nekunando Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 What is the best Super Nintendo game ever made? Which Xbox 360 title is already the definitive classic? What Atari, Dreamcast and PlayStation experiences are most worth remembering? Growing tired of the internet’s countless, wishy-washy attempts to answer such questions, we decided to make the tough decisions ourselves. You’ll find no Top 5s, Top 7s, Top 15s or Top 100s here - just a single winner and runner up for each platform. We didn’t stop at only the obvious systems, either, but declared champions on everything from the Wii, Genesis and PSP to the Virtual Boy, Jaguar and Apple II. That’s three decades worth of potential controversy! Before you disagree with our final choices, however, take note of our criteria. To win, a title had to be more than “good.†Adjectives like “important,†“essential,†“groundbreaking†and “acclaimed†must also apply. The following games are not merely the best... they’re the greatest. GamesRadar What does everyone think? What do you agree with? What do you not agree with? I can see plenty of examples where I think better games could have been selected.. but hey, it's not my list
darksnowman Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 I had a skim down it all. Didn't really care about the middle pages. Going by the Nintendo consoles, its difficult to really argue with their choices cos it looks they went by the books. Maybe its a bit weird that there was no OoT for the N64, but Mario 64 is a classic too. I was disappointed to see the likes of Metroid and SSB: Melee feature, but you can still understand where they are coming from.

What would be your GC choices? For Me: N64 - Ocarina of Time and F-Zero X Gamecube - SSBM and Resi 4 Wii - Mario Kart Wii and Wii Sports Gameboy - Pokemon Red and Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3. Dreamcast - Shenmue and Resident Evil: Code Veronica Amiga 500 - didn't really have any favourites, just loads of fun games!
Cube Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 My choices (on consoles I owned): N64: Banjo-Kazooie and Perfect Dark GameCube: Metroid Prime and Wind Waker Wii: Metroid Prime 3 and Twilight Princess PlayStation: I only remember GTA Xbox 360: Bioshock and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts Master System: I only remember Alex Kidd Mega Drive: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Streets of Rage 2 Saturn: I only remember The Story of Thor 2 PC (2000s): Half-Life 2/Orange Box and other Valve stuff (I'm not really a big PC gamer) GBA: Metroid Fusion and Minish Cap DS: Sonic Rush Adventure & Diddy Kong Racing Edit: Odd...I like the Zelda franchise more then Metroid and yet I've just realised I like the Metroid games more than the Zelda ones...

Jonnas Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 Heh, it all comes down to opinion. Not that it is a bad thing. NES: Megaman 2 > Super Mario Bros. 3 SNES (SO hard to choose): Donkey Kong Country 2 > Super Castlevania IV (but I still need to play Fire Emblem 4 as well) N64: Ocarina of Time > Super Mario 64 Gamecube: SSBM > Metroid Prime PS1: Final Fantasy IX > Tekken 3 PS2 (Another hard one, even if my experience with it is somewhat limited): Timesplitters 2 > Tekken 5 Mega Drive: Sonic 3 & Knuckles > Sonic 2 (although there're a bunch of games I haven't purchased for the VC yet) Game Boy: Pokémon Gold/Silver > Tetris GBA (Hardest one yet): Fire Emblem 7 > Golden Sun 2: Lost Age Nintendo DS: Elite Beat Agents > Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin I won't say any games for the PC, though. Too much. NES: Marble MadnessSNES: Super Mario Bros. 3 - A Link To The Past A bit misplaced, are we Flinky?
Jimbob Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 Good list from Gamesradar, it did miss a few classics out though. So with that said. My best games on the systems i own(ed) in order of owning NES - Duck Hunt or Super Mario Brothers Gameboy - Tetris Megadrive - Sonic the Hedgehog III (w/t Knuckles) Gameboy Color - Links Awakening DX N64 - Ocarina of Time, Majoras Mask, Banjo Kazooie and Mario 64 Gameboy Advance - Minish Cap and the NES Classic series Gamecube - Wind Waker/Twilight Princess and Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes Nintendo DS - Phantom Hourglass and New Super Mario Bros X-Box 360 - Fable II or Gears of War Wii - Super Smash Brothers Brawl I know some of them have 2 or more on the lists, but i couldn't wittle them down any further. I'm not a PC gamer, so these have been missed from my lists. All of the above are in my opinion the best i've played on the systems above.
