Nintendo Switch Successor Announced

Recommended Posts

  • 2 weeks later...

Just got done watching this video...

...in which Bosman brings up Yves Guillemot saying that Nintendo kind of warned Ubisoft that some games are a once-a-generation thing, and in hindsight Ubisoft probably should've held off on releasing Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope until the Switch 2 launch window.

I've been thinking about it a bit lately and this video just reinforced the question internally for me: just how many people are holding things back to announce right now until that potential big blowout Switch 2 event? I can't help but think back to the January 2017 Switch presentation and how things like SMT V and Octopath Traveler were some of the biggest commitments we saw coming out of the show.

Now? Atlus are likely prepping Persona 3 Reload and Metaphor ReFantazio ports for that launch window, but with how Atlus have seemingly turned their backs on PlayStation team-ups for that sweet Game Pass money, it doesn't seem impossible at all to me that something like Persona 6 could be getting announced here now that the series is on everything.

Meanwhile, Square Enix haven't said a peep about the Final Fantasy IX or Tactics remakes which were leaked FOREVER ago in the Nvidia leaks, and while plans change and maybe those projects were even cancelled (I say, knowing full well that IX's 25th anniversary is next year, and I'll be damned if S-E don't do something for it), it's one of those situations where, hey, they're probably waiting for this thing to be announced at this point, right?

I imagine it's similar for Dragon Quest XII, because seeing how poorly the series consistently does over here in the West (to the collective chagrin of literally every single JRPG fan outside of Japan), and how poorly the PS5 and Series X|S are doing in Japan, why wouldn't they just wait until the Switch 2 announcement to pull that trigger?

And speaking of triggers: Chrono Trigger. 30 next year. HD-2D time. Do that thing S-E. I swear to Magus. DO. THAT. THING.

So, outside of Nintendo themselves and straight-up ports, does anyone else have any ideas of other companies or games they feel in their bones are holding back for the announcement of this thing?

I'd seriously hate to be the person needing to liaise with these companies to curate third-party support and potentially be turning so many big names away for a big, January 2017 Switch Presentation sort of event, but you just know that their inbox is packed full after the success of the Switch. It well and truly feels like just about anything is on the table this time around.

The only one I can think of is maybe new Monster Hunter. It's been 4 years since Rise was released. Saying that, Capcom may not want to promote 2 MH games at the same time.

So... as confirmed by the Freak Leak, it looks like Switch 2's codename is indeed "Ounce".

Far from the most elaborate or catchy codename ever in Nintendo's history, I have to say.  But here's a list of the codenames for their previous consoles for reference.

That being said, the console's product code will most likely be OUN-001, so if anything gets leaked with that product code (or a very similar varient), it's likely related to our mystery console.

From looking at that page with all the codenames on, the only link I could come up with, is that if you convert "Ounce" to Grams in terms of weight measurement, it's just over 28g, in that list of projects there are 26 previous codenames, counting everything.

Did Nintendo Alarmo have a codename? If it did, it's not in that list, which would mean that there should be 27, which would make the Ounce the 28th in the list. ::shrug:

That's all I've got... unless it has something to do with weight, and I can't see the console weighing just over 28 Grams... maybe it has something to do with the controllers or the physical media?

Alarmo's codename is almost certainly "Clock", as the product code is CLO-001.

Edit: I doubt that the numbering would line up that nicely... There's lots of other Nintendo hardware products left unaccounted for in this list, such as the many variants of the Game & Watch (including the more modern ones; such as the Club Nintendo G&W Ball from 2010 (HGW-001), the SMB G&W (HXA-001) & the Zelda G&W HXB-001), and the Game Boy Micro (Oxy-001 - probably codename "Oxygen").

It's an imperial measure, which means it is all over the place in terms of what it refers to.

Your daily reminder that the imperial system is shit.

Also just realised let's hope they don't stick with that name because Nintendo Ounce could be shorted to N Ounce and that is dangerously close to something else in British English.

A fair point, it was the first number which came up when I searched "Ounce to Gram" so I went with that.

Then noticed the correlation between the number of codenames and the amount in grams.

It could just as easily be a case of in a meeting, someone at Nintendo stating "Let's call it Ounce" because why not?

The codename "NX" was supposedly chosen just because it sounded cool.

The existence of a "Dutch metric ounce" is hilarious. Like they adopted the metric straight away, but kept calling it "ounce" to appease some old-fashioned folk

Anyway, the name could be referring to "It would be already good if the system better had an ounce of the success that the Switch had" or the "Onça", which is a Brazilian Jaguar. Who knows?

I would've thought that the last thing Nintendo would want to do is tie their prototype's identity to one of the biggest failures in console history, but hey! What do I know :p
