I wonder if anyone has done it twice. Ever. I can't even find anyone who's done it once on Youtube...

According to the interview Emasher linked to: It would have to be a pretty big tin.

When you first beat it? You did it more than once? I bow to your hardcoreness! Perhaps the ultimate challenge is to come first without killing off Black Bull at the start. It took me several days, but when I finally nailed that sucker, I was on the biggest high imaginable. Right alongside unlocking the Master levels in Super Monkey Ball.

I'm sorry, but none of that compares to the suspension of disbelief required to accept having crocodiles floating quite happily in a big pool of lava.

See, this is what I don't understand. Metroid and Donkey Kong Country are practically the same game: In both games you control a lifeform, intent on travelling through different environments, encountering enemies and collecting things along the way. I can't even tell which game is which between these screens:

Agreed. I loved reading the Space Pirate Lore in Metroid Prime. It left me wanting to know so much more about them. Their civilisation, their culture, history, motives and ideals. It's probably already described in detail in comics and other media for all I know, but I like the idea of a Metroid game from the perspective of a Space Pirate. Metroid Prime 3 only really gave us a peek at their technology.

Quoted from another thread, but more relevant here: Thanks for the tip, bud. Based on your recommendation (I know you have good taste), I've gone and ordered it. I've got a few RPGs on the go at the moment, so it will be a while before I play it, but I'm quite psyched about it. I'll let you know how I get on.

Yep. It's a fantastic game. I just love light-hearted humorous RPGs (or action RPGs in this case). Which is why I'm glad to see some Skies loving too. I might give DQVIII a try if it fits in that category. I put this off for a while, thinking it would be too difficult, but here goes. Greatest games I've owned: Atari 2600: Berzerk BBC Micro: Repton 3 Speccy: Spellbound Dizzy Game & Watch: Fire! NES: Super Mario Bros. 3 Master System: Shinobi Gameboy: Tetris SNES: Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past Megadrive: Streets of Rage II N64: Goldeneye 007 Playstation: Final Fantasy VII Gameboy Advance: Wario Ware Gamecube: Metroid Prime Playstation2: GTA: Vice City

I love you. Download Landstalker on VC and join the Landstalker VC Completist Clan. Current members: me.

Absolutely. Console launch, Balance Board, WiiWare titles. None of that compares to the moment McPhee bought Metroid Prime 3!
-
Hasn't this largely been true for every generation's leading console?

Marvelous: Assuming the countdown units are seconds (which they aren't, but they're close), then the current value of 719000 equates to just over 8 days to go.

Amen brother.

Rare did have that festive spirit, didn't they? This is going back a bit, but James Pond 2: Robocod had an unforgettable Christmas theme: I also can't avoid associating Christmas gaming with OoT.

I know. I was going for dramatic effect. I love that the game was so hard. There's something to keep nearly everyone coming back for more.

Yep. I was hoping for a Wii version, but you and others have rightly pointed out that this is the definitive version of any futuristic racer and would be very difficult to improve on. I'm not sure motion controls a la Mario Kart would suit it. I completed all of Story Mode on Very Hard (eventually) and unlocked all the character movies. The only thing I had in mind left to do was beat the Staff Ghosts, but I couldn't even get close to beating the first one in Mute City, after hours of trying! I bought the official soundtrack and I listen to it regularly to this day. The character profile music is great and criminally underused, whilst the track music is perfect for heart-stopping adrenaline-filled races. It's in my top three Gamecube games. Simply astounding.

You've read the book, but have you played the (Speccy) game? Er, no. Neither have I.
-
Was that your Ali G impression? A-aye? I know it's sad to quote people on their grammar and spelling, but 'majororally' is going to keep me going all day! All this talk of Mario Galaxy - it makes you wonder what kind of game they would have produced had there been no nunchuk. Perhaps we would have seen something truly revolutionary.

After the Wiimote was unveiled, I think a lot of people speculated that it was the FPS genre that had the greatest potential for growth. There were countless discussions about how the controls would work. The first screenshots of a Wii game were for an FPS (Red Steel). All of this built up quite a bit of hype for FPS games on the Wii. So it's odd IMO that we haven't seen more. I'm glad the Conduit is on its way, but I was hoping there would be many developers like HVS carving out new territory in FPS games. Now that's not entirely true, is it? It's a game with a first person perspective and you can shoot stuff. Therefore it's an FPS. You know, in the same way that Mario 64 is a beat-em-up.

Haha. Got to admire the honesty. '...but our second-rate games are perfect for the Wii'.
-
Speculation. I don't remember a single industry 'expert' predicting ahead of time that Nintendo would be outselling the competition 2:1 this generation. On the other hand, I do remember almost every forum user on the planet decreeing the branding of 'Wii' as Nintendo's ultimate downfall. This is what I love about new consoles. They're packed full of ideas that they think the public will enjoy, but no-one knows for sure how well they're going to sell until they're on a shelf.
-
I wondered that too. Especially as he already had a festive name to begin with. Off-topic, sorry.

At the moment we have - Wii games with good graphics and great controls. - XBOX360 games with great graphics and good controls. What I'd like to see are games with great graphics and great controls. I don't give two flying monkeys which system they're on.
-
Reading the Conduit thread got me thinking that the next generation of consoles should see some AMAZING FPS games. Assuming either Nintendo beef up their next console or Microsoft adopt motion controls, we should get the best of both worlds.
-
Very nicely put. There's the music too. After the intense mechanical and industrial grinding of Magmoor, getting out into the open and hearing the calming plinky-plonk tones really blew me away. One of my most favourite gaming moments of all time. I think MP1 cashed in on the classic Earth/Fire/Ice/Water themes to great effect. Thinking up new environments with the same impact for the sequels, rather than simply recreating the same ones was always going to be difficult.