Grazza Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 Very difficult, but... Megadrive: Landstalker SNES: Super Mario World (maybe Super Metroid if I'd played it) Game Boy: Link's Awakening Saturn: (very difficult choice) Guardian Heroes N64: Ocarina/Majora Dreamcast: Skies of Arcadia (in all honesty, I played it on GC) GameCube: Wind Waker GBA: Metroid: Zero Mission Xbox: Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath PS2: Dragon Quest VIII DS: Phoenix Wright
Portlett Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 NES: Mario Bros 3 SNES: Super Mario World & Zelda 3 N64: Ocarina of Time & GOldeneye Playstation: FF 7 PS2:Pro Evo series (my experience was slightly limited) Cube: Metroid Prime & Resi 4 Wii: Mario Galaxy 360: Halo 3 gameboy: Pokemon Red DS: Mario Kart DS
Emasher Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 My choices: NES: SMB3/Zelda SNES: ALttP/Super Metroid/SMW N64: OoT/Mario 64 GCN: WW/Metroid Prime/ToS Wii: MP3/Galaxy GB: Pokemon Red/Blue GBC: Pokemon G/S GBA: Metroid Zero Mission/Minish Cap/All the GBA Pokemon games DS: Pokemon D/P/Zelda PH/NSMB Some consoles have more than 2 for me.
Patch Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 Very difficult, but... Megadrive: Landstalker Dreamcast: Skies of Arcadia (in all honesty, I played it on GC) DS: Phoenix Wright I love you. Download Landstalker on VC and join the Landstalker VC Completist Clan. Current members: me.
darksnowman Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 I love you.Download Landstalker on VC and join the Landstalker VC Completist Clan. Current members: me. I'm (eventually) joining that clan. Almost no runners up in my list, I've just been harsh and picked the best: Nes - Super Mario Bros. 3 Gameboy - Link's Awakening Snes - Donkey Kong Country 3 N64 - Majora's Mask Gameboy Color - Mario Golf / Harvest Moon Gamecube - Skies of Arcadia: Legends Gameboy Advance - Pokémon Ruby (DS and Wii could still have their best ahead of em...)
D_prOdigy Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 Lemme join in! GB: Pokemon Red GBC: Pokemon Gold/Silver GBA: Golden Sun PSone: Digimon World (seriously) Gamecube: Tales of Symphonia Wii (so far) : Metroid Prime 3 DS (so far) : The World Ends With You
Fierce_LiNk Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 A bit misplaced, are we Flinky? The first time I played the game was on the Super Mario All Stars Cartridge. So, that's why I shoved it in the SNES column.
Grazza Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 I love you.Download Landstalker on VC and join the Landstalker VC Completist Clan. Current members: me. LOL, thanks! Your goodwill made it through the internet and burst through my computer! I promise I'll download Landstalker when I get a Wii. What a great game, eh? Some of my choices were difficult, but not that one. It had an atmosphere I haven't seen since, although I found Dragon Quest VIII surprisingly similar in tone.
Ganepark32 Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 It's an alright list on Gamesradar. Seeing as everyone else has, I'll give my opinion. NES - Super Mario Bros. 3 and Legend of Zelda SNES - Link To The Past and Chrono Trigger N64 - Ocarina of Time and Mario 64 (I haven't played Majora's Mask and haven't played Goldeneye enough to enjoy it much) Gamecube - Metroid Prime 1 and Resident Evil 4 (although Wind Waker is pretty damn close) Gameboy/Color - Link's Awakening and Survival Kids Gameboy Advance - Astroboy and Metroid Fusion Wii (so far) - Super Mario Galaxy and Okami DS (it's probably had it's best games by now) - The World Ends With You and Ouendan Megadrive - Sonic 3 (yes it was short but it's the best in the series) and Gunstar Heroes Dreamcast - Soul Calibur (it can't be anything other than this.) and Ikaruga Xbox - Star Wars: KotOR and Halo 1 And there we are. My choices. HAven't played enough PS1 or PS2 games to pass judgement on them.
darksnowman Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 DS (it's probably had it's best games by now) - The World Ends With You and Ouendan Dragon Quest 9, man. That game has potential!
