Meals for Students

Cube

Recommended Posts

Has anyone got any idea on good meals for students. As in cheap, but taste OK. I don't mind how long it takes to make.

My problem is coming up with ideas on what to have. If I have a list of stuff, I can get the stuff (if it's cheap), and cook it easily it's just the "what do I eat?" part I can't get past. Because of this, my last month has consisted of: Meatballs, Pasta & Sauce, Toast, Chips & Fish Fingers, Spag Bol and Chicken in sauce with rice. Which is hardly diverse.

So, any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I'd say thai curry is a defo student fav of mine. Not out the jar sauce though. Get the paste which will last you for plenty of curries and then get a tin of coconut milk each time (like 40p) and some rice works magic...

Lasagne is relatively cheap and easy to make from scratch.

errr...thats all I can think of...getting the bits for the odd roast dinner can be pretty cheap for one as well...

I say learn to cook. I did I knew how to cook abit before but now I am a really good cook (so my girlfriend and family tell me)

Pasta Carbonara. Best meal ever.

Quite a lot of the jars of pasta sauce from the supermarket are nice, you can get some good pasta bakes. There's a nice tomato and marscapone one too.

Also, omelettes. Easy and quick.

And cheese on toast.

Carbonara is awesome, but you cannot buy sauce. Saying that, NEVER buy a pasta sauce, they are simple enough to make. Except pesto. Buy a jar of that.

I can make loads of different types of pastas, puttanesca is one of my personal favourites.

I can cook. In fact, I cooked most of the food when I was at home. And there's 6 of us...admittedly 2 don't eat that much...then again, me eating as I cook (don't worry, I don't eat half-cooked meat) probably made up for that.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Pesto is easy to make and tastes like 1302482384392 times better than shop bought, carbonara works a treat as quick and super tasty food, rast dinner is win, roast a chicken one night, the next day you can have chicken sandwiches then chicken curry, then chicken soup, four meals in one.

Never tried puttanesca, what is it/what is it like? I prefer homemade pasta sauce, but if you're in a rush and have places to be they are very convenient. Pasta is very good seeing you can get a like 3kg bag of it for about 98p from tesco and asda.

It's superb, we put red chillis in it so it has a nice kick.

The definitive list of "What I've lived on for a year and a bit."

Pasta, Pasta sauce and Tuna. Even if you don't like tuna, its good. Just make the pasta and mix in the sauce and tuna.

Pizza, Garlic Bread/Pasta and Salad. Epic finger food in front of the TV.

Sainsbury's chicken breast range, always 2 for £5. The Chicken/Cheese/Bacon ones are the best. Great with mixed veg (frozen mixed bag) and curly fries (99p, same shop).

Diced chicken and sauce with rice. Get some chicken breast, chuck it in a wok with a bit of oil, cook, add sauce of choice. White/red wine sauce. Curry. Tikka. Whatever. Serve with rice. (Rice cookers ftw)

Pasta/Ham/Cheese bake. Make loads of pasta, mix in a cheese sauce (the kind you make from a powder with milk). Chuck in a meat (chopped ham and pork, or smoked bacon if you're feeling fancy). Onions if you like em. Mix it all up, add grated cheese to the top and bake on 5 for 40-45 mins. Awesome.

Microwave meals are always good. But for gods sake don't get the economy ones.

A whole chicken. The cheapest way to get chicken, a frozen whole one. Defrost for 24 hours and cook in a little oil for... ages. You can get fancy and glaze it. Make sure you get the giblets out. Add taters to the pan for some roasties! Serve with veg.

Sausages. Bacon. Eggs. Bread. Get em from a market if you can. Sandwiches and breakfasts galore!

Toasties. Nuff said.

Instant noodles. They're not a meal. Don't eat them alone, you'll starve to death and rot in a gutter dehydrated on the beers you thought you could handle after three days on a diet of sainsburys curry instant ramen. But break a block in half and it pads out any meal!

Frozen food department has all kinds of burgers, chicken fillets, bagged sausages (bargain, and do em straight on the grill), breadcrumbed fish, chips, potatoes, veggies and when you absolutely must feel full, ice cream.

And don't ignore that bargain shelf just because the sell by dates have been scribbled out!

RAMEN RAMEN RAMEN!!!

Sooo many flavours, 30p a pack or cheaper, you can buy in bulk at any chinese supermarket, works as a quick snack or lunch, or if you have 2 bowls as a meal when your being uber lazy.

I lived off ramen for 2 weeks, it was a total life saver!

^ that's a good list there. It's easy to eat junk all the time though...

Chicken fillets are good to add to pasta or rice or noodles along with a sauce - mostly been buying the sauce but a couple of spoons of pesto and a jar of chopped tomatoes works damn well. It's always fun to get a pizza base and add your own toppings, or even try to make a stew with leftovers from All Of The Above that Shorty mentioned.

Oh, and toasted sandwich makers are good. Ham and cheese and a sauce of choice, or sundried tomatoes, bacon, or bananas and chocolate, or beans... A true crowd pleaser and always a nice, warm and filling snack.

Shorty's list is fairly comprehensive but I'd like to add something. Fajitas - tortilla wraps, chicken breasts, cheese and some salsa/jar of sauce. Left over wraps can then be used as an alternative to sandwiches.

These days I love buying pitta breads and dipping them in humous.

Risotto dude. Easy-cook rice, chicken stock, smoky bacon, peas. Mix that shit up with some shrooms, some spicy sausage, peppers - there's good recipes on the Internet. Make a big pan and fridge it.

Also: Chicken breast, marinaded in whatever (check Internet), in the oven under some foil, slice it up, bistro-style lettuce, dressing, home-made potato wedges. Walla. Or make it into a nice sandwich. I eat a lot of sandwiches. Don't always think This has to go on a plate. Sandwiches are good all day, and especially with good fresh meat inside (and cheese!).

Also: SUBWAY.

I don't know if it's cheap or anything, but I would very often make myself some salad stuff. Buy some lettuce (cut and washed already if you don't feel like doing that yourself), tomatoes, grated carrot and anything else you want in a salad. Then I would add a boiled egg, cause eggs are yummy. Some mashed potatoes and a (veggie) burger and you have yourself a nice meal.

Noodles/ramen/whatever it's called are also cheap, but eat it with vegetables and some kind of meat to make it a more balanced meal.

Oh and I ate tons of microwaveable crêpes and lots of toast. Always good.

If your really hungry and really desperat for food, sage and onion stuffing is your friend. Put some in a cup/bowl and and boiling water. Fills you up if your at the end of a term when money is low.

Cheap Pizza is always good, pasta/bacon/tomatoes/cheese go together in any combination. Stock up on Pasta sauces. Add chillies for taste. Rice is cheap and easy too. Sausages kick ass, but get nice ones, Cumberland or Lincolnshire.

Well, this is helpful to me as I'll be in this situation for the next three years starting the end of this month.

Well I'll throw in one, macaroni cheese!!!! You can make a load at one time and just reheat it when you require! And plus you can throw in a load of things, so there's always a new twist to it when you decide to make it.

Aw damn, I knew I was missing one of my regulars. Yes, Fajitas. Tacos also good. Burritos are easier though because you do them with mince and that's much cheaper and simpler to cook. I have to have a bit of salad in mine, lettuce, cucumber chunks n spring onion.
