We all have those "friends" on Facebook who post everything about their boring relationship, insist that you hear about every bowel movement their vile offspring has or share links to quasi-provocative, racism invoking bullshit stories about how a taxi driver wouldn't turn down his music for a Muslim passenger.

This really annoyed me

People feeling somebody has a sense of entitlement just because they/their relative is disabled. Now I think Ed Sheeran is as much of a twat as anyone, but he shouldn't be forced to give a private audience to a fan just because he has a disability. And all the comments on it, amazingly are all vilifying him.

Other things that made me sick are the "1 Like = 1 Prayer" bollocks and those stupid quotes on a shitty background, about how a real man wouldn't do...whatever. Usually posted by fat single girls.

So, what things really annoy you that get posted on social media? Feel free to post links but obviously, only links that have been shared as "public" on Facebook, no screengrabs.

I love Ed Sheeran, I don't think he's a twat but yeah, people like this irritate the shite out of me. It's a shame that a relative has a disability and it's truly horrific but don't be pushing shit on people. I think it's ridiculous. I bet there's people dying of cancer, some illness, has a disability or whatever, who would love to meet Ed Sheeran. If he was to meet someone everyday, then he wouldn't be able to do any live shows, record any songs or whatever. I know it sounds really horrible but if someone says no, they should just say "Okay" or even if they make a Facebook thing, don't bully him and make him out to be a villain. It's disgusting that she's done that, really.

The thing that fucks me right off is when 'lads' post how they're all about the pussy and whatever and really, they're 14 year old virgins, still wanking eight times a day. Nothing wrong in that but stop pretending to be something you're not.

Girls who post things like "I was going to say something but I won't" and you're like "Then why say that? OBVIOUSLY, you're an attention whore!". The same can be applied to those who say "Some people are just twats" or the like. Either grow a pair of balls or tits and say who you're talking about or put up and shut the Hell up!

Retweet THAT, bitch! haha.

I use Facebook the same way I use an online forum, and I'm kind of glad I use it that way. Before I post anything, I ask myself: Is what I'm about to post informative, entertaining, or funny on any level? If it doesn't contain at least one of those things, then I won't post it.

Over the years I've noticed that websites like Facebook and Twitter have evolved in... how do I put this? "Reactionary" ways?

What I mean by this is that both websites were designed to do specific things, and when the user-base started using them in ways that weren't otherwise intended, their designs, features, and even the "culture" behind these websites began to shift according to user input. This sounds totally natural, but I don't think it's necessarily an evolution for the better.

At least, that's how I've perceived it, seeing as every individual's experiences with these websites is extremely personalized (that's how they're designed, after all). But I think the commonalities revolving the end-user experience with these sites change drastically from culture to culture around the world.

When I first joined Facebook in 2007 I remember I used it the same way I had used MySpace up to that point, which to me was "just another message board, but more personalized." What separated my use of these websites from the rest of the people I know who just began using social media was that I was very well accustomed to online forums and just went around using it the way I would normally use one: read things, drop a comment here or there, send a PM to someone regarding something even if you don't know them that well... pretty much standard behavior you don't really think about when you're on a board such as this.

Apply it to Facebook however, and somehow you get a completely different experience. I remember back then the website was very open and the entire idea of maintaining the privacy of your photos, friends list, hell, even the number of friends you have, was practically non-existent. The very option of keeping everything you post limited to just your friends was a rarity for me (again, being in the Middle East your experience may vary). The unwritten rule of "don't befriend people you barely know, always keep your profile pictures private" was yet to exist. It felt like it was designed to be similar to an online forum, but with you only being able to see posts from people you added as your friends. You were still free to go around exploring other people's posts via interest groups and whatnot. Come to think of it, this behavior was actually encouraged.

Nowadays I have to think twice before I post a single comment on something I see on my news feed, because there is an unwritten rule that considers it to be "creepy" to comment on something a friend of yours posted if said friend is someone you haven't talked to in a long time, or is someone you don't know all that well, but is on your friends list for 'practical' reasons (a co-worker who fills you in on things, a member of the sports team you play on, a contact you might need for future projects--more on that later). I doubt this rule is exclusive to the Middle East, but its one I find extremely perplexing. When I said sites like Facebook evolved around the way their users interacted with it, this is what I meant. The site was okay at first, but due to the way people usually trash things once they become popular, they eventually perverted the experience for me.

There was this one time I saw a friend I haven't talked to in a while post some bullshit I can't remember, and I wrote a short comment chiming in with a link to a Snopes article debunking what she had written. The reply I got was a childish variation of "nobody asked for your opinion." Well then why the fuck are you posting in the first place, if not to invite people on your friends list to respond? I thought this was just a case of that one person acting like a little shit, but 800 friends later and I'm convinced it genuinely isn't.

