ReZourceman Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 Wow this movie was awesome. Very powerful, obviously grotesque in that scene [/i, very cool portrayal of a character in dire straights/straites....questioning himself. Another totally different and sublime effort from Danny Boyle, a treasure of film making. James Franco is amazing in everything, I'm sure most would agree, versatile and likeable. Yeah this movie was definitely awesome. The way it was all edited together...with clever and non-standard elements and an interesting way to tell the story and just what was going through this dudes mind. Highly recommended.
Ganepark32 Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 I've got it on my list of things to see this year and I'll hopefully get a chance to see it next weekend, along with Conviction. Would have seen it today but wanted to see something else (It's Kind of a Funny Story). But yeh, does look good and I've been hearing good things about Franco's acting in it. Only seen him in the Spiderman films but he's looking to be another top Hollywood actor from what I'm hearing of this and Howl (which is out Feb. 25th).
Ashley Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 I was speaking to Jodie earlier and saying I want to see this and she said she wanted to too. I asked her if she knew about the scene that was apparently causing fainting and she said she didn't. Could be interesting. Random recent Franco quote: There are lots of other reasons to be interested in gay characters than wanting myself to go out and have sex with guys. And there are also lots of other aspects about these characters that I’m interested in, in addition to their sexuality. So, in some ways it’s coincidental, in other ways it’s not. I mean, I’ve played a gay man who’s living in the ’60s and ’70s, a gay man who we depicted in the ‘50s, and one being in the ‘20s. And those were all periods when to be gay, at least being gay in public, was much more difficult. Part of what I’m interested in is how these people who were living anti-normative lifestyles contended with opposition. Or, you know what, maybe I’m just gay. Got to love the Franco. And while we're at it: But yes. I want to see this film for Franco. Boyle can go suck a goat udder after Slumdog for all I care.
Guy Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 So keen to read the book of this. I still struggle to watch Franco in anything and not think of Harry Osborne in Spider-man. So lame.
Retro_Link Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 (edited) What is it about and when is it out? Anyone interested in this movie I'd highly recommend to watch this interview with Aron Ralston (the climber whose story it's based on) that was on This Morning this week... http://thismorning.itv.com/thismorning/life/aron-ralstons-127-hours Such an incredible story and I'd really like to see the film at some point! Dan_Dare Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 Very much planning on seeing this. It looks awesome, and who doesn't love the Franco? Easily one of the best male leads in Hollywood.
Beast Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 The film is absolutely amazing. Every single moment of the movie had me drawn in and hooked to the story. I love how the movie has so many messages of hope and what's more important in life as well as preparing for death. I also love how it says "If you think you've got it bad at the moment, it could be worse". But yeah, great movie with a terrific performance from James Franco. If 2011 carry on like this, I can see this being a magnificent year for movies.
ReZourceman Posted January 9, 2011 Author Posted January 9, 2011 Definitely. Barely a week in and we've got an Oscar contender level of quality IMHO.
Ganepark32 Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Empire have a great preview of the films being released this year, although not all obviously, on their site (which is definitely worth a read by the way) and there are definitely a lot of great looking films out in the coming weeks that look like Oscar nominees in many categories, including this with Boyle probably looking to get a Best Director nod and Franco a best actor one. Definitely looking forward to seeing it next weekend. May make it a full on cinema day or something seeing as I want to see Conviction (and It's Kind of a Funny Story again).
Oxigen_Waste Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Definitely. Barely a week in and we've got an Oscar contender level of quality IMHO. It's from 2010, bruv. Can't wait to see it, though.
ReZourceman Posted January 9, 2011 Author Posted January 9, 2011 It's from 2010, bruv. Can't wait to see it, though. Well it was released here in 2011.
Retro_Link Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Have people watched that interview I posted with the climber? It's great to hear the uplifting message he's so keen to deliver behind such an terrible event.
Beast Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Have people watched that interview I posted with the climber? It's great to hear the uplifting message he's so keen to deliver behind such an terrible event. I agree fully. I thought the story and the movie itself was inspirational and I love how he still carries on, he hasn't let the gruesome experience get in the way of his life and his adventures.
Oxigen_Waste Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Well it was released here in 2011. So? It's still from 2010. oO
ReZourceman Posted January 10, 2011 Author Posted January 10, 2011 (edited) So? It's still from 2010. oO I bow to your superior knowledge, o' great one. Seriously....what do you want me to say? The film was probably conceived as an idea way before 2010, so technically isn't it a "2008-2010" film if you're going to be so fussy about it. It came out in 2011 so its a 2011 movie in this country. Have people watched that interview I posted with the climber? It's great to hear the uplifting message he's so keen to deliver behind such an terrible event. I particularly enjoyed The Scoff' calling the film "127 Days" at the end. Thats actually the sequel where he gets stuck again, but zombies come and attack him as well. Edited January 10, 2011 by ReZourceman Automerged Doublepost

It came out in 2011 so its a 2011 movie in this country. What the hell did I do now? You do know I'm not having a go at you, right? All I'm saying is... it's not a 2011 movie, so of course it's weird you class it as such. By that logic, many movies would be next year's for me, since everything here comes out months after it comes out in the states. We'll only get this in March! We're only gonna get Tron next week, too, for example. The thing is, when we're classing things in the "end of the year" awards or whatever, what always "ultimately counts" is year of original release. (It doesn't even matter, does it? )

dan-likes-trees Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Very much planning on seeing this. It looks awesome, and who doesn't love the Franco? Easily one of the best male leads in Hollywood. He's also one of the most annoying people ever. He's apparently doing like 3 degrees alongside his acting, apparently. Then he's also just had a collection of short stories published, good reviews in the paper. PLUS he's going to start directing too, apparently he's set to direct Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian, which is a pretty tough one for a debut! Annoyingly impressive. Anyway. Watched the film. Really really good. The nerve bit mad me wince abit. I love how sexy all of Boyle's films look... the three sections of the screen worked really well, soundtrack was awesome too - Lovely Day was brilliant choice of song. Anyway yeah. Surprised by the lack of chat on this thread! Well worth a watch.
Nolan Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Wow this movie was awesome. Danny Boyle. What else is to be expected? Haven't seen it yet, but I plan to at some point. Though...I didn't know who Franco was until someone mentioned Osbourn....not really that memorable.
Goafer Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 It is indeed a great movie. Utterly hated the radio host bit though. Just made me cringe. I get why it happened, but I just didn't like it. Other than that though, I have only positives about the movie.
Dan_Dare Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Still waiting on this- my local indie is getting it late but I pointedly refuse to see it anywhere else.
Eenuh Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 Bump! Just watched this. I knew what it was going to be about and warned mom beforehand heh. The scene made me go all ahhhhh in my head. I'm not sure I would ever be able to do that, the painnnnn. Anyway, thought it was a good film. Great filming and editing too. Plus it plays a Belgian song ("Ça plane pour moi"), so it's automatically awesome. =P
Dan_Dare Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Just got back from this. Absolutely loved it- blates an awesome film. Franco was just awesome in the lead. Considering that the camera barely leaves him for the duration, it's really quite an amazing performance. The dénouement was...well it was everything you'd expect for a film in which a man hacks his own arm off with a shit pen knife, so there's that. But that only feels like a very small part of a much large picture that captures the character of Aron perfectly and the psychological journey he goes on to reach that moment of sheer willpower. Brilliant. And yes, such a sexy film. Boyle sure knows how to use a camera. I think my favourite parts were how well he captured those flashes of memory and sensation like his ex running her finger over his chest. it was beautifully done.
