WackerJr Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 Day 30 - Personal Gaming Tradition I guess for me, I always immediately turn subtitles on, since most games with talking have it defaulted to off. I’m still not sure why, since I don’t do this with when watching TV! 😄 2

I’m still not sure why, since I don’t do this with when watching TV! 😄 My reasoning for that is the fact that cutscenes may have important info on what needs to be done next. In a TV show, if you blank on a piece of info that a character says, the story still continues, do that in a game and you may find yourself thinking "Hang on, where do I go now?", which brings the plot to a halt. 1

Nicktendo Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 Haha, @Ronnie that is great stuff. To be honest, I would be perfectly OK with Wind Waker taking the best game of all time N- Europe. Also, we finally have confirmation Banjo-Kazooie > Mario 64. Glad we have finally, after 23 long years, come to our senses. 1 1

Glen-i Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 Great, that'll teach me for not shoehorning Pokémon Mystery Dungeon into something more... 13 minutes ago, Nicktendo said: Also, we finally have confirmation Banjo-Kazooie > Mario 64. Banjo might owe it's existence to Mario 64, but it does it so much better! And I will forever hate the big middle finger FFVIII gave me at the final boss for daring to think that levelling up would actually benefit me. So that sounds right to me as well. 2
RedShell Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 (edited) My final 5... Day 26 - Favourite NPC: Telly Vision from Chibi-Robo! A cute, super helpful and humorous companion, just an all-round great character really. Day 27 - Best boss battle: King Dice from Cuphead. Unbelievably challenging and incredibly creative, the many phases of this battle are a blast! Day 28 - Favourite DLC/expansion: Octo Expansion for Splatoon 2. Enjoyed it way more than the main single player campaign of Splatoon 2. 1980's vibe was the icing on the already delicious cake! Day 29 - Nicest graphics/art style: The Tomorrow Children. Everyone is going on about ray tracing these days for PC and the upcoming next gen platforms, but this game was rocking a form of the rendering tech (and many other great visual features) before it was cool. The end result was something very special indeed, and combined with the fantastic art direction, it made for one hell of a good looking game. Just a shame Sony decided to be absolute arseholes and pull the plug on it. Day 30 - Personal gaming tradition: Super Mario Kart. Surprise! Yeah, I'm pretty sure a year hasn't gone by since the release of this game that I haven't played it, one way or another I always make time for some SMK and will continue to do so for as long as I can. Jonnas Posted August 1, 2020 Posted August 1, 2020 Had a hard time coming online last few days, but I should at least put my gaming tradition here! Now, I don't have a game to replay every Christmas/summer or whatever. Those are busy times, and I might not be in the mood for that sort of thing. I sometimes try to play a spooky game on Halloween, but it's hardly something I actually push myself to do. But as others have mentioned, "keeping track of my backlog" counts, and so I can safely say that posting in the N-Europe Diary Thread is the most consistent gaming tradition I've ever had. I love posting and trading impressions there, and it's a good window into my mental state at the time of finishing a certain game. ... But since I've associated a game with each entry so far... Fire Emblem: Blazing Blade I find myself coming back to this classic time and time again. There's no particular occasion or trigger, I just occasionally feel like replaying it every couple of years or so. Maybe I do Lyn Mode, or Eliwood, or Hector... depends on whatever mood I have. In fact, I was replaying it very recently, just a couple of weeks ago! I decided to do an Iron Man run (Lyn Hard + Hector Hard), that is to say, never reload, always accept whatever decisions you made, and live with the deaths you suffer. I was doing super well, until an enemy one-shot my Dorcas with a 2% critical hit (insert "What happened to Dorcas!?" meme)... and then a random mercenary in that same turn hit Lyn with a 1% crit. Thankfully, I had the foresight to give her an Angelic Robe and she survived with 4 HP. Unfortunately, rules of the Iron Man dictated I couldn't use Dorcas in Hector Hard Mode. This really made that early game hell, depending on Bartre hitting 60-75% attacks just so nobody would die. So hellish that, in Chapter 13x, my Eliwood got hit by 3 different guys I couldn't see in Fog of War (I forgot about the nomads...), and that was the end of my run. If only Dorcas had been there... Tense while it lasted, though. Might try again, but as a raw