  1. (I knew that would be first suggestion :P)
  2. There's a weight on n-e's shoulders, and it's our past. There's over a 25k threads and 1m posts on these boards, and the majority of them hold no value whatsoever anymore. We're trying to reduce the 503s and streamline our servers so we can reduce downtime as much as possible. ... But there are some threads which are a part of our history - threads which shouldn't be forgotten, threads which added to the definition of n-e as it stands today. We are hoping to set up a read-only board for the elite threads - a hal of fame of classic moments that have occured during the n-e campaign. And we need your help. The first step in the process is to identify those key threads. We're asking you to simply cast your mind back and, using the forum search function, bring us the link for any thread from any board that you think is something that should survive the great purge. We will of course endeavour to support as many threads as suggested, for it isn't just the admin or moderator opinion of greatness that we're after, and there's no guarentee that an archived thread will live forever either, but we hope that by asking the forumites at large for their suggestions we will be able to protect what makes n-e what it is today. There is no fixed timetable for this activity, and the precise methods we'll be using in the future are not set in stone just yet. We appreciate any help you guys can offer, and we appreciate your patience as we deal with the server struggles that occur from time to time. Please leave a link and a thread title for any suggestions for archiving that you have. A summary and perhaps your reasons as to why you think that thread should live would be very helpful.
  3. Jimbo; lol newport. They get rid of that awesome moving clock with the intention to move it to a new 'centre' or something... and yeah. The place is a dive. So many empty shops, it's depressing.
  4. Realistically, the only reason I use facebook at the moment is to play a chess app, which I could use direct on the chess.com website. I used to like catching up on pictures and statuses of people but I do really feel that the news feed makes it more difficult and generally makes the whole facebook experience a lot less trivial. I'm seriously considering getting all my pics off the site (to maintain a copy, as I've been through a few laptops/computers and don't generally have copies of them anymore) and just leaving facebook. But then again, I really feel like I'm being an old man with how I approach the whole thing. I don't use modern social networking to any sort of personal advantage. I'd rather retreat and just use whatever services the internet provides if and when I need them. Facebook's IM/chat system is pretty much all that keeps me there, after chess. There's like 3 people I chat to frequently... bleh. Just... bleh.
  5. A Mokong post and no youtube plug? HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
  6. Whooooops forgottosettactics... but my default ones were probably what I would've gone for. Only drawing at home to a spanking new team? Only having one chance and conceding 3? ... Bugger!
  7. Basically lived off £200 for the last 7 weeks. Since i got my job. Job centre's methodology when it comes to 'encouraging' people back to work is nonsense. Got a part-time job where hours are between 0 and 20 hours a week, but excellent career potential. Just stupid timing with a bank holiday meant I didn't even know my claim had been cancelled until a fortnight later, where after 4 trips to the job centre and two 30 min phone calls and simply doing everything they told me to do, I'm now told, two weeks later, having still not received anything I won't get any back-pay reclaimed because I took those two weeks to apply for the backpayment of those two weeks -- which is silly because I didn't even know my claim had ended. Then they say my claim started again 2 weeks ago, but they didn't pay me anything because they say I worked over 16 hours that week. Which I didn't. And I won't get anything for another two weeks. I know I should be all inspired to look for jobs more, but the fact is I am looking, I have succeeded in getting a job, and I feel like I've been utterly punished for it. Fingers crossed on shit I'm waiting to hear on, eh.
  8. http://www.empireonline.com/features/posterletters/ Can you identify the movie based on one letter from its poster? There were maybe 2 or 3 I felt I should've known, and a couple of totally misplaced guesses, but ultimately a fair few I never would've gotten. 23 is my result!

Happy Birthday Peter/Odwin! ... pike!
  10. I liked my role, was sad it was picked off quick! Kept reading the thread after I died - something I sadly don't do very often. GG, maddog
  11. nowt is happening because we can't really tell if the riddle is the riddle itself or the post in general or the thread in general. Can't tell if the answer is a word or a phrase or a user or a song or what. Most riddles tend to have a concluding 'question' asked, and we don't have that. I don't really know how much of a difference these 'choices' we make actually have in between riddles. In regards to the current riddle, I don't know if the answer is all the usernames we've found in the riddle, or if the answer is the player names that aren't in the riddle, or if the answer is the forumite who isn't playing but is in the riddle, or if the answer is something else entirely. As such, I have precisely zero confidence in answering. I'm used to playing with riddles where there's that "ah! Of course!" moment where you realise you definitely have the answer. I appreciate the difficulty in doing this thread - it's entirely novel and awesome in its own way, but I feel it's only fair on you for me to explain my hesitant posting.
