Stocka Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 City of God Grabs you at the very first second and never goes downhill from there. It has everything, full of excitement and the fact that it's based on a true story makes it fascinating. Incredible acting, excellently structured and overall one hell of a movie. Without a doubt the greatest crime movie I have ever watched. 9/10

One of the few benefits of being portuguese.
Hellfire Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 It gets even better if you actually understand what they're saying. Half the fun gets lost in the subs. One of the few benefits of being portuguese. True, true. Anyway, The Prestige Sublime movie, great acting from everyone, great direcing, great story, simply jaw dropping.
Cube Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 Casino Royale Great film, If any film series needed "reinventing" (bar Star Trek), it was James Bond. The formula was starting to get stale, the changes made for this one was fantastic. The acting was superb, too, and the plot was great. A lot of stand-out scenes, and I loved the way the story still continues after I thought it had finished. My only complaints are: The quality of the image. Nothing to do with the film itself, but the cinema showed really bad flickering in placed (I'm surprised it isn't all digital yet), although I'm used to the crystal-clear image on my projector at home, so I may of noticed it more than others. Other thing is the products used in the film, some seemingly ridiculous (MI6 using Sony laptops running Windows Vista....WTF?, and security storing all their data on blu-ray...seems way too early for that sort of thing). But then, not that many people would actually notice those things... Overall, 9.6/10 Pirates of the Caribbean 2 Lots of fun, if any trilogy-part 2 (from a film that wasn't originally meant to be part of a trilogy) deserves the "better than original" status, it's this one. Plot was actually good, and tied in well to the first one. The fight/escape scenes were fantastic (kebab Jack and waterwheel fighting). It seemed to end abruptly, but just makes me want to see the third one. 9/10 Chronicles of Narnia TBH, I wasn't expecting much. As a "kids book turned into film" I kind-of dismissed it. Got round to watching it (Sky Movies 9 HD on a projector), and loved it. The CGI is fantastic (especially the animals) and the story is fantastic. From what I had heard about it, I didn't expect a great battle scene, either. 8.7/10
Dan_Dare Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 I thought POTC 2 was a bit overlong and generally self indulgent. I don't really think it was franchise material in the mould of these post LOTR epics hollywood loves. If it were shorter/ had less orlando and Keira bollocks, it would have been better. watched Memento last night, and was pleased to see I was right about it the first time: the structure is narrative and directorial genius, the performance of Guy Pearce as Leonard is utterly brilliant. It's dark, twisted, original and darkly funny with a hell of a twist at the end that really hits you between the eyes with its implications. 10.
ipaul Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Jerry Maguire. Intresting film with a different plot, good script and very good acting by Cuba Gooding JR i thought. Definately one of the better films ive seen i thought, possibly now one of my favourites. 9/10
AshMat Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Night at the Museum Ben Stiller goodness. Corny in places, but an overall good movie. 7/10
Guest Stefkov Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Blast From the Past Brendan Fraser pretty good acting. Alicia Silverstone, pretty hot. overall 6/10
gaggle64 Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Goodf ol' Arnie: Kindergarden Cop "Are these your lunches? You mean you eat other people's lunches? STOP IT!" 7/10 True Lies [while launching a Harrier missile] "You're fired!" 8/10
Jimmy3000 Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Jackass The Movie 2: Its not goin to win any awards but its still very funny and a great watch. Some of the stuff is a bit sick but there are a lot of great stunts with decent props etc. If you like the first give it a watch, will have you laughing much more than than most comedy movies. 8/10 The terminal: Great film and a great performance by Tom Hanks, a foreigner who gets trapped in an airport after his home contry goes into civil war, some funny parts and apparently based on a true story. 9/10 Against the ropes: Crap boxing film starring meg ryan, terrible plot, the fights look pathetic and cheese drips off your tv whilst watching... just watch rocky. 2/10
Jimbob Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 True Lies One of Arnies best action films. Best bit of the film is when he launches the bad guy on a missle from a harrier jet with the words "You're Fired". 9/10
Monopolyman Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Life of Brian- 9/10 Amazingly the first time I've seen this, but I was not disappointed, even though I seen parts of it before. The Godfather pt.II- 9/10 One of my favourite movies of all time. Gets better every time. Memento- 7/10 I think this is the third time I saw this now, and I loved it the first time, but after you get over the original narrative and the ending, it doesn't seem that good. Annie Hall- 8/10 I didn't think I'd like this film, but I did. It's unique structure and fast pacing really brings you into the film, which itself is pretty heart-warming stuff, and the witamnages to up-hold well after 30 years. Good film.
gmac Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Be Cool after the panning it got from critics I didn't expect much, but I quite enjoyed it, quite funny in places 7/10
Daft Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Just got draged to see Perfume: The Story of a Murderer...I was pretty good till it got to the end...then it sucked big time! Still, lots of naked people!
killthenet Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Daft: That might well be the most insightful review i've ever read.
ThePigMarcher Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Girl , Interrupted A little bit like Shawshank , but with females and set in a mental institution (so nothing like Shawshank then). Despite being a little slow in places , I thought it was a well written and enjoyable story , how much of it is really based on a true story is questionable though. The main positive were the steller performances by Angelina Jolie (incredible), Winona Ryder and Brittany Murphy and ensured that I stayed with it even during the slower moments. Not one for action or light heartedness but definately one I was surprised by and would easily watch it again. 9/10
Daft Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Daft: That might well be the most insightful review i've ever read. What can I say, I tried!

Zygo Ape Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Gladiator - Watched this new years day, first time ive watched the film. Its honestly one of the best films ive seen, the acting was superb (Joaquin Phoenix plays such a compelling character) and the battles are very well done, and you honesty wont find a better collection of one-liners in any other film. The only gripe i have with the film is the locales in which the film is set, it doesnt feel very epic, i mean some of the most important parts of the film in terms of story telling were set in dimly lit rooms or dungeons, and its kindof hard to focus when the locales are so bland, i mean youve got the whole of ancient rome to play with, and the only thing they could be arsed putting any CGI work into was the Colloseum. Other than that, excellent. 9/10 Reservoir dogs - Seen this so many times, can even begin the point out any faults. Love the opening scene, love the storyline and how its composed. Just a shame its a bit short. 10/10
Dan_Dare Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 I think Dogs is all the better for being a short movie. Pulp Fiction feels bloated and excessive by comparison.
Hellfire Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 51st State. Hilarious and sick.Samuel in a kilt = lol Making a drug that makes people shit themselves eratically = lol. 2 lol's make a lmao. 9/10. Man that movie is jawesome.
Daft Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Just saw Mel Gibson's Apocalypto (Yes, apparently its his and nobody elses...) and it....rocked! Its great! People get beat up, heads get removed and testicles eaten! (Not joking, at the beginning...animal testicles!) I might have been made better by the fact I thought it was going to ba a load wonkey donkey crap! 9/10
