Yeah but if it wasn't for the so called 'shock factor' they keep trying to use, it be nothing but a dressed up OC. Half the plots have been ripped from "The OC", hell half the guest stars as well. To be fair the shock factor is in part a response to things like the PTC complaining. Its a good advertising idea. Although I'd admit the show isn't really shocking, and can be a bit tripe at times. Great music though. I'd disagree, the OC wasn't serious. Josh Schwartz was awesome at putting in little comedy moments that you might not necessarily pick up the first time through.