  12. One could argue it's a perfectly valid game technique that can be utilised for distraction, subversion or camouflage. It's a naturally evolved thing, and of course its use can be legit or illicit, welcome or not. There are many things in the game which grates my focus, but ultimately I have to live with them because that's simply what you get when you have all the ingredients in teh cauldron. Personally I'm, oddly, not a fan of any lengthy post during a game -- but I realise that this is due to my adhd attention span with TEH INTERNET at large. Yet somehow I'm a great fan of rambling onandonandon at any given opportunity :P tldr: Can be a mafia tactic, can be a heartfelt explanation. If people were writing such posts in this thread to explain their activity in-game then I'd genuinely be annoyed because of the way such talking-about-the-game-even-meta-whilst-playing stuff just generally annoys me.
  13. I think it's very tricky to measure the recession's effects when my working life effectively started when it started. Having no real experience of real life when things were booming, it's hard to say. I don't have a mortgage, don't have masses of savings, don't have a pension, have no shares or stocks or bonds or anything like that. I don't pay bills, have a car or associated public transport costs to consider. The job market is probably the area I have most 'experience' with, but again i can only really compare my endured events with almost anecdotal tales from the elder generations. My dad talks of a time where his degree in whatever meant he could stand a decent chance getting a job in whateverelse. My grandfather speaks of a time where he could just walk into a place and ask for a job, or where a family's reputation could get you a job. Nowadays I, perhaps cynically, see the job market as one that either requires copious experience or ridiculous qualifications, or needs you to know someone who works there already. I feel that my time at university, career-wise, could've been better spent merely working - but then, I'm still relatively early on in my life. My last three jobs have been fairly unrelated to each other (retail, telemarketing, 'hospitality'), so I'm currently acquiring working, transferable skills. I've learned a lot and proven a lot to myself and friends/family, and recession or otherwise I personally feel extremely optimistic about the future - I've always believed that being a good person leads to good things, and considering two of my last 3 jobs were at least partly due to friends who thought of me when they saw a job opportunity, surely I'm doing ok. I don't think the worst of the recession has hit us yet. There's such a disparity between how poor people think they are and how many luxuries they treat themselves to. I think that being secure in one's financial situation will become more and more vital, and lead to, hopefully, a more objective demographic eye in terms of judging what is actually value for moneyyyaaaaaaaah nope nope nope this is a discussionoverabottleofgin topic, now.
  14. Should be able to save space by changing the format - you're essentially only using half of the width on your achievements part. Feel free to expand on the printing margins - to the max of your printer's actual ability - and you'll get closer to two pages :P Reducing the amount of width that's currently dedicated to merely the years of your education would mean you could play about with the formatting of your education; '09 - '11 - Institution - Course title - grade. I'm sure you can squeeze it into two lines each, using italics/bolding/font size to make sure you're differentiating the important parts from the useless. I don't think you need to say "summer and weekend job" - just stick to talking about the duties and responsibilities. A CV is used to get your foot in the door, to get the interview where you'll (ideally) be probed further on anything the employer finds interesting on the CV. I do personally think that your CV is already a lot more engaging, and sells your abilities quicker than your previous CV did. You may be able to be more succinct with your personal profile. As your working life extends, you'll basically have to pick and choose which jobs you want to mention on your CV - I'd say the same can be done for your education. You could put your general education in with 'other' and just have a line or two saying "primary and secondary degrees in Visual Art, at [place]. The "general education latin - maths" confuses me. How would it correlate with something the employer would be able to relate to?
  15. Don't bother with ilomilo. It's really not that good/hard/cute/quirky.
  16. That is a horrible advert for the job. In similar situations I'd search out similar jobs to see what they said. Online designer, inclusing greetings cards. "With at least 3 years commercial experience, ideally from the greeting card industry, you must be fully conversant in Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Acrobat and Office. You may come from a creative or digital reprographics environment, with a solid background in colour, layout, file construction and digital workflows." Giftware designer.
  17. tl, dr, cube?
