nekunando Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 I actually played Mario Kart: Super Circuit last night briefly and I'm actually looking forward to having it on my 3DS aswell now It'll be good to play it through again from scratch as I don't particularly want to erase my save data on the GBA cartridge.. I do have a complaint, though, which I also felt back when it was released.. the handling I'm sure I'll maybe get used to it but it doesn't feel tight enough to me which makes cornering and collecting coins somewhat difficult. The game does, however, have the fantastic Bowser Castle 3 track Anyway, this thread and the talk of the GBA games coming to 3DS has inspired me to delve into DK: King of Swing and I'm actually really enjoying it It's great to hear some classic music, too
S.C.G Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 Why the lack of love for Mario Kart : Super Circuit? am I the only one who thought that going back to Mode 7 graphics was an excellent choice because it suited the system well... all of the Karts, backdrops etc were all beautifully detailed too. I understand that Mario Kart 64 has the more 'exciting' track design due to the fact you have bumps, curves, slopes etc on the tracks but keeping them flat on the GBA worked, just like it did on the SNES... I feel that Super Circuit had its fair share of decent tracks too, granted not all of them were classics but it certainly had a lot of them plus it had all the SNES tracks too so to me it felt like a portable Super Mario Kart which is why I don't get why more people don't admit to liking it. Personally I'd rather play Super Circuit then Double Dash so it's by no means the worst... :p I actually played Mario Kart: Super Circuit last night briefly and I'm actually looking forward to having it on my 3DS aswell now It'll be good to play it through again from scratch as I don't particularly want to erase my save data on the GBA cartridge.. My favourite tracks would have to be the Bowser's Castle tracks plus Cheep Cheep Beach and the sublime Sky Garden which had it all for me, nice visuals on the clouds with the vines - not to mention the blimp in the background! - the music was excellent oh and there was a cheeky shortcut you could take by hopping over the clouds.

I remember thinking Rainbow Road was pretty insane considering there were jump strips all the way around the edges of the track.. fantastic shortcut potential, but also highly threatening The tracks in general, though, haven't really stuck with me as I can't really remember the layout of very many of them The fact that it was raining on Luigi Circuit seemed awesome to me at the time, though
Coolness Bears Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 Put me in the Mario Kart Super Circuit is awesome box. I prefer it to N64 for version which I still enjoy but if you play it now it feels a bit bland just in its design. Where as Super Circuit still looks sweeeeeeeeeeet.
RedShell Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 I loved the GBA, in fact it's home to some of my favourite games ever! The thing is though, you really needed to follow the import scene to get the very best out of the system. Also (as has been pointed out already) the screen wasn't up to much, but that was sorted with the SP/Micro. Other than that it was like having a SNES in the palm of your hand! And the GCN link-up feature was genius. Mario Kart Super Circuit was just awesome, but I really love the fact there were 3 F-Zero games! With F-Zero Climax being the best of the lot (such a shame it never made it out of Japan): Track Editor kept me busy on that for ages! Still play it occasionally. Then there's WarioWare, which I simply adore. The first game was superb, still play this one every so often too: And Twisted was just as good, if not better. But again, unless you imported it, you missed out on a GBA classic. Just when I thought things couldn't get any better on the GBA... Along came Rhythm Tengoku : Another phenomenal game, and together with the original WarioWare (it's just too close between these two to split them ) my favourite GBA game. Then there's all the GCN link-up stuff, like I mentioned before. Animal Crossing made excellent use of that feature, with Animal Island, the pattern designer application, NES games... on the go! It was amazing. Mario Golf let you take your GBA character over to the GCN game. A feature that was unfortunately striped from Mario Power Tennis, but that was another great sport/RPG game regardless. The Tingle Tuner on Wind Waker, loved that. Pokémon Colosseum/Box, both made simple use of GBA link-up, but it was still great. Then you've got Zelda Four Swords Adventures, which was such a great laugh: And Pac Man VS, which is such a multi-player gem: Soooooo much fun! I was really disappointed that the HomeConsole-Handheld link thing wasn't really expanded with DS-Wii, because it's such a great gameplay device. But it's pretty clear that the Wii U is going to take the idea to a whole new level, so I can't wait for that. And it could all be thanks to the GBA! : peace:
Coolness Bears Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 Did anyone enjoy? I thought it was a funnn little game.