You don't really think about this shit when you're on a forum, and I think that was what killed Facebook for me. I check Facebook on a daily basis since my job pretty much depends on knowing what people are talking about now, but I very rarely actually USE the site or post anything. And over the years I've grown very thankful for not using it the way everyone else I know does. I see very infuriatingly stupid things on a daily basis, and it has done nothing but fuel my frustration for a better world. A better everything, really. I think Facebook can amplify the worst qualities in all of us.

Another example of users using the website in ways it wasn't designed is the fan pages feature. Remember when Facebook groups were the norm? Does anybody still use them anymore? I remember back then they were made as a parallel to Myspace's interest boards where people can gather to discuss interests. But then things started getting commercialized and people started making the wrong jump to creating fan pages rather than groups, and that's where the shit really hit the fan for me.

As I understand it, fan pages are made for businesses or brands to interact with their customers, and are not the space for people to discuss topics or coordinate activities. At least that's how it started out... until people started creating pages for random shit like "house music lovers !!" or "I'll step out of my way to put my foot over a particularly crunchy leaf." They weren't even pages that posted anything worthwhile. They were just treated as "badges" the majority of vapid people put on their profiles, like how much they enjoy "having fun." I remember going to any random friend's profile and looking at their information to find a shitload of fan pages they're subscribed to, but pay little to no attention to. Eventually Facebook caught on to this and realized their implementation of the feature had failed, forcing them to remove them from profiles altogether unless they are a legitimate interest like a popular hobby or TV show. In the meantime, everyone forgot to use groups again.

There's these two popular fan pages with millions of subscribers that do nothing but post localized memes all day. The first is called "Egypt's Sarcasm Society" and the other is called "Asa7be Sarcasm Society." Ironically, none of these pages seem to know what the word sarcasm means, because it sure as shit isn't about posting Yao Ming memes in Arabic all day long. What pisses me off even more is that this "Sarcasm Society" thing caught on, and you have copy-cat pages mimicking the naming scheme: Faculty of Engineering Sarcasm Society, Piss Drinkers Sarcasm Society, Muslim Brotherhood Sarcasm Society, Football Sarcasm Society. It's a fucking epidemic. And of all those pages, the people who run ESS and ASS are the ones making tons of money publishing sponsored comics and "licensing" already public-domain images/memes they don't own the rights to like Yao Ming and Trollface to be used in outdoor and television ads. It's annoying enough to not be able to escape these unfunny rage comics on the internet. It's a whole thing altogether when you see Vodafone displaying a variation of trollface on a giant billboard--or worse, on your television.

I've worked with an admin of one of those pages, and he's a pretty good scriptwriter. I just hate the fact that his success came out of cheap cookie-cutter bullshit, because that's exactly the type of thing plaguing all forms of media. There's this one fan page I remember that is particularly notorious for being one of the bull-shittiest pages I've ever seen, and its full translated name was, I shit you not, "1,000,000 fans against Mohammed Elbaradei press like to show how much you hate him what are you waiting for." And in case you're wondering, the page exceeded a million fans.

Other people's god damn kids. I don't care that little Harry played his hardest at football club this week or that little Susie had a minor role in the school play. I went out and earned a living, where's my fucking medal?

It's even worse with babies. Here's a potato faced wretch looking vacant in their first hat. Here they are again looking vacant with a teddy. Here they are looking vacant whilst drenched in their own vomit. All apparently "adorable lol xxx"

I too get fed up with the constant barrage of crap about their kids. We get it, you have a family like most people on the planet.

Then there's the whole passive aggressive statuses some people right, or posts that are cryptic saying something is wrong, and if someone asks what's up they then say they don't want to talk about it.

A recent trend though is people sharing these ridiculously wrong articles and believing it true. Ebola a hoax, Ebola victim rising from the dead etc. I caught my sister doing that yesterday and just...urgh...disowning her.

I don't get why any of you keep people on your friends list, or at the very least mute them if a defriend would be a social faux pas amongst an IRL social group, if they annoy you like this.

When I signed up to Facebook, it was a way to make friends with the people on your University course. You literally couldn't sign up without putting in a Uni/college. It's #1 feature was, for everyone I knew, photo tagging, which was revolutionary. So inherently it was only good at helping you stay in touch with people you actually knew. And I've kept it that way, with the exception of a few KNEE-ers, and as a result, don't get any of that melodramatic FB bullshit everyone complains about.

You are not your friend list count. Time for a cull!

Moreso, 3D ultrasound images of a girl's unborn child. I found that disgusting. I had a relative using the image has her profile picture. It's an undeveloped fetus for god's sake!

People whom post "competitions" on facebook, that annoys me beyond. I won't unfriend them because i'm pretty good friends with them, so i unfollow them and block any competitions i see crop up.

I care. I don't get to see my niblings often, so the constant updates about them on Facebook are great. It's a big of a shame that the "who do you want to see this?" feature doesn't seem to be as well done as Google+. Actually, most people don't know it exists while G+ makes it quite obvious and makes you think about who would want to see your posts (as well as being much better for sorting people into groups as well).

