Slaggis Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 I need something to help prrtect my laptop, so any advice? I don't mind paying for something (I would prefer to tbh) as long as it's a quality product. I've heard Norton is shit, and Mcafee annoys the hell out of me. Is there something better?
Shorty Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 nod32 is a great virus prog if you dont mind paying a bit, AVG is great too and there's a free version. Windows has a firewall built in....
Mr_Odwin Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 NOD32/Kaspersky for anti-virus and I dunno about firewalls these days ... Comodo, Zonealarm? I don't have either, but then I'm a master wizard at not getting infected.
Slaggis Posted January 23, 2009 Author Posted January 23, 2009 nod32 is a great virus prog if you dont mind paying a bit, AVG is great too and there's a free version. Windows has a firewall built in.... I'm aware windows has a firewall built in. It's just, I've never found it to be that wonderful. So Nod32 and Kapersky? Right. Are they both big system hogs? I had a zone alarm security suite thing once, and that seemed to take up masses of memory/processer power. Also, are they both relatively simple to use?
Rummy Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 Personally I just run avast! and I'm behind my router, no firewall software on here, I just let Windows Firewall do what it has to whenever it has to(which seems to be rarely, or it does it unnoticeably). Used to have ZA but it seemed to bugger things up, can't say I've ever had any sort of problems either! Odd viruses pop up here and there but avast! gets them as soon as they appear. Are you just being precautious or are you actually having problems already?
Mr_Odwin Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 For me the Windows Firewall and a router firewall is sufficient. Apparently NOD32 is very light on your system.
nightwolf Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 I found zonealarms to be one of my favourite, very easy to use also. Otherwise AVG is the way to go, I'd also put spybot on too for keyloggers etc. I used avast on my laptop, but it seems like a pain in the backside to be using.
Nolan Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 Personally I just run avast! and I'm behind my router, no firewall software on here, I just let Windows Firewall do what it has to whenever it has to(which seems to be rarely, or it does it unnoticeably). Same right here. Kaspersky is a good way to go though, because it's anti-virus and firewall, but it can interfere with other programs of the same nature.
Ten10 Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 I've been using a zonealarm and avg combination for years, go hand in hand quite well in my opinion. STAY AWAY FROM NORTON. Will make your system cry, will make you cry, and in general its just all tears.
Raining_again Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 I use AVG free and router firewall. Never had any issues before =) think i might have windows firewall on too!
Jimbob Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 I got Kaspersky running atm, its pretty good as well at keeping me protected online. I've also got Windows Firewall running as well and a router Firewall, so techically i got 3 Firewalls on the same network going to the same PC.
Sheikah Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 AVG for antivirus and ZoneAlarm for firewall. ZA is just really easy to use and I don't have any problems with it, and AVG does its job perfectly. Both free, too.
Kirkatronics Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 OMG get a mac!!!! lolz Not always the best solution. They still have viruses, theyre just less common. Also, they are expensive for the hardware you get.
The fish Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 If money isn't an issue, Prevx is the best thing since sliced bread. For those light on cash/RAM, Windows is perfectly adequate for general internet browsing.

Pancake Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 I got a free 6 months of McAfee with my new laptop, and it's not great from what i can make out so far. The layout is bad.
Ten10 Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 I had to remove Norton from my new hp laptop, as it was protecting all my crap ware from being deleted, and just generally giving me and my system grief. I though I would tough it out until my free trial period ended, but nope, I couldn't take it anymore.
McPhee Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 Windows Firewall (because it uses basically no extra system resources and has zilcho compatability problems) and AVG (because they gave me the full edition for free <3)
RoadKill Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 Windows Firewall (because it uses basically no extra system resources and has zilcho compatability problems) and AVG (because they gave me the full edition for free <3) Anything more than this is excessive. No, Norton and McAfee are not good, they're bloated piles of shit (especially Norton). I'd definitely recommend running Spybot Search & Destroy, and updating it now and then and running an immunise (don't install teatimer on the install if you don't want prompts all the time when you install stuff). Almost all infections have nothing to do with firewalls anyway, and it's almost always user error, or a lack of updating windows to leave gaping security flaws. Update windows, and don't run shit you don't recognise, and you'll rarely have issues.