Cube Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 The Tingle Tuner on Wind Waker, loved that. That was great. When my sister wanted to play a game I had to pick something we could both play. So I gave her the Tingle Tuner.
Rummy Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 A portable SNES, a good description. Loved the GBA, handheld gaming always a handy part of reporoire for numerous family based trips etc. Back then my sister was doing most of the buying, though. Now between us we've got 2 SPs(pink and GOLD!), a black original somewhere, and I also later bought a Micro tho well towards the end of life/maybe after. Haven't read much of the thread, but I actually found Super Circuit quite good and compelling. At the time, and still slightly now, I was annoyed at Nintendo for their constant incremental upgrades(the SP being one) and remakes of old games, but looking back I did definitely enjoy what they did with the marios etc.
Sméagol Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 (edited) For someone who went to so much trouble to get his first GBA (imported from Japan, but through a friend who bought it for me there and brought it with her), and imported a second GBA because I just had to have it (but the micro famicom is just that sexy), I own shockingly few games for it. The list contains: - Golden sun 1 (JP) (my first game for it) - Golden Sun 1 (EU) - Golden Sun 2 - Metroid Fusion (in fact the first Metroid game I owned) - Metroid Zero Mission - Banjo Kazooie: Grunty’s revenge - Zelda Minish cap - The Castlevania 2 in 1 - Drill Dozer (JP) (last game I bought) - Zelda oracle of ages (yes, GBC, but as the GBA was my first actual GB, this is what I played it on) And well, Tales of Phantasia (US I believe) but who cares about that. Apart from that, I own both the Nintendo MP3 player and the Play-Yan Micro. More for collection purposes, but the MP3 player actually got some use in that time. Oh, and I got the GameCube GBA player, also bought purely for collection purposes.. A store was selling some old stock of it for € 10,- so I just took one. So.. 9 games, and 3 dedicated devices to play them on (plus my DS lite) . When I don’t have any other priorities, I’ll see if I can catch up and get some other great GBA and GBC games (like Shantae for ƒ 400,- or something). At least the games I had for it (apart from Phantasia) are all fucking great. Edit: Oh and as for the hardware: I never missed a backlight on the original as I mostly played at home. It was great in the hand yes, but I didn’t found the micro to be uncomfortable either. I missed the SP, fortunately. I wanted the Famicom one, but didn’t have the money to import one. Then came the micro along, which was much more sexier! Since it’s so small, I actually still carry it around with me along with my DS. Edit: Arrgh! I forgot I have Rhythm Tengoku, but I can’t find it! Phew! :p Edited August 14, 2011 by Sméagol
nekunando Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 I played Mario Kart: Super Circuit a little again this morning and was certainly having fun with it For those of you that maybe didn't enjoy it much when it originally came out, hopefully the release on 3DS will give you all an opportunity to give it another go
Cube Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 Took my GBA camping instead of the 3DS. Currently playing through Minish Cap and Banjo-Kazooie. Minish Cap is still as great as it was - better than Ocarina. Grunty's Revenge I've never played before but it is brilliant so far. Also got Fusion (played before), Golden Sun, Sonic Advance and Harvest Moon with me.
S.C.G Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 That reminds me, I must move on from Mario Kart : Super Circuit soon as I've Metroid Fusion to play through again being that it's also one of the free Ambassador games. I've already completed it before and so could probably review it off the top of my head but... well... there's no harm in refreshing my memory I suppose.
nekunando Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 I cleared DK: King of Swing this afternoon and, while it was frustrating at times, I kinda enjoyed it.. but I hope it isn't one of the GBA games to be given out on 3DS, mainly because I've played it so recently
Shorty Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 38 posts and nobody has mentioned Final Fantasy Tactics Advance? It was a huuuuge game, with gorgeous graphics, hundreds of ways to play, even a decent story. I loved that game, definitely my favourite on the GBA, along with THPS2, Advance Wars and Golden Sun. Golden Sun and FFTA showed how great the environments could look on a GBA, which is part of what made Ruby/Sapphire so visually disappointing. Other great games that aren't getting enough love, Sonic Advance (the first good Sonic game for years, IMO!) and Tekken Advance (first good handheld fighter). It's worth a reminder that the Phoenix Wright games started out as GBA games before they hit our shores.
