I never said I want it at the expense of gameplay, nor did I say it need be put first.

It's just that they have such little narrative in their games.

They've crafted wonderful worlds and could well add depth to them and their stories with a little more of a push toward their narrative. Nothing need suffer as a result!

I'll probably get one regardless but I really want them to resolve the 3rd party disaster that was Wii U. It's all well and good promoting gaming on the go but if those games don't include EA et al then all we've got is a Wii U with better range.

What's the bare minimum Nintendo need to do for all of you to be sold on NX?

I know you've already outlined your wishes, @kav82, but I'm interested to see what others think too

Well, I'm stupid and bought a Xbox One. So given my track record they basically just have to release the damn thing and I'll get it sometime.

Nintendo will find a way..

"We've made an HD Remake of Super Mario 64. Exclusively for the iPhone. You control it by tapping the screen. The NX? Well, that's our new off-brand Viagra clone. We recommend using it with the Vitality Sensor, exclusively compatible with Blackberry"

For me, I reckon seeing a couple of games which interest me would be enough to lure me in at a reasonable price point, but obviously I hope for much more than that :heh:

I'm more than happy with the 3DS so a very powerful handheld to follow up the 3DS gets me in. I want a far better launch period than what the 3DS got. First 6 months has to be solid with no droughts. Solid release schedule with 3rd party releases confirmed and it's a winner.

I don't expect every third party to be on board and it doesn't need all of them just a lot more than the Wii U had.

No region lock as I'm expecting the NX to get a ton of Japanese third party support so don't want to miss out on those games.

Emily Rodgers has tweeted she has spoken to third parties regarding NX and will reveal more soon.

I would also like to see this.

Gaming have become a lot diverse over the last 20 years or so. It's not all about gameplay anymore and a strong narrative has become a big thing for a lot of gamers.

Some ask why publishers release stuff like Assassins Creed year after year and why people continue to buy them. Yes, the gameplay does change, with little tweaks added here and there, but a lot of people buy them simply because they are invested in the story and world of the characters. If you stripped away the story then I imagine stuff like Creed wouldn't sell have as well as it has done over the years.

Telltale Games offerings have been some of my favourite gaming experiences of this generation. Playing through Walking Dead, Tales From The Borderlands and even Minecraft Story Mode has been an absolute joy.

Another fantastic experience this generation has been Until Dawn. Again, this is a very heavy narrative game and while the gameplay is pretty basic, just like the TT games, the game left a very lasting and enjoyable impression for those who played it.

People may argue that Nintendo games don't lend themselves very well to story driven experiences. I mean, just look at what happened with Mario Sunshine. I do feel this is just laziness on Nintendo's part, though. If you take a look at something like the original Jak game, Sly Cooper or even Ratchet and Clank, it's very possible to create a fun, cartoony platforming adventure, with characters and story that you care about.

Kid Icarus was a fantastic game that was a step in the right direction. It had great humour, twists and the gameplay remained as it should. I think this is a great example of how a classic Nintendo game could be if they put a little effort into it.

Slightly related, you also have things like Let's Play's kicking about, something which I really do despise, but I can't argue that the masses love it. People would rather watch someone play a game than play it themselves. This shows that many aren't in it for the gameplay but more for just to kick back and watch what's happening.

I think Im already sold if Pikmin 4 and a Pokemon adventure game is incoming in year one, but I will be detracted if:

  • The hardware is clunky and chumbersome, especially if its supposed to be portable
  • BoTW NX features no graphical upgrades or noteworthy benefits over the U version
  • Atleast Capcom and Square are not on-board
  • 1st party sports and racing games remain offline experiences or feature a barebones online with friend codes type stuff

I haven't posted here for aaaaages but it seems like this NX Thread has been here forever.

They need to just announce the fuckin thing already.

At the very least they should announce the reveal date.

I think my minimum/most wanted thing is a decent online infrastructure and system at an OS level on par with MS/Sony's current systems. That includes cross-buying between systems etc. Also having sales and monthly offers etc. I wouldn't be abject to paying for an online service and getting free games/free game pick off VC. Obviously with this - needs to be games offering an online experience too. I reckon Splatwoon would go down a treat within the first 18 months - they gotta also work on the aspect of finding games and friends in that too though.