Patch Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 LOL, thanks! Your goodwill made it through the internet and burst through my computer! I promise I'll download Landstalker when I get a Wii. What a great game, eh? Yep. It's a fantastic game. I just love light-hearted humorous RPGs (or action RPGs in this case). Which is why I'm glad to see some Skies loving too. I might give DQVIII a try if it fits in that category. I put this off for a while, thinking it would be too difficult, but here goes. Greatest games I've owned: Atari 2600: Berzerk BBC Micro: Repton 3 Speccy: Spellbound Dizzy Game & Watch: Fire! NES: Super Mario Bros. 3 Master System: Shinobi Gameboy: Tetris SNES: Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past Megadrive: Streets of Rage II N64: Goldeneye 007 Playstation: Final Fantasy VII Gameboy Advance: Wario Ware Gamecube: Metroid Prime Playstation2: GTA: Vice City
Ganepark32 Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Yeh, it has the potential and will probably be good but I've never played a Dragon Quest title, probably should as I do like RPGs, and by the time it comes out here, most of us will have moved on. Perhaps even the DS' successor may have been revealed, seeing as I doubt it'll be released in the west, more so Europe than the US, until 2010.
Grazza Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Dragon Quest 9, man. That game has potential! Definitely. For me, it depends on how much quality it keeps from Dragon Quest VIII (awesome), and how much the DS downgrades it. Hopefully the balance falls in the right place. Yep. It's a fantastic game. I just love light-hearted humorous RPGs (or action RPGs in this case). Which is why I'm glad to see some Skies loving too. I might give DQVIII a try if it fits in that category. Yeah, humorous, colourful and cartoony but not surreal - perfect. If you still have your PS2 and enjoy a true RPG (like Skies, of course), I couldn't recommend it more. It's £9.99 (in stock) at Gameplay. OK, you might not like it, but it's one of those games you might love. It's called Journey of the Cursed King, by the way.
mcj metroid Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 atari 2600- pressure cooker c64- last ninja 2 master system: hmm an alex kidd game at leasti cant pick nes: super mario bros 3 megadrive: sonic 2,mercs,thunderforce iv i cant pick! mega cd: sonic cd Dreamcast: soul calibur(although one of the few games i played) snes: super metroid n64: super mario 64 or majora's mask ps1: ape escape, tombi, micromachines v3 all deserve mentions for me gamecube: metroid prime and f-zero gx ps2: MASHED!!! xbox: fable xbox 360: gears of war ps3: warhawk wii: super mario galaxy gameboy: pokemon yellow or link's awakening gameboy colour: super mario dx gameboy advanced: advanced wars 2 ds: advanced wars dual strike and hotel dusk streets of rage is a game I never got really.. It's fun but it's nowhere near the best megadrive game in my opinion.. I'm not sure when I play games like that for more than 1 hour I get numb.. I;m odd but I tended to prefer golden axe and even streets of rage 1.
Guest Captain Falcon Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 NES - Super Mario Bros. 2 SNES - Zelda: A Link to the Past N64 - Super Mario 64 GameCube - Metroid Prime Wii - Super Mario Galaxy GameBoy - Donkey Kong Land 2 GameBoy Color - Super Mario Bros Deluxe GameBoy Advance - Metroid: Zero Mission DS: Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin Megadrive: either Sonic 3 (without knuckles) or Streets of Rage 2 PlayStation: Metal Gear Solid PlayStation 2: Gradius V Xbox 360: GTAIV (though I've not played very many at all) The only category that I'm had any really trouble deciding is for the GBA. I know I've given 2 for the MD, but it is only between them 2. The GBA has so many great games that if you asked me on another day what my favourite is, I may say Fire Emblem, Golden Sun 1 or 2 or Zelda; Minish Cap instead. I think I've gone with M:ZM because in terms of pure gameplay, I think it may have the edge, even though it has flaws the others don't. And as for the PC, that has to be without any doubt Star Wars: Dark Forces II -Jedi Knight. The sequel may seem better today but the original blew my mind back in the day with some incredible levels that were so much fun to play and epic in scope for a mere FPS - not that was much shooting involved past the fourth level.
Ganepark32 Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 Just realised I'd forgotten a couple of platforms. So I'll put them here. PC-Engine/Turbo-Grafx - Super Star Soldier and/or basically any of the endless number of shmups as they were all really good and Bonk. PC-Engine CD - Castlevania: Rondo of Blood Atari ST - Turrican GP32 - Blue Angelo and Kimichiman
Sheikah Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 Xbox - Halo 2. Oh lord. Easily the worst Halo game in the series. Mario 64 seems an odd choice for the 64, as there is so much better. Mario 64 was revolutionary but still easily bested by games such as Banjo Kazooie. GTA San Andreas too...ack. No way. But at the end of the day it is their opinion. Or a group of opinions of a few people. It means no more than the opinions of anyone else. Edit: Just saw Phantom Hourglass as their best DS game so far. No, just get out. That's not even funny. Easily one of the worst Zelda games I've played.