Captain Falcon Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 Other great games that aren't getting enough love, Sonic Advance (the first good Sonic game for years, IMO!) Sonic Advance is what I deem to be the real Sonic 4 as it really does feel like the old Megadrive games - more so than the actual Sonic 4 which gets the level design right but the control wrong. I had a brief go on Mario Kart the other night... yeah, still not much of a fan. Also (*raises shields*), I don't see what is so great about Astro Boy. I'm not saying it's not decent, but it's hardly the second coming as some sites make it out to be. There is clearly a lot of love there by the developers with all the references to the series history but teven then, iffy jumping, limited attacks and horrendous slow down can't be entirely forgive. Plus a nasty difficulty on top.

I thought the difficulty and limited moves worked well (like, old-school well) and the "character evolution system" helped keep things interesting, but I can see why others would think otherwise. And the slowdowns are really bad, yes. There's no excuse for that.

And the slowdowns are really bad, yes. There's no excuse for that. Whilst there is a certain joy in performing the right combos at the right time to successfully clear the screen, it always ended up being the same combo for 99% of the time. And then you'd bust out the machine gun special for when things got a bit hectic. It just felt a bit repetitive at times and whilst the levelling up system was nice, because you have the freedom to power up however you want, it's quite easy to make the game even harder for yourself than it already is if you choose to focus on certain areas first. It did make me genuinely interested in the series and ended up watching the cartoon as a result but as a game, I felt there could have been some easy ways to improve it.
Retro_Link Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 I bought a GBA on day one... but for some reason I didn't click with the console and I'm not really sure why. Part of me blames Super Mario Advance (Super Mario Bros 2)... because that's proberly one of my least favourite games EVER! And yet I bought it as a launch title because it was Mario... spent the my first few days with the console playing through it, and not enjoying a single minute of it! :p I honestly don't know what it was about the console, but I just didn't fully get into it. That's not to say it didn't have some great games... practically every other game I bought for the console I really, really enjoyed... - F-Zero Maximum Velocity (was fun, but I prefer 3D F-Zero) - Mario Kart Super Circuit (brilliant game, one of my favourite Mario Karts, with great levels.) - Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2 - ISS Advance (or something like that) - Kuru Kuru Kururin (fantastic puzzle game) - Golden Sun - What was that shooter?... Ecks vs Sever or something? But yeah, that's it really, there may have been a couple of other games, but I didn't stick with the console past the earlier years. For that reason, I'm very much looking forward to the GBA games were getting on the 3DS... as I missed some gems like the Metroids, Zelda, Yoshi, Wario etc... etc...
Captain Falcon Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 I bought a GBA on day one... but for some reason I didn't click with the console and I'm not really sure why. And yet I bought it as a launch title because it was Mario... spent the my first few days with the console playing through it, and not enjoying a single minute of it! :p I ordered mine from Simply Games with F-Zero and whilst hey got the machine to me for day of release, it seemed they had no stock of F-Zero so I asked my mum to pick me up Super Mario Advance when she went shopping the next day. SMB2 has always been my favourite 2D Mario Bros game (so not including YI which does beat it), so I was glad to have it and finding the Yoshi eggs on the second run through, or however it was done, was more than enough to keep me playing for a bit. After about 2 weeks, I cancelled my order for F-Zero and got it from somewhere else. And yeah, it was ok - not good, not bad, just ok. Mode 7 racers just don't do it for me. I unlocked all the tracks and vehicles but eventually traded it in. Compared to wonderful control of X, it just didn't cut it. Mario Kart was a gift from my bro and was never something I'd buy for myself - we both had copies so we could play multiplayer. - What was that shooter?... Ecks vs Sever or something? Yes, Ecks vs Sever. Saw some really promising previews and reviews for the game and I got it and boy was I disappointed. I kind wish you hadn't mentioned that as I'd prefer not to remember it Traded that in as well.