Next up would be a sensible level of 3rd party support, hopefully from the bigger studios. I'm presuming Nintendo will court 3rd party indies - but they need to work harder at that and get more common/popular titles too. 1st/2nd party wise - they need to innovate some of their titles/franchies/create new IP. I feel a certain level of franchise fatigue due to not enough innovation between titles; hopefully they'll really work to mix up the next rather than milking the NSMB formula or something similar again.

Decent price. I realise it's a hybrid, but you can't quite charge the price of a home console+handheld on a single approach in Nintendo's current situation. Given the dual nature, I think £300 is the highest I'd go but tbh that's still sour in my mouth for Nintendo - maybe £200-250.

Ironically, the large majority of LPs I have watched are of games I've played and beaten. Watching an LP is not just about kicking back and watching what's happening. It's a little hard to explain though.

Thats how it tends to be for me as well. Watching Giant Bomb play 100 hours of Persona 4 was what got me obsessed with that game and made me buy the PS2 version, P4 Golden on the Vita and then go back and play Persona 3 Portable.

Hang on. You watched 100 hours of someone else playing a game? I'm all for Let's Plays, but that's insane.

Thats the thing though, a lot of the time its more the conversations being had over the gameplay than the actual game itself. It's still one of their most popular features they've done.

I tend to dislike watching people play games for any length of time, be it in the same room or online, so to watch anyone play something for over 100 hours sounds insane to me, especially considering how many of your own games you could play in that time :shakehead

Exactly this! I want a unified portable Nintendo system that I can bring with me when I commute to work, and that I can hook up to the TV when I get home (if the missus allows me ;D). If it has Wii U power on the portable screen, then great! And a small boost when docked would be even better.

I love weird japanese games, and I would buy a ton of those if they ended their silly region lock. I really hope they do it this time.

But in short, a unified Nintendo handheld with dock. Then I'll be a happy man.

yeah I find Giantbomb Endurance runs really entertaining. I just watched through their Shenmue playthrough over the past month, i think that comes to 24 hours in total

Metal Gear Scanlon was also fantastic, that must have come to over 100 hours, as they played through Metal Gear Solid 1,2,3,4 and 5

Yeah, it's not just watching them play a game. It's listening to the banter usually, often like a podcast. And often I see things I didn't know about the game in an LP. And sometimes it's just plain fun to hear someone playing a game you love for the first time and getting their reaction. It's stuff that is far less common these days now that we're fairly removed from couch co-op. Often times when "watching" an LP I'm also playing my Vita, 3DS, or Wii U. (Ironically I was inspired to finish Pokemon Y while watching a Lead Green Nuzlocke)

This post sums it up best. I sometimes watch Lets Plays, but I immediately disregard them if they have no commentary and it's a straight rip as that's not the fun element to me, it's the entertainment provided by the player that makes it so much more engrossing.

For example, I really like watching Werster's Pokemon speed runs, but I can't watch it if there's no commentary as it's just not as fun or informative. Hearing the freak outs when shit goes wrong, the explanation of the game mechanics as he abuses the ever loving shit out of it, the banter (and general confrontation) with people in his comments etc

Yeah speaking of speed runs that's why I like the Games Done Quick live streams so much. Sure the skills being shown are impressive but they now usually make sure they have someone else on the couch next to them commentating to explain just what is going on.

More leaks/rumours/nonsense (take your pick):

Highlights:

  • Console is currently set to launch with least 4 titles on deck.
  • Base price point seems to be sitting at $299.99
  • Bundle price is currently sitting at $399.99
  • 1080p and 60fps are being used by the marketing teams in relation to gameplay on to the console portion. I've heard unconfirmed rumblings of 900p for the infamous hybrid part of the device.

"Interact with your game on the go" is pretty intriguing. The phrase suggests that you can only do limited things with games (like the "second screen" app things for the PS3/360 that kind of died off) instead of actually playing them.

If this is the case, it's not a selling point to me. A full hybrid would be though.

Part of me wonders if it may be that some games will see the full game played both on the go and on the dock and other games will have full experience on the dock but a lesser experience on the go (not likely to play the full Just Dance experience on the go, for example).

Sounds just like the VMU idea that the Dreamcast had. The Chao feeding from Sonic Adventure and mini games from Power Stone are good examples of interacting with the main game on the go. You'd play these VMU experiences and then get something in return on the main game.