  18. Intro paragraph outlining how your experience/qualifications actually mean you are perfect for the job. In the UK you do not have to put your age on the CV - this is to try and reduce age discrimination, but it's up to you. If your CV is education-heavy, you need to stress specific elements of some of your courses in order to display both your understanding and your suitibility for the job offered. I would genuinely say that it's worth putting some of your achievements nearer the top - currently your first page, while impressive in terms of the amount of education you have ou need to stress the fact that you have sold a range of products, you need to mention being featured on sites such as redbubble, you need to bullshit and believe (as we all do) that you have a defined and unique style, while at the same time you are the master of your art and are capable of producing a range of art styles [insert reference to a course or whatever here]. With any work experience you of course need to identify any transferable skills -- elements of the job which you will carry over to the one you are applying for. Any responsibilities you had, teamworking, independant working. Depends on the job specification -- the wording of the job requirement will show you roughly the language you ought to use in response. never say "I'm ok at x" -- say you have a "good working knowledge" -- because truth is compared to 90% of the population, you really do know publisher. You're part of the generation who can pick up and learn computer programmes quickly! In the UK (no idea about elsewhere), you may be asked to provide referees - they can be previous employers, tutors who dealt with you a lot, or even 'professionals' who are friends of the family who are able to give an accurate character assassination description. Recently, though, one simply needs to put "References available upon request" at the end of the CV. I have 5 referees, depending on the job I'm going for. I've asked them if they'd be happy being my referee before putting their contact details down. It depends on the job, but hobbies/interests aren't necessarily needed (I was told this by a professional CV person, however having "go" and "BISHing" on my CV has lead to interesting conversations with interviewers, leading to jobs!), but... yeah. Really depends on the job spec. So yeah - ultimately I think your CV makes too little of your work and achievements. I do honestly think that the dutch does make it difficult to see if the CV can be improved- however, the thing about CVs is you'll always find someone who thinks they can improve your CV (like me :P). (I've fixed CVs for friends/family who were unemployed for months then got the first one they applied for after I altered their CV, and I've volunteered at a charity finding disabled people jobs, where my CV 'mad skillz' earned three people (out of three) jobs. I feel I have to say this because I know I may have a reputation as a jobless, feckless, penniless forumite and I get the feeling I ... yeah yeah yeah shut up jayseven)
  19. No way you'd get £150 selling them en masse to a dealer. If you car-boot, you are unlikely to sell all of them either. To some extent having so many items on sale is off-putting for perusers. If you're in no hurry and have other things to sell, I'd definitely recommend car-booting. Find a friend who has a sunday morning spare (and pray for good weather!). Otherwise, you'll probably get something like £50 max for a job-lot to a dealer, I'm afraid.
  20. Yeah, working 9-5 I rarely stayed up past 11 but when there's no reason to get up early the next day, I see no real harm in it. I went from going to bed at 4/5am straight into a 9-5 job, getting up at 7am. Nocturnal sleeping patterns aren't really that difficult to get out of.
  21. There are places/people that will buy 'job lots' of CDs but you won't get a great sum of money. Could you do what I did, regarding car booting; take a wheeled suitcase and a groundsheet and just lay stuff out. I was selling CDs for 50p, including radiohead, pulp fiction and trainspotting soundtracks -- really just down to whether people will fork over the money. (quite a fan of selling at car boots at the moment :P) Realistically, how much do you want for 300 CDs?
  22. Wood. And R_A; if the door handle's made from copper then it sterilises itself! ... but then your hand would smell funny...
  23. Lifting a seat isn't something I hate doing! Putting the lid down afterwards just has more courteous benefits, the way I see it. What I'll make my kids do... is another thread :P
  24. Pitting price of bike versus price of car is irrelevant in my own personal case, though I do understand why you've brought it into play. As I said, my opinion is largely based on being tight with money. I saved up for a year to buy a bike for £140 when I was 13. Rode it every day everywhere (not necessarily 50 a week but probably closer to 30, to school, town, football practice, etc). Bike lasted me 3 years, until I stopped football, etc. But because sums of money like £400+ are, to me, typically over a month's earnings at the moment, it's just not something I am actually able to comprehend or justify because I really can't visualise having that sort of free cash (mmm the days of student loans! :P). I do totally understand that if people have that sort of disposable income then it becomes more of an option. my point is moot.
