@ jayseven; Dude... you're reciting Guardian propaganda.

Wow: I can name shit papers too.

Also, it matters not who has our data, the UK Govt. have the worst track record when it comes to data safety.

No.

I'm not going to run through 100+ years of history with you, including the Reichstag Fire, aswell as a lessons on modern Britain, Liberty and Democracy etc.

No.

Every little helps, however.

Are you one of those people who believes the Soviets were trying to control all their citizens? Using ID papers as help?

If so, your argument fails at the first hurdle.

I still have no clue what you're talking about. You make no sense to me.

And if you're not willing to explain your point, then fine, but then what's the point in sharing it in the first place?

I'm sorry that I don't have time, nor the patience to educate you on as simplistic history as the USSR: the only comparison with your own argument I believed you should be able to get.

Would you understand if I replaced the word "Soviets" with "Nazis" in my last point?

ID cards will provide no new info. The fact is, the UK is getting worse and worse because of privatisation. Power and control is taken away from those we elect into power and, instead, given to those who are driven merely by profit. I agree that we can dislike a government, but the idea of a government is that we're meant to be able to trust in our leaders to do what is best for us. There's too much paranoia about our information - paranoia from people who, as I say, freely have a tescos clubcard, or use facebook, or whatever. Once you realse that being a statistic means there's no personal property to the way information works you'll start to give less of a shit about who has any of it.

You may hide your porn browsing from your friends, spouses or family but there are 'bodies' out there who have that information. Does that bother you?

BLEH. Big issue at hand. Too drunk to handle it.

I believe that honesty is the best policy. That ties in to stuff. I am also a fan in education and information. I am especially eager for people to realise that they do not have all of the information on a particular subject, and I believe it is important for individuals to maintain their opinion whilst being aware of the limited information their opinion is based on. Stuff. THINGS.

if northern Ireland left the UK the troubles would escalate to crazy heights... there's no chance of that happening. We're not exactly well off, but nobody is... we've not had the trouble the south has anyway.

I don't know much about NI bar a few bits - the media here tends to ignore you.

All I know is that Sinn Fein seems to gain seats every election.

In Ireland we have the Age Card, basically a card with your photo and age on it, specifically for this purpose. I think it's a good idea as I wouldn't like to tote my passport around just in case it got lost.

I've posted about people's terrible estimates of my age at work in the good stuff thread, but here's a tally of all people's guesses so far (I'm 20):

  • Junior Cert student x 2
  • 12 years old
  • 16 years old
  • Leaving Cert student x 2
  • secondary school
  • finished college

According to my mum, I look like a 12 year old boy. So I guess I don't look my age :awesome:

I'm well aware of all that, and agree.

I wasn't being an arsehole. I just don't have time to explain such basic shit to someone.

Yeah sorry, can't be bothered with people like you. Go study the USSR some more then and worry about the government using your address to come and kill you at night, or whatever.

Well I'm sorry that you find knowledge and awareness so offensive.

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

And I rarely appreciate the use of straw-men to attack people, whether used sarcastically or otherwise.

Well it's not overly interesting enough to look up anything about; and The Troubles and other NI politics get boring fast.

Erm...don't they already have the information in the forms of Driving Licenses and Passports?

I am aware of this point.

The idea of the ID Cards was that they'd be used for more than just Driving Licences and Passport style uses however.

And I used to be pro-ID card by the way.

I've always thought of them both as ID cards really. They both identify you. What does an ID have that is special?

Driver's license = pass a driving test to get

ID card = proof of citizenship, everyone has one by default/without having to apply for it (not that we have ID cards here...but I have a Hong Kong ID card)

SO you can't get an age/ID in the Uk?

That's a bit silly.. It's a handy card. I mean christ for those of us that don't drive WHO wants to carry around a passport when you're out on the piss? If you lose it, it's a bitch to get a replacement.

Public: People are causing trouble and they're drunk.

Govt: Okay, instead of doing something helpful like fines and prison and castration for those who cause problems, we'll make it so anyone who looks under 40 years old has to have ID on them to buy alcohol, tobacco, pieces of paper, or officially sharp metal.

Public: Great, that sounds like it'll stop the 16 year old trouble makers for sure.

Public: Wait, I look under 50! Can I have an ID?

Govt: Sure! That'll be £100 upfront please.

Public: Oh....

Public: Hey; there are still drunk trouble makers, but they're over 40 - and the 16 year olds just got alcopops from the fridge, (and sharp metal from the drawer a young child has access to).

Govt: Oh; we'll have to try making alcohol more expensive then. Then they wont buy as much.

Public: But then I can't afford any, especially since I just paid you £100, why should I be punished?

Govt: We're trying to clean up the streets like you asked and whinged about. It's not our fault you can't afford to have a drink every now and then anymore. We're alright though, we earn four times what you do.

"We need ID if we don't want any trouble buying alcohol etc"

There was a time when you didn't need ID, and the country worked fine...

There are alternatives, but a lot of places don't like them.

This sounds logical to me? Alcohol is not necessary for survival.

So?

Why not ban it altogether then?

Why don't we ban everything not necessary for survival?

Why should one man have such control over the rights of another man who is doing no-body any harm?

So, I don't get why people get so jumped up about it.

Whoa, hold on. Alcohol doesn't do any harm? What about all of the car accidents, murders, trouble, etc. caused by irresponsible drinking? I definitely think it's something to be controlled (reasonably of course, not by banning it :p).

The figurative man who is doing nobody harm has potential to do harm to others.

As for the rest of your post, don't patronise me :p

Passport. Simple as.

I suppose if you're abroad then you just have to show a bit of cleavage and you'll get in easily with no ID.

You don't need to be abroad to see that happening.

Dude, just because some people don't have the same knowledge of the history of X doesn't mean you can be a dick about it.

I don't know much about NI bar a few bits - the media here tends to ignore you.

S'alright, I daresay Raining doesn't have time or patience to educate you on simplistic history.
