Nintenchris Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 Right i know this is a bit cheeky but im in need of answers because my mate is being treated bad by his employer and i wanna tell hime the answers to the following questions... Does anyone know what minimum wage is? also does anyone know how many days holiday your entitled to if you have a part time job... not including bank holidays? Oh and if you have a part time job are you entitled to sick pay?
Kurtle Squad Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 It's 4 weeks worth of holiday (so if you work once a week you get 4 days) and that includes Bank Holidays. Minimum wage is £3 or something for 16/17 and £5 sumthin for 18 year olds. I think you have to be ill for a week or so before being paid sick pay, and assume you'd need a note from the Dr?!?!
Nintenchris Posted February 21, 2006 Author Posted February 21, 2006 Say he is 25 years old... whats minimum wage for him??? 5pound...what? because hes getting five pound 5p an hour and i think thats taking the piss a little! Oh and he works 5 hours a night 5 days a week if that helps to figure out how much holiday hes entitled to.
James Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 £5.5 is right, its the minimum for anyone over 21, biatches.
Ashley Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 The main rate for workers aged 22 and over. On 1 October 2005 this rate was raised to £5.05 an hour, from £4.85 The accredited training rate for workers aged 22 and over who are receiving accredited training in the first six months of a job with a new employer. On 1 October 2005 this rate of the minimum wage was raised to £4.25 an hour, from £4.10. The development rate for 18-21 year olds. On 1 October 2005 rate of minimum wage was raised to £4.25 an hour, from £4.10. The development rate for 16-17 years olds. This rate is £3.00 an hour. Google Get! As far as holidays, I think it is four weeks a year (obviously if you only work one day a week its four days in essence). Dunno what the restriction is if you join part way during the year. Dunno if they figured out how much of the year you have missed and take off the time accordingly. May be the company's discretion.
Kurtle Squad Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 Yeah...that's minimum wage for him then (min wage for 18-21 is £4.10.....22+ is £5.05) He is still entitled to 4 weeks worth of holiday as far as I am aware (20 days / 20 hours for him)
Meik Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 Minimum wage is £3 or something for 16/17 and £5 sumthin for 18 year olds.False. Minimum wage is £3 for Under-18's who have finished cumpulsory education. £4.25 for 18-21 year olds, and £5.05 for those that are 22 and above. That means your friend's employer is in the right. No idea about holiday pay.
Nintenchris Posted February 21, 2006 Author Posted February 21, 2006 Five pound 5p is taking the piss a little for minimum wage isnt it! Cheers for your help guys!
Kurtle Squad Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 Well hardly anyone get's minimum do they?!?!...It depends on the job usually. And it's not like he's FORCED to work minimum wage, he can always try and go work somewhere else if he's that unhappy.
Nintenchris Posted February 21, 2006 Author Posted February 21, 2006 Yeah he could go work somewhere else.. im sure he's looked for other jobs but its very hard to even get a job round here let alone a job with good pay.
Kurtle Squad Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 Yeah...Work is hard to get everywhere really. It's unfortunate. Most jobs pay alright as far as i know though.
Ashley Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 Five pound 5p is taking the piss a little for minimum wage isnt it! Could be worse. I think the sub-18 year olds get it worse.
Arragaun Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 Over three separate jobs I've only ever been paid minimum wage for my age (17). If I was an employer, I wouldn't pay my workers any more than I had to by law. Unless they rebelled or something.
MunKy Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 I got £4.25 at McDonalds when I was 16 and I thought that was crap. Probably because the tax shafting I regularly got.
Platty Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 What are his actual working hours? If he works through the night then surely he should get either a night duty allowance or some sort of disturbance allowace pay on top of his wage which could bump it up a bit ? I do shift work (Earlies, Lates, Nights & Weekends) and i get a Night duty allowance and a weekend allowance....These 2 allowances combined give me an extra 7 grand a year on top of my basic pay which bumps up my Wages a hell of a lot. But at the end of the day if he is not happy with the wage he should either ask for a pay rise or leave. Im sure the place he works for can find someone else who would be happy with the wage.
Jon Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 A lot of it depends on where you work, companies like john lewis are awesome to their staff and give them a bonus every year that works out at about 12% of their salary.
Tom Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 id just like to add that he knew the pay etc when he signed the contract, so why did he sign it if he's got a problem with it now?
mario114 Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 Could be worse. I think the sub-18 year olds get it worse. I worked in the Japanish resturant in the holidays and was getting more than one of the chiefs (he was 17, working full time) and only geting 3 something, i was 16, but because the never asked me my age or for my card thingy (still paid tax though), i got £4.50 an hour. And i was only opperating a dish washer, i also got a split of tips.
soag Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 Im working as a tamp at cocacola nihtshift and im getting £6.33 an hour, when i hopefully get ont he books in april that should go up to £7 odd an hour
Raining_again Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 When i worked in a shop i never got any holidays or even breaks paid, got harrased by the boss and got a measley 4.10 an hour (which was teh min wage at the time) I didnt think you got paid hols or sick leave if you work a shift/part time based job
The Peeps Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 I got £4.25 at McDonalds when I was 16 and I thought that was crap. Probably because the tax shafting I regularly got. I thought under 18's were exempt from paying taxes, or am I very wrong?
Katie Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 I thought under 18's were exempt from paying taxes, or am I very wrong? Very wrong, you just have to earn a certain amount. £3 is terrible as a minumum wage, I'm so glad I get more now.
demonmike04 Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 Tell your friend to screw his current job and go work down wilkinsons cube! double on sundays! lol
Ten10 Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 He probably works at blockbuster like me because I get exactly the same crap wage. I'm leaving soon so I'm not too bothered. If he does tell him to take my advice and get off the ship before it sinks.
DiemetriX Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 Minnimum wage in Norway is around 8£ But everything is alot more expensive here :/
