying sonic forwards is still irritating.

Lols, just beat a boss and Sonic pulls his classic finger wagging pose. Except that his 3D model on the iPhone doesn't have fingers, so he just wags a fist like he's calling you a wanker

Also, four zones for 1200 MS points? £6 on the iPhone? Madness.
