  1. General Book Thread

I didn't enjoy Dune at all - sorry, I know that makes me a heathen - but I just thought it was trying too hard and didn't have enough substance. Admittedly it could be partly because I listened to it rather than read it (I have a long commute so try to use it to catch up on reading) and I know some books are better when read.
  2. good stuff thread.

I love Sciroccos, a definite future classic. Unfortunately this means prices are rising for decent ones. Plus my personal favourite, the Series 2 Storm, was limited anyway.
  3. Practicality vs Fun

It's true. I love cars and have been into them my whole life, but my motorbike is more fun that I would ever have expected. I use it as my daily commute and it ticks all the boxes - I get 130+ mpg, get to work significantly quicker than I would in a car (cutting through traffic jams still leaves me with a smug smile on my face) and it's great fun. Alternatively, if you want cheap practicality, speed and something that only a petrolhead will realise is quick how about a Volvo T5-R estate. I'll always have a major soft spot for these after their entry in the BTCC in the early nineties.
  4. bad stuff thread.

Trust me, you don't have to worry about repaying it any time soon - I'm 27 and my student overdraft just sits there with enough to cover the interest each month going in, as it has done for the last 6 years.
  5. If my experience with on-line dating is anything to go by I don't think being 'good looking' particularly matters to the women. Charlie is right, it's about the smile and projecting your personality. Oh, and a little tip I learnt - if a woman's profile only shows her face it means she's fat Obviously appearance still matters to men!
  6. Eggs

A lot of vegetables (typically ones like cucumbers with a high water percentage) don't last well in the fridge as at low temperatures the water expands and breaks down the cell walls, starting the rotting process.
  7. Eggs

Scrambled egg with smoked salmon in is a favourite of mine. I have also recently been cutting thick slices of bread, cutting a hole in the middle and frying eggs in the hole, so its friend bread with a fried egg in. Delicious!
  8. bad stuff thread.

Just make sure you have anything (even £10 a month) being paid into the account and they won't fuss for you to pay it back. The interest rates aren't too bad either. I have a larger overdraft that was accrued under a student account and I pay about £25 a month interest, which isn't too bad. It's really important to ensure that some money is being paid in, as I had a second student overdraft with a different bank, 'forgot' to keep paying money in on a regular basis and they demanded immediate repayment of the overdraft.

Whilst they are definitely impressive, they don't exactly scream 'anniversary'!
  10. 8ISH - Meta thread

This is a weird co-incidence. I googled myself the other day (I'm trying to 'clean up' the results) and I found this photo from a previous BISH: I believe snack food, Mr Potato Head, game pyramid, different system controllers, tickets and suiting up were the items being BISHed.
  11. Weight Loss & Fitness 2012

I got the reg number, reported them and then the police hauled them in for an interview. He then completely lied about the whole thing... ah well. Can't believe it happened - when I was considering the potential risks before I got my motorbike having my foot run over was not one I'd expected! The surgeon has offered me an op for my knee, but we are taking the conservative option. It's responded well to physio so hopefully the need for surgery can be delayed. How are you getting on with your recovery? If you don't mind me asking, what percentage of use do you/your surgein anticipate having when your recovery is full?
  12. Weight Loss & Fitness 2012

I've been trying really hard this year to get fit. I joined a gym at the start of the year and it was going really well - I'd lost a stone by the end of February and gained muscle too. Unfortunately I have had a really bad run of luck recently health wise so I haven't been able to go. I tore the cartilage in my knee, then just as I had started going back to the gym some chump ran over my foot when I was on my motorbike and now I've been ill for the last 5 weeks. At least being ill means I'm not gaining any weight!
  13. General Movie Thread

The Game is an awesome movie. I really like David Fincher, he's made some really good and thought provoking movies. TTSS to me was confusing. I'm an intelligent guy and have never found myself in this position before but I had no idea what was going on for most of that movie. I suspect that most people who raved about it secretly didn't understand it but were too embarrassed to admit it as it was so hyped and technically well made.
  14. good stuff thread.

