IIRC, Metroid Prime was pants at first. Nintendo cancelled three other games so Retro could focus on making Metroid Prime good.

You're almost spot on. Except it was just Miyamoto. And it only took a day.

Development continued on track following its announcement, but Retro Studios was about to be rattled by a series of events with big ramifications. In July, Miyamoto would pay them his second visit of the year to review their work and deliver the cutthroat brand of guidance his name was built upon. Within the first 24 hours, he had went over prototype builds for Raven Blade, Retro Football and Thunder Rally, before promptly cancelling all of them. Unsatisfied with the way they were going, the producer had workers from each reshuffled into Prime, while 20 or so (mainly from the TR team) were let go.

There's actually a lot of interesting stuff there about Metroid Prime, worth checking out.

Here's some bosses that were cut.

Not gonna lie, I really like their idea for Kraid's spikes, makes more sense than Super Metroid's. Looks super cool as well.

I know of this but it was already good when it got announced.

I'm not so sure of that...

Seriously, what is up with that Arm Cannon? Looks positively pants.

Really? All the hands on impressions I've heard is the Federation Force is actually quite fun?

One of those games where I had to be politely fake enthusiastic after playing it (not that the hired help really care but still). Just dull to play. Granted it was a small part of the final product, but certainly didn't sell it to me.

The more recent build seems to be faring a lot better in terms of gameplay. The visuals are still shaping opinion however.

I have never played a Star Fox game, so for me this game looks quite nice.

I am not sure about the gameplay, but when it comes to the visuals I can't really complain and because I like sci-fi games, I will probably get this game at some point (one reason I finish most games without 100% completion is that I want to play a lot of Wii U games and just don't have time to finish them 100% as I have started quite late).

I remember a bit but I don't recall much. It wasn't anywhere near like the Wind Waker backlash from what I remember.

Anyhoo, back to Starfox... it just doesn't look fun enough. It should be fast-paced, twitchy, with constant action. Gamepad aiming isn't suited to this type of game, it loses the essence of what makes it Starfox!

I actually think it COULD have worked well, but only as an option. I think the regular fast conventional Arwings should be available, with the gamepad displaying information, while a slower vehicle that can shoot all over but travels slower could have been an option either for co-op or in online missions where star fox team have to escort a bomber which has to deliver an experimental weapon into the heart of Andross's base. Although now I think of it maybe that wouldn't be quite so well received in Japan. But having bombers as a class option would be cool... and tbh I REALLY hope it still is cool.

Who's to say this won't be it, just not as drastic.

As Ashley pointed out, if it isn't a drastic change then it's not a Metroid Prime moment.

Metroid Prime got so much ire and hate when it was revealed, since it was different (reminds me of the Federation Force backlash actually), but turned out to be great

So you're comparing the hate that a game got for being different to the hate a game is getting for being the same (well same-ish but suspiciously worse looking)? What are you trying to say with that comparison? I genuinely don't know what you're getting at.

But that's the thing, most of the hate is because it IS different, that's more what I'm seeing, people just want a new Star Fox 64/Star Wing; but they're trying something different no one wants.

If Starfox had had 20 entries then I would probably be clamouring for change. But I only ever played Star Wing and Lylat Wars so I don't really need anything different atm.

Yep. How I feel, I don't think I've had enough of that type of gameplay, I want more. Feel the same about f zero, wave race, excite bike. Don't try and be clever, just give us new versions, exact.y the same format if need be.

To be Honest, I'd take hd online remasters of all three of them.

I went with Zero and Guard separately. I want Guard as a download so I went the other way. £3 extra but meh

I don't know why you'd pay more to have guard as a download but it's nice to have options, First Print and the T-Shirt - which doesn't look *that bad surely? - for me. : peace:

Although on reflection, I'd have been happier if the shirt was like the hat with its design... or just the hat instead, oh well, don't need the amiibo, not paying £80, simple as that. :p

OK, maybe it does....

I just don't see myself playing Guard often if I have it on disc because I'm ridiculously lazy and cba to change discs.

I should go download only but meh, effort plus we get games early when physical :p