Eliwood Hard run this time, no Lyn Mode. Will Posted August 2, 2020 Posted August 2, 2020 That’s an awesome write-up, @Ronnie - thanks for putting that together. I wanted to go through mine and see what I would actually put without the hard mode rules of not repeating a game. I didn’t look ahead on any of the themes and there were definitely a couple where I later on thought I had a better use for a game. I also missed a couple which I’ll cover too. Spoiler Earliest Video Game Memory: BBC Micro Opening Section of a Game: Shenmue Local Multiplayer: Goldeneye Favourite Villain: Dr. Robotnik 3D Platformer: Mario Galaxy Most Relaxing Navigation: Wind Waker Favourite Ranged Combat: Halo Best Musical Moment: NiGHTs Scariest Moment: Condemned Credits Sequence: Super Monkey Ball Town or Village: Liberty City Favourite Awful Game: Sonic R Best Open World City Game: GTA Vice City 2D Platformer: Sonic 3 Best Story: Eternal Darkness Most Interesting Collectibles: Sonic Adventure VMU Racing Game: Outrun 2 Mini Game: S&K Sphere Game Melee Combat: Fighters Megamix Saddest Moment: N/A Game that takes you back to your childhood: Super Mario Land Favourite Playable Character: N/A Licensed Video Game: N/A Best Final Mission: N/A Online Multiplayer: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Favourite NPC: Lakitu Best Boss Battle: N/A Favourite DLC: Christmas NiGHTs Nicest Graphics: Feel the Magic Personal Gaming Tradition: Buying Japanese Games Favourite Ranged Combat: Halo While I did enjoy Halo, I don’t think it should have been my pick here. I wanted to pick Goldeneye but had already used it. Now I think about it a bit more I’d probably change this to Metroid Prime. Best Story: Eternal Darkness I really wanted Shenmue here, but I’m not sure if this is a better place than the opening sequence. Overall I think it is, so I changed it. Opening Section of a Game: Shenmue Because of the above I’ve changed this to Ocarina of Time, specifically the introduction to Hyrule Field Saddest Moment: N/A Missed this as I was busy and honestly not sure what to put. I’m still not sure. I would pick the Dad’s death in Shenmue but then I need to change my best story and overall I think it deserves that one more. So I’m going to go with NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams, as I was so sad at how bad it was having waited years for a sequel. Favourite Playable Character: N/A Another one I missed. It has to be Mario Licensed Video Game: N/A Had a few candidates for this. Goldeneye, which I’ve already used. Aladdin which I used to love. In the end I had to pick the most recent Formula 1 game as the series has been my most played games of anything for the past five years or so. Codemasters have done an amazing job with this series, for me it’s just about as perfect as an F1 game could be. Best Final Mission: N/A This one goes to Super Mario Odyssey. The final final mission where you have to use every skill you’ve learnt through the game and have a lack of live meaning you need to be nigh on perfect - some of the best gaming of the generation for me. Best Boss Battle: N/A Still not sure what to put here. There are games that I’ve picked that I think are better than my choice, but I wouldn’t replace them from where there are in the list already. Based on that I’m going with Wizpig from Diddy Kong Racing. Really difficult one on one races and something a bit different from other racing games of the time. Personal Gaming Tradition: Buying Japanese Games I really would prefer this to be Christmas NiGHTs but then changing the DLC section I have this in would be very difficult for me. In the end I’m keeping it as-is but this is by a considerable margin my number 2 choice for the category. Spoiler Earliest Video Game Memory: BBC Micro Opening Section of a Game: Zelda: Ocarina of Time Local Multiplayer: Goldeneye Favourite Villain: Dr. Robotnik 3D Platformer: Mario Galaxy Most Relaxing Navigation: Wind Waker Favourite Ranged Combat: Metroid Prime Best Musical Moment: NiGHTs Scariest Moment: Condemned Credits Sequence: Super Monkey Ball Town or Village: Liberty City Favourite Awful Game: Sonic R Best Open World City Game: GTA Vice City 2D Platformer: Sonic 3 Best Story: Shenmue Most Interesting Collectibles: Sonic Adventure VMU Racing Game: Outrun 2 Mini Game: S&K Sphere Game Melee Combat: Fighters Megamix Saddest Moment: NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams Game that takes you back to your childhood: Super Mario Land Favourite Playable Character: Mario Licensed Video Game: F1 2020 Best Final Mission: Super Mario Odyssey Online Multiplayer: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Favourite NPC: Lakitu Best Boss Battle: Wizpig in Diddy Kong Racing Favourite DLC: Christmas NiGHTs Nicest Graphics: Feel the Magic Personal Gaming Tradition: Buying Japanese Games 5 1