Retro_Link Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 Yeah I think I got Mario and F-Zero at launch, seemed the obvious titles... and whilst F-Zero was a lot of fun, it wasn't the best of starts to a console for me. I dunno exactly what it is about SMB2, but like you and Ecks vs Sever, I don't even like to think about it! :p Ecks vs Sever was OK... for what it was! I mean FPS' weren't really being done on the console (perhaps for a reason!)... so in a way it was nice to have something a bit different, and it looked alright. But it got pretty difficult towards the end... not fully sure I completed it... though I have a feeling I may have got to the last level? I love a Kuru Kuru Kururin sequel!
daftada Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 I listed my faves on my blog a while back, but basically my top choices are: Wario Ware Zelda Minish Cap - Link's Awakening just edges this in terms of my fave handheld Zelda, but this is still an incredible game. The miniature game mechanic was used brilliantly and it had some great original items. Advance Wars Tales of Phantasia FF6 Metroid Zero Mission - Never got into the original or played much of Super Metroid (something i've now rectified) so this was my first 2D Metroid experience. Bought it to pass the time while I was on my way to playtest Battalion Wars and completed it within two days as it was so compelling. The end-game is terrific and a great addition. Mariokart Super Circuit - I wasn't a huge fan of MK 64, and this return to mode 7 just clicked for me. Plus it had all the snes tracks as an unlockable bonus so what's not to like? Pokemon Sapphire - I know this gets some flack from fans, but I personally have great memories of exploring Hoenn. I miss the poffin mixing, secret bases and talent shows, which I thought were great little side quests. Golden Sun - Never got to the end, but feeling compelled to after playing Dark Dawn. I really hope this and the sequel are part of the 10 free 3DS GBA games.

It was a huuuuge game, with gorgeous graphics, hundreds of ways to play, even a decent story. I loved that game, definitely my favourite on the GBA, along with THPS2, Advance Wars and Golden Sun. I was waiting for someone to post about FFTA. I have it and despite reading endless praise for the game, I didn't really get into it as I thought I would. I just popped it in there now to check how far I got and I've 21h 35mins on the clock. Not sure why it didn't click with me. One thing I will give it is this: I think the moogles in FFTA are my favourite design.
dwarf Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 OMJ and Kuru Kuru Kururin what an immensely difficult but fun game. YES. I remember buying it abroad, my sister was trying to bargain with me to get this 3d tetris thingamie instead. Glad I didn't listen to her because KKK (lawl) was awesome. Finally, some love for MK:SC My favourite tracks would have to be the Bowser's Castle tracks plus Cheep Cheep Beach and the sublime Sky Garden which had it all for me, nice visuals on the clouds with the vines - not to mention the blimp in the background! - the music was excellent oh and there was a cheeky shortcut you could take by hopping over the clouds. A lot of love for this post, that short cut was rad (but occasionally irritating to pull off).
Captain Falcon Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 The original GBA features in the promos for Channel 4's impending "100 Greatest Gadgets" programme. I wonder if that's just because the didn't want an advert consisting of just the most recent tech and thought they'd go for an older system (instead of the DS), though surely the original "brick" Game Boy would have been wiser.
darksnowman Posted September 20, 2011 Author Posted September 20, 2011 Since getting the Minish Cap the Christmas it came out over here (2004, according to the title screen), I've played it to the end twice without actually completing it. This evening after work, I fired up the Micro and put paid to Vaati - he was pretty easy in the grand scheme of things, but I was glad you could fill up your health before the final phase... but then it ended up the easiest anyway. What I will always remember about the Minish Cap are the kinstones. I really wish they weren't so random because I feel that doesn't have a place in Zelda games - if you could gather kinstones from certain chests, defeating all the enemies in a room or whatever, I think that would have been a better fit, y'know?