My biggest problem with Facebook is actually the website itself. The chronological order is absolutely broken. Comments and likes will bump stuff back up to the top and it randomly reverts back to "Top Stories".

Tbh I kinda agree with her that Ed Sheeran is a cunt but that's because it took me about 40 minutes to make a 5 minute journey out of the dome because of all the mugs that were there for his concert whilst all I wanted to do was go to the cinema(had no idea he was playing until the parking guy was very adamant on finding out where I was going, because if it was to the gig I would have to pay £30 to park!).

Seriously. Really hated Ed Sheeran for a bit on Tuesday. Enough of that though - the original poster of the facebookery shenanigans is an over-entitled prick and such shit wouldn't even really exist were it not for facebook - why should anybody pander to your disabled(or whatever's PC these days) son/daughter/child? Why should you have a right to be upset when they don't? Don't get me wrong, I definitely everyone deserves the same basic human respect but Ed Sheeran wasn't being a cunt to the kid or anything so like...get over yourself. I'm sure there's hundreds, thousands, tens of etc in the same situation not being a little bitch about it.

End of the day though - as Shorty and Moogle say - why keep these people on your facebook if they annoy you? Unfriend them or at least just hide their shit from your feed! I don't tend to unfriend, probably because most of mine are awesome, but I do occasionally get fed up and hide people. Then I accidentally forget I'm 'friends' with them/that they exist until a post from them spontaneously reappears many many months later.

My aunt's husband is an awful human being and I only keep him around due to family stuff (and to build evidence of how he's claiming benefits he's not entitled to . The other day he liked something which basically said "you can't wear a bike helmet in a shop but you can wear a burka when in terms of security they're the same ". Yeah... They're really not. One is protection and the other is cloth.

So I guess I dislike bigots?

Posted (edited)

I've unfollowed so many people in the last two weeks, unliked a bunch of shit pages from years ago and liked a bunch of new ones that are relevent to my interests and Facebook is a lot more enjoyable again now.

Though some of the stuff that really does piss me off:

Animal Abuse pictures being shared to 'raise awareness'. I don't want to see a half burnt dog first thing in the morning and yes, it is terrible but sharing a post on facebook is going to do fuck all, there are plenty of other things you could do to actually make a difference, a start would be donating to a decent animal charity, something that would be worthwhile thing sharing as well.

Casual Racism: I see SO much of this (or I did until my recent cull), and it was mainly from idiots from school who I don't know why I accepted anyway or old co-workers over the age of 40. I'd always see stupid comments about how 'we shouldn't let any of them in' or how 'Britain is only for the British' but I guess that's what you can expect when you have friends from a failing school and worked in one of the countries shittest stores.

The 'Like' feature pisses me off too. I don't mind likes in themselves, I'm always liking stuff, but then one day I realised it can just pop up on any of your friends' facebook walls as a big post saying 'Josh liked this' and show the post. I mean, I liked it so the person posting the content had my like and would be encouraged to post more, not so everyone in my timeline has to see the shit I like. If I wanted to do that I would share it. Alas, I don't like pictures from the Yamamoto Yusuke appreciation page as much now :p

The problem I see with liking things on Facebook is that it promotes the idea that the validation of others on a certain piece of content is equivalent to it being credible in some form. In a comment/forum debate, you're more likely to find a comment with 260 "approvals/likes" far more credible than a comment with 26 likes. It has nothing to do with the content, and everything to do with the herd. Your opinion on a particular statement is going to be highly influenced by its perceived social value. When you have a voting system for everything (likes/shares/comments) it essentially adds an element of "social proof" to nearly everything you publish. Take the herd mentality of most people and multiply that with the average internet user's attention span, and what you get is people "liking" (or "sharing") things based on their perceived value (via social proof) instead of substance. I like to think that by taking that away you'll force people to at least attempt thinking for themselves.

I remember that, you had to have an academic email address to register. Good times.

Something I'm seeing a lot of is some page called Britain First. There's hundreds of similar pages, essentially it's misinformed racism that appeals to the masses of numbskulls that use facebook who take everything at face value without researching or attemping to find out more.

Thankfully, the only one of those I see is "Britain Furst”, which takes the mickey out of those and point out then they do incredibly dumb or racist stuff.,

I remember when facebook was happening I couldn't even sign up - as you had to have an educational/uni e-mail address and for some reason Goldsmiths just wasn't frickin recognised as being a university(which I found strange, considering it falls into the University of London banner). I rememebr when the masses started coming, and that was when some of the shit started appearing too -.-

There are one or two people on my list who are already talking about Christmas.

One of my friends has dressed up his kid in a Christmas onesie. He also has had a Christmas countdown outside of his classroom for the past two weeks.

Absolutely pissening.
