Toy Story 3 a Go

2009 release date planned.

US, February 9, 2007 - Disney animation bosses John Lasseter and Ed Catmull gave a rundown to investors yesterday on their upcoming slate, and the biggest news to come from that conference call was the revelation that the on again, off again Toy Story 3 is on again.

The CGI sequel will likely arrive in 2009, but Lasseter -- the director of the first two films and the Pixar chief who is now running Disney's animation division -- will not helm the film. That task will fall to Lee Unkrich, who has co-directed Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc. and Finding Nemo. Michael Arndt, recently nominated for an Academy Award for his Little Miss Sunshine script, is writing the film.

"The greatest thing about the merger of the two companies is that the creators of Toy Story 1 and 2 can make 3 with the story that we wanted," said Lasseter, according to Variety, during the call, an obvious reference to Disney's previous plans to make the third film without the assistance of Pixar. Of course, that was before Pixar and Disney merged, and Lasseter became the boss of Walt Disney's ghost.

A change also seems to be underway at Walt Disney Feature Animation, the traditional non-Pixar arm of the operation, with Lasseter announcing that Chris Williams, a company veteran, is now directing 2008's American Dog. Williams has replaced Lilo & Stitch director Chris Sanders on the project, who left the company recently.

Catmull, meanwhile, says that reports that Walt Disney Feature Animation might be returning to 2-D animation are accurate -- that arm of the company does plan on focusing on classically hand-drawn films again.

"We're really excited about that and have brought back some great directors to work on that," says Catmull. One such film in development is The Frog Princess from Ron Clements and John Musker, the men behind The Little Mermaid and several other Disney hits who returned to Disney last year at Lasseter's request.

Toy Story 1 and 2 are absolutely FANTASTIC films!!

Though I am a bit nervous that a third film might not be able to deliver something new and end the franchise on a bad note!

One good thing is the fact that it will be a Disney Pixar film; it would have been terrible if the project had gone ahead without Pixar, as the article says may of actually happened at one point!!

But a change of director? (though it may not matter considering what Lee Unkrich has worked on, including co-directing Toy Story 2)

Would it be safer to leave it at two awesome films? The story certainly doesn't require a third!

Maybe they should have left Toy Story the legendary franchise it is and perhaps work on a Monsters Inc. 2 or Incredibles 2 for example?

I don't know why but your post made me smile. =)

And Toy Story 3 would be nice as long as they can give it a very interesting story and not just turn it into some crappy sequel.

Hmm... Looks as though Disney has been planning this for a long time.

Should be good, as Toy Story 1 & 2 are two of my favourite films ever, but the most interesting part of the article I read was...

Looking forward to them.

Toy Story is one of my favourite films ever :D although I wasn't as big a fan of the second, in fact I don't think I was ever even interested enough to watch it a second time (maybe I should rent it or something and give it another try?). Here's hoping they recapture the awesomeness of the original.

To be honest, every Pixar film has been great up until Cars. That wasn't good at all. Toy Story is great, one of that few films I have on video but haven't chucked out. Let's hope this one is just as good.

(Isn't it amazing how many films are ending in 3 nowadays? Pirates Of the Caribbean 3, Shrek 3, spiderman 3 and now Toystory 3.)

Well, if they don't get another sequel (like Shrek), then theres also Resident Evil 3, Bourne 3, Ghostbusters 3. But 3 has always been a "magic number" in books/films.

Anyway, I hope pixar can make good films once more.

Hmm, I dunno how I feel about this. I mean, I loved Toy Story, and Toy Story 2 was very good too(although I think it was lacking something the original had). I'm worried the third will be lacking it too, I don't think anything can really even match the first Toy Story. I also get annoyed at all these CGI films coming out of Disney since Toy Story, they're all over the place! I feel like Toy Story had some magic being the first one, and ever since everythings just trying to achieve the same. I guess I didn't really explain myself very well, but theres something about a third Toy Story that makes me weary, like it'll detract from the first one somehow sort of thing?

With most films and such the 2nd is usually a lot different in that sort of way, the 1st usually feels a lot 'stonger' to me.

I have a feeling this one will be set in the future where Andy has grown out of toys like what Woody worried about in the 2nd.

OR

There will be some bad toy trouble or something :heh:

I'm not expecting greats thing from a 3rd film, but hopefully it will be good.

The problem is that what's-her-face will be a main character and she's kind of annoying. A lot more of Mr. Potato Head & Ham would be good :heh:...And of course the others :)

Yeah she is a bit annoying, but thankfully Bullseye is awesome!

They could do some great stuff with Woody and Bullseye!

Though I hope Slinky, Rex, RC etc... also get good parts in the film like they did in Toy Story 2!