You're remembered too and are consequently entitled to a self-esteem boost like J7. Anyone who joined the forum in Sept 05 from N64-E, C-E or R-E can be confident of being remembered and specific queries are unnecessary! I don't know if I'll stick around to be honest. I just got curious and whilst I'm off work sick I have some time in the day to kill.
  15. good stuff thread.

I do remember you, so consider yourself officially 'remembered' and you are welcome to derive self-esteem from that fact :-) I'll do my best to bring as much flaunting of marriages to N-E as I can. Everyone seems to be getting married at the moment - including my own I went to 5 weddings last year and there's at least 3 next year. Far worse that too many weddings however is children. Several of last year's marriages have now produced offspring which I am expected to show an interest in. Photos of these offspring clutter of my Facebook feed too. Humph.

How can I ignore enthusiasm of such magnitude! I'll do my best to get it read on holiday and report back.
  17. General Book Thread

I enjoyed the Dexter books, but I think I prefer the series. I'm currently re-reading Harry Potter (I'm off work sick so easy reading is appreciated) but I'm planning on going a bit heavier when we go on holiday next week. I think I'll finally read Stephen King - It and if I finish that I'll start China Mieville - Perdido Street Station which has been sat on my Kindle for ages but has daunted me by the length.
  18. good stuff thread.

Hello N-E! Long time no see, hope you are all well. Nice to see a few names I recognise are still posting. Good stuff - It's my first wedding anniversary on Monday! Traditionally this is the paper anniversary so I have just finished making a fancy card (it's paper) with a complicated origami heart on it. Actually I don't know if it's complicated or not, but it was my first ever attempt at origami so it seemed complicated to me. Other good stuff - I go on holiday next Wednesday! We booked a Baltic cruise to celebrate our anniversary, should be fantastic. We go to (among other places) St Petersburg for 3 days which should be amazing. Plus I've just sent off the booking confirmation for our safari/gorilla trek in January.
  19. Heeeeeelp!

Hi all! I know I haven't posted for an age, but I couldn't think of anywhere else that might be able to help. I think I have managed to kill my laptop... When I turn it on and starts as normal, the vista chime plays and then instead of seeing my desktop I have a black screen and my mouse. I can't do anything except move my mouse. Eventually I get a blue screen and it turns off. I can start in safe mode. I still get the black screen, but I am able to open task manager and from that I am able to run firefox, by opening it as a new task. I can't open any folders or browse my drive. Through firefox I have been able to browse a few files by using Gmail and browsing for attachments. I have been able to open a couple of files. I think I may well have acquired some form of malware, as google searches get redirected to random sites, and any search for spybot search and destroy or similar gets redirected. I have the setup for spybot on my desktop from a previous download, and have tried to install but that has failed part way through installation - possibly because I can only view my desktop through gmail 'add attachments'! I have tried to repair or reinstall windows by pressing F11 at startup (it's a Packard Bell laptop, and I have used F11 to do this before) but pressing F11 does nothing. I'm out of ideas, and have an essay due by 23:59 on wednesday. I don't think work would be too pleased if I wrote it there! If anyone has any idea what I could do please please let me know!
  20. Heeeeeelp!

Good news, I have managed to sort it out. I remebered that I had left the smart restore files on an external drive, and I was able to run them through gmail. A full re-format wasn't my preferred option, but since I did one a few weeks ago all my data was backed up so no harm done.
  21. NaNoWriMo

i'm starting tomorrow. i'm feeling optimistic that i'll at least surpass j7's total.
  22. Reg Plates - Seen any good ones?

as work we came across a policy where a girl had the number plate BJ03 SUX - it just gets worse the more you look at it!

  24. Question About Game/Station

well, try charging fair postage costs then... or make your own account. its not exactly hard. And obviously sell the games individually. who on earth would buy 70+ games in one go??
  25. i spent the day at work planning my mixes. One is ready to be burned (assuming I do manage to sucessfully restore my music collection from my corrupted hard drive). The othe mix is currently just a list of bands i'd like to include. I didnt pay much attention to what was sent in the last round, so i'm not sure what we're trying to acheive musically. Are we trying to show off how eclectic our musical taste is? Trying to introduce obscure new bands to other forumers? Or just trying to create a good mix CD and not care if the recipient has heard half the songs before?
