New King's Story

Little King's Story, the 2009 Wii title that was a critical hit but a financial flop for its developers, is getting what seems at first glance to be a very unlikely resurrection.

This week's spate of Famitsu Tokyo Game Show previews includes the first word on a PS Vita title called (in translation) New King's Story: The King, the Dark Lord, and the Seven Princesses -- basically, a remake of the original game.

As before, you play young King Corobo as he attempts to build up a kingdom practically from scratch. As you do things like go treasure-hunting and slay enemies, you gradually get more people to join you, building houses and helping you expand the scope and riches of your domain. It's a unique concept that scored big with critics in 2009, but the original Wii game sold well below expectations, contributing to the March 2010 closure of original developer Cing.

What's new with the Vita King's Story? The graphics, for one. The original Wii title was cutesy and cartoon-like all throughout, but this re-imagining gives Corobo and his kingdom a more realistic, anime adventure-like feel. The story's been greatly revised, too, and the game will be fully compatible with the Vita's touch controls.

There's no release date yet for the title, which will be shown at Konami's booth at the Tokyo Game Show next month.

I think it looks great, don't mind the change in visual style at all.

Yeah, it's annoying when games series switch platforms but it happens. Kingdom Hearts is one of my favourite series but to experience the full story of that you have to have had a PS2, GBA, PSP, DS and soon to be 3DS. Crazy!

It'd be nice if the original creators coulda been making some money out of this, alas they won't now. The original truly is/was a proper gem of a game, one of the better yet overlooked titles of the entire generation even, and perfectly at home on a Nintendo console. It won't affect me as I'll never own a Vita, but remake or whatnot, the graphic style will appeal to some, but not be as good as the original's.

If the original developers get some money out of this then I'll buy it regardless of how it compares to the original.

I shouldn't imagine that very likely since Cing declared bankruptcy about a year back. I imagine some other company bought all rights to this as an asset.

Apparently, they're not even bothering with keeping with the previous characters' importance, they'll just replace and add wherever they feel like it. I'm guessing Princess Spumoni will be replaced.

You could be talking about Japanese games in general.

It's one thing to do it with an original work, it's another to do it to a pre-existing work :( It's just not cool.

Also, the new Jumbo Champloon doesn't even look that bad. The thing that seems to be replacing Duvroc, on the other hand...

God, I hope this game bombs. Hard.

What do you have to gain from that, exactly?

I'm not one to hope a game to fail... But I really don't want this "franchise reboot" to take off. If it sells well, this is the direction the series takes from now on. If it doesn't, it will, at the very least, send the message that this sort of makeover doesn't work, and that the original will be remembered for what it was, not for the new series that it spawned.

Of course, there's the possibility that it might bring more attention to the original than itself, which would be positive, just not very likely.

Cing is no more and the original game was a flop; these events might not be entirely unrelated. The only reason this version exists is because Konami made the approach and licensed the IP, Marvelous weren't even shopping it around. If you don't like the look of the series' future then that's fair enough, but without this game there wasn't one in the first place.

No matter what additions and changes Konami make to this title, the Wii game remains the same. If you'd like to see more games like it then this is your best shot, and if it's not to your liking you can simply opt to ignore where they take things; you aren't losing anything.
