Nintendo Switch Successor Announced

It's a shame almost everything got spoiled by the leaks, and the trailer shows it off in the very generic "look new tech!" kind of way we've seen 100 times before. But without a big new concept to introduce like the Switch had, I guess this at least gets the message to the general public across that it is indeed a true successor to the Switch.

Oh, and the "c" on the c-button from the leaks isn't there anymore. The button is there, but the print is not.

The colours being part of the console itself too makes me wonder what their plans are. Do you expect people to have mismatched consoles? 😱

I went to the Switch event in January 2017 and I'm a little hazy but I feel like I remember knowing quite a lot of what was going to be there - was there a direct just before the event or did we find out stuff between the reveal and the first blowout? I guess what I'm wondering is will we get bits of info between now and April or do we have to now wait 2 and a half months to see anything else.

I'm glad we're finally getting a new Mario Kart. If that was the only game at launch I'd definitely get one.

The January Presentation which announced virtually everything major (titles, hardware, etc.) took place the Thursday 12th night/Friday 13th (timezone weirdness, I think it would've been like midday on the Friday in Japan?) and then there was private hands-on following the event in Tokyo followed by wider hands-on around the world over the weekend of the 14th/15th, if I'm remembering right. 

I feel like some smaller games like Snipperclips might've been there too but not necessarily shown in the Presentation? I remember that getting loads of buzz. 

On the Switch marketing front I feel like it was virtual silence between the event being announced and the Presentation taking place? Breath of the Wild didn't get any new trailers that I can remember during that time, we didn't have titles for any of the other games shown in the reveal trailer until the Jan Presentation...maybe I'm forgetting something but I do feel like they were dead quiet. 

Makes the Pokémon Day Presents next month a bit awkwardly timed, guess they'll just focus on those games being OG Switch titles and maybe mentioning the backwards compatibility, if anything, about the Switch 2? 

Can't remember the presentation but the event had Snipperclips, Zelda, a video of Mario but not the game, 1-2 Switch and a few smaller titles. I'm sure I could dig out the write up but as it was the anniversary recently my phone reminded me. 

Also had people dressed as Luigi and Mario but I guess that won't happen this time as one of them is in prison.

We haven't really had the price conversation in amongst all the leaks leading up to this reveal – so now that we've at least seen it officially shown off for the first time and know that there isn't a major gimmick on show as a selling point, and expect it to effectively be an elevated Switch, what are your expectations for the price of the Switch 2? Have they changed at all?

OLED Is £300 so I would guess 350-375 kind of thing.

Probably £379-£400.

Unless there's some stellar 1st party software ready for launch, I can't see me being that eager to jump in on day 1.

I'm not a huge Metroid guy and so Prime 4 does nothing for me. Outside of MH, gone are the days of me playing online multiplayer games and so Mario Kart doesn't have a lasting appeal. If they do launch with a new 3D Mario game I imagine they will continue with the open world stuff like in Bowser's Fury, which I wasn't a fan of. Finally, any hopes of a traditional Zelda game are now long gone.

Yeah, I think I'd have to agree – I think it'll be £379 or £399. I think more than £400 for "just" a Switch successor right now could be a pretty hard sell, especially if they don't lean into how much more powerful this thing supposedly is.

(but also, this is the closest I've been to being sold on Wilds for a little while, so I'll keep that in mind )

Not saying it would happen anytime soon, but where do you stand on the idea of them remaking Ocarina of Time or A Link to the Past? I remember reading before how those are some of your all-time favourites -- would remaking traditional Zeldas be a bit of a cop-out or would you not mind?

I think I said it when price came up last time but man, I feel like £349 could really muddy the waters, weirdly, with just how it wouldn't feel like a big enough gap in price for a casual to go "now THIS is the price of next-gen", ya know?

I'm also in the £350-£400 ballpark. Not sure I can afford that at launch, will have to see if I can scrounge up the cash.

Much like @Hero-of-Time, there's not a lot of first party possibilities that I would be hoping for.

Except for this bit, I think MH World suuuuucks, and the multiplayer offerings Nintendo have been putting out have been pretty damn stellar! It has the best Mario Kart, and Smash Bros. The Mario Parties have been absolutely top-notch too! So future entries there are currently the main draw for me.

Other than that, more indies. Indies have been hard carrying the Switch for me. And I think Baldur's Gate 3 is a matter of when, not if. So I'll be in for that.

And also, the at this point obligatory PMD game. Remake or new entry, don't care! Gimme!

ShopTo have added their Switch 2 page for people to start registering interest; please be aware that this isn't a pre-order and if it works anything like their PS5 pre-orders did, you'll need to confirm your interest as a pre-order once it becomes available for pre-order. That was a bit of a botched job if I'm remembering right with the PS5, so hopefully they've learned their lesson. 

Seems like they're the first to get a page up for the console in the UK. If only they could be on top of announced games in the same way...

I've got a mate who has been waiting the last year or two for the Switch 2 to be announced just so he can hopefully pick up an OG Switch for a bit less – going to be his first Nintendo console since the DS and Wii era

Shame there's such a long wait to find out more details about this. Good to have confirmation of backwards compatibility at least.
The device itself looks pretty nice though, and I like the more subtle use of colour this time around too. Obviously still not a fan of the humongous size of the damn thing, means there's no way I'd be using it much in handheld mode, if at all.

The logo is a bit weird as well, I suppose they really wanted to avoid the same confusion issues that plagued the Wii to Wii U situation, but just sticking a massive 2 next to the Switch logo is kind of overkill.

Also, no Pipe Frame in the Mario Kart footage makes me sad.

It does all seem very un-Nintendo like, yeah.

Perhaps we'll be seeing the more creative/wacky stuff being done via peripherals again.

I don't think there's a particular title I'm really looking forward to out of their main IP. The ones I enjoyed the most from Nintendo have now changed to the point where I wouldn't buy I console just for them. 

I think a big draw will be the 3rd party games but having been a PS owner all these years, I've probably either played them already or they are in my PS4 backlog.

I certainly wouldn't mind but I can't see me splashing a potential £400 on remakes of games I love but have played to death.

Honestly, I think it's just that I'm getting old. New consoles and game announcements just don't excite me like they used to. I kinda feel like I've been gaming long enough to have seen it all before.

I hate the logo. The original Switch logo is pretty much built around the two very different coloured controllers, which the Switch 2 doesn't do. 

And combining it with the 2 makes it a pain to use as an icon, it doesn't work in a square shape.

I designed a different one for use on N-Europe

I can't tell whether wrapping a 2 around the analogue sticks (the curve over the one on the left, the tail under the one on the right) would work or look naff.

But I am looking forward to see the mouse joy-cons (mouse-cons? Rat-cons? We'll workshop it later) in action. Nintendo is clearly fishing for some PC ports and their respective players. It's all hands on Deck to assert their dominance.

Respect for turning a weakness into a strength, too...
