darksnowman Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 I just was having a nosey around Gametrailers and watched ScrewAttacks latest top ten effort- fighting games. You know the drill, its only one game per franchise so don't come whinging because its not a full top ten of Street Fighter games. Top Ten Here's the list if you wanna look at it, but I'll spoiler it off for anyone who wants to watch it first: 10: Guilty Gear X2 Reload 9: Dead of Alive 4 8: Tekken 3 7: Soul Calibur 6: Virtua Fighter 5 5: Killer Instinct 4: Mortal Kombat 2 3: Super Smash Bros. Melee 2: Marvel vs Capcom 2 1: Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike There you have it. My personal favourite is Killer Instinct. I was brought up on a chaotic diet of Street Fighter 2, SF2: Turbo and Mortal Kombat, but once I got into Killer Instinct I've never looked back as far as fighters are concerned. The combo system rocks in it and there are decent finishing moves too as well as some great characters like B. Orchid, Jago and Thunder. Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat are still good, but compared to K.I, I just find them lacking. I like Smash Bros too, but it wouldn't be my fave...! So, whats your favourite fighting game? Street Fighter, Soul Calibur, Smash... Tekken??
Hero-of-Time Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 I watched it this morning. The Smash Bros section is funny as hell.
rapunzel Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 What no Way of the exploding fist, no no no thrice no, now if you dont know what WotEF is i suggest you get a time machine and travel back to the 80's and play it...or get a spectrum emulator and try it whatever floats your boat.
Guest Jordan Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 Number 1 = totally right. Third strike is by farrrr the best beat 'em up i've ever played. Played hours and hours of my time playing it.
Aalborg Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 He he im old enough to remember Exploding Fist.. and international Karate.. One of my favorite was an old NES wrestling game.. But I sort of think it was because it was so bad and we laughed and laughed when we played it.. and boy.. here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZLopCUCfiE
LazyBoy Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 Not a bad list, though Mortal Kombat should have been lower, and virtua fighter higher. Funny video.
khilafah Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 Soul Calibur should be higher. It is better than Tekken no doubt. Third Strike deserves No 1 spot as it is a thing of beauty. the balance is superb and it plays so sweet. Not sure about Marvel vs Capcom at No 2. great game and love playing it but it can be cheap if you pick certain characters. I cannot believe there is not one SNK fighter in the top 10. KOF 98/99 are superb games. Fatal Fury: Mark of Wolves is outstanding and deserves more respect. SSMB is strange for me. I just don't like it like everyone else does. I have given it nuff game time but I just don't find it that great.
Patch Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 So, whats your favourite fighting game? Street Fighter, Soul Calibur, Smash... Tekken?? For some reason, I just can't get into 'realistic' fighting games. The only fighters I've enjoyed are the cartoony ones. This is why I love Streets of Rage, Streetfighter and of course, Smash Brothers.
Jonnas Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 Guilty Gear X2 Reload - I only played one game of this series (for the GBA). Button mashing at it's best, but I probably can't play this game competitively. I'd probably lose to a button-mashing newbie. Dead or Alive is there for the girls, right? Because it's nothing special, otherwise. Tekken 3 should've been much higher. That game is too good. Soul Calibur 2 is top-notch. Never played the first one, but it looks very similar to the second one. The third had more button-mashing and meaningless characters, but it was good, too. The only Virtua Fighter I played was 2. I remember it being a bit cheap, but it's been a while. Can't comment on 5, though. I never liked Killer Instinct as much as some other people. I don't know why, since I can't see anything particularly wrong with it. Mortal Kombat 2 should've been lower. It's just gore, really. Take away the gore and you get a fighting game that's nothing special. The SSBM section was...weird, to say the least. But it's my favorite fighting game of this generation (not for competitive reasons, though). However, I never played MvC2 and Street Fighter III. I'd love to, though. They look bloody brilliant.
mcj metroid Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 very good list i can't complain a single bit about it. Although smash bros weems very out of place on it.
The Bard Posted November 29, 2007 Posted November 29, 2007 10: Guilty Gear X2 Reload 9: Dead of Alive 4 8: Tekken 3 7: Soul Calibur 6: Virtua Fighter 5 5: Killer Instinct 4: Mortal Kombat 2 3: Super Smash Bros. Melee 2: Marvel vs Capcom 2 1: Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike The inclusion of those games makes this list redundant. Apart from that, I totally agree with the list, even though, I would move Guilty Gear from 10 to 3, and replace Tekken 3 with Tekken 5.
Mikey Posted November 29, 2007 Posted November 29, 2007 Soul Calibur 1 is in the list, when Soul Calibur 2 is better. Never played SC3, so can't comment on that.
khilafah Posted November 29, 2007 Posted November 29, 2007 Killer Instinct should not be in the top 10 and SSMB should be way lower.
Zechs Merquise Posted November 29, 2007 Posted November 29, 2007 Well, I still think Street Fighter 2 Turbo is the best. I was surprised Soul Calibur wasn't higher. I defo agree with Marvel vs Capcom 2, that game kept me playing on the Dreamcast for years! I loved it, I remember palying for ages against my mate at Uni. Wonderful game.
mcj metroid Posted November 29, 2007 Posted November 29, 2007 Soul Calibur 1 is in the list, when Soul Calibur 2 is better. Never played SC3, so can't comment on that. no it isn't....... How is it better?
khilafah Posted November 29, 2007 Posted November 29, 2007 Soul Calibur 2 probably is better just about. The 8-way run was not in the first game but Soul Calibur II just didnt give you that amazing feeling that the first game did. Loading up Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast was something really special!!
RoadKill Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 Before I even clicked on this thread, I hoped it would be Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, and it was.. fuckin a
Hero-of-Time Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 I defo agree with Marvel vs Capcom 2, that game kept me playing on the Dreamcast for years! I loved it, I remember palying for ages against my mate at Uni. Wonderful game. Agreed. I played it on my Dreamcast and then when I sold that I rebought it on the PS2. I had so much fun unlocking all the characters and playing multiplayer with my mates, good times indeed.
mcj metroid Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 Soul Calibur 2 probably is better just about. The 8-way run was not in the first game but Soul Calibur II just didnt give you that amazing feeling that the first game did. Loading up Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast was something really special!! hm the only reason someone could say the second was better is cause link is in it? I honestly don't know why else it would be. personally i prefer soul blade to them all but there you go.
4q2 Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 What no Way of the exploding fist, no no no thrice no, now if you dont know what WotEF is i suggest you get a time machine and travel back to the 80's and play it...or get a spectrum emulator and try it whatever floats your boat. I remember purchasing that for the sum of £7.95 on the day it was released...Was on holiday in Skeggy at the time. Melbourne House...Wonder what happenened to them ? If they mentioned Fist they would have been shot for not mentioning IK+ though.
Pete Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 hm the only reason someone could say the second was better is cause link is in it? I honestly don't know why else it would be. Seriously... (Its all opinions I know) More Moves, Better Graphics, Improved faster more flowing game play (IMO), SC2 --> SC end of, as far as im concerned. Not that Soul Calibur isn't a great game as well. Any ways I perfer Alpha 3 to 3rd strike, not that im saying thats better but I prefer it.
Hero-of-Time Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 I perfer Alpha 3 to 3rd strike, not that im saying thats better but I prefer it. Same as me. I thought Alpha 3 was easily the best Street Fighter game but then again im not a hardcore fighter player like many.
The Bard Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 Alpha 3 was absolutely amazing, almost the perfect fighter. Then 3rd Strike came along, which is the perfect fighter, almost. I mean how the fuck do you explain Hugo and Necro? Stupid.
Zechs Merquise Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 Agreed. I played it on my Dreamcast and then when I sold that I rebought it on the PS2. I had so much fun unlocking all the characters and playing multiplayer with my mates, good times indeed. I heard it was actually superior on the Dreamcast than the PS2 (oddly enough). I have every single Capcom fighting game released on CPS1 and CPS2. I wish I had the CPS3 stuff. But sadly I've only ever played them on other people's consoles.

I have every single Capcom fighting game released on CPS1 and CPS2. I wish I had the CPS3 stuff. But sadly I've only ever played them on other people's consoles. Capcom vs SNK 2 on the Dreamcast was also better than the PS2/GC and xbox versions. I have Japanese version of Marvel vs Capcom 2 so I couldnt unlock all the fighters as some could only be unlocked playing online or on the arcade machine using the VMU memory card. None of the arcade machines over here used the DC VMU. only way was downloading a save file. Most of the Capcom fighting games were online on the dreamcast in Japan. Shame people living outside of Japan could not access the servers.
