Hero-of-Time
18 minutes ago, Glen-i said: That's not really the issue here though. It's the constant years of ridiculous female character designs over the years that have resulted in an absolutely toxic environment for women who want to play games without feeling like their whole gender is just something to be ogled at. Developers shouldn't face backlash for daring to feature a female character that doesn't look like a supermodel, dresses appropriately, and is shown to be capable. And yet, you see that all the bloody time these days. What about the market/audience that don't want change though? Is it basically a "Screw you. Your opinions don't align with mine so I don't care." kind of attitude? As for developers not facing backlash, then the same rule needs to apply to developers who do want to make more suggestive designs. They constantly get it in the neck these days. Just to be clear, I dont care either way. If a developer wants to cater to a certain audience or not that's up to them but when their hand is being forced to make changes they don't really want to make, then things become a little more complicated. 1
Jonnas
10 hours ago, Julius said: I think sometimes having Type A/B/C/etc. can be just a bit too nondescript, and I think that extends far beyond just the gender options in some games. Agreed. When each "Type" of character gets called exactly that (like it's a car model or something), that's a lot of potential worldbuilding that's just being needlessly sterilised. Like, the various designs for DQ3 HD are already known: each gender gets 4 appearances. And there's a world of difference between an "Old Fogey" and a "Male No.3". It's such a ridiculous naming convention, too. I'm sure the women of the world are thrilled to be described as "Gender Type-B" (Incidentally, I remember the Harvestella Demo in particular had gender options that... slightly made your character wider or thinner, but did not change the main character's design or costume. Non-binary was the middle option, btw) 10 hours ago, Julius said: I mean just to point out the differences with the female warrior here, they literally just gave the her some briefs and an undershirt: The female warrior in DQ3 is a curious case. It clearly reflects the aesthetics of the time - the "excessively skimpy lady" in fantasy & sci-fi settings was a popular trope for warrior princesses, damsels, and concubines alike throughout the 70s and 80s - but it did not reflect Toriyama's sensibilities at all. Toriyama was more of the type to use sex appeal for comedy, rather than design a skimpy outfit for serious female characters. Dragon Ball is an excellent example of this. Heck, DQ3 itself is an example of that (the male jester is a clown, whereas the female jester is playboy bunny-girl) In that sense, the Female Warrior actually clashes with the game she's on. None of the other female classes look like this, nor do they differ so much from their male counterparts. That said, the change they went with is laughable in itself. Skin-coloured under clothes? It just screams "we're technically complying with a highly-specific demand". It doesn't change anything meaningful (the bikini mail still looks like one), but it does get around a "maximum amount of visible skin" rule. In the end, it's just stupid age rating criteria wanting easy solutions: instead of looking to see if a character is sexually exploitative or not, they just measure the amount of technically visible skin. Meanwhile, the Japanese ratings seems to only look at whether underwear is visible or not. Incidentally, Zero Suit Samus bypasses both, regardless of how many sexually suggestive poses she might make.
Julius
We're going to be getting some footage on the evolution of this game in the coming week, with Square Enix releasing daily videos to showcase this at 10:00 BST. Very much looking forward to this, and serious Chrono Trigger vibes from that wonderful concept art – for obvious reasons I suppose! Where's everyone's hype at for this? We're now just 1 month away from its 14th November release date. I'm getting my fill of JRPGs with what I'm playing now so I think I'm at like a 7/10? But imagine that hunger is going to grow once I round the game I'm playing off and switch it up a bit to grow that JRPG appetite back Edited October 14 by Julius
Julius
Okay, not exactly what I was expecting these to be, but the first of the "evolution" videos has dropped: So jolly
Dcubed
Oohhhh... these are comparison videos with previous versions of DQ3? That's much less interesting than I was expecting... Was hoping it'd be something more along the lines of how the HD2D remake itself has changed over the course of its protracted development cycle. Same I really wanted to know what happened to the battle screen, maybe there were some larger sprites where they just couldn't get the look right or whatever, but some sort of justification would've been nice to hear Surely we see an indie game adopt this style of battle screen sooner rather than later? Julius
Well, while the official DQ account is busy lying through their teeth (I jest ), here's a good bit of new footage to look at courtesy of the PlayStation channel! That music, those sound effects... Some details from the PS Blog: Quote Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake has a range of features that let you customize the combat experience. For example, at the top of the screen, you'll notice the option to change the speed of battles with the press of a button. Quote You can cycle between normal, fast, and ultra-fast settings. Normal is great for following the flow of combat, particularly during tougher scraps like boss battles. But if you want fights to fly by, such as when taking on weaker enemies, or trying to strengthen your party for the challenges ahead, the faster settings are there to make things more convenient and enjoyable. Quote You can also set behaviors for your party to allow them to act independently of your orders in battle. You can make them 'Act Wisely' for a balanced approach, 'Conserve MP' to ensure they don't throw out wasteful spells, 'Show No Mercy' to launch a full-power assault, and more. If you want your allies back under your command, simply switch to 'Follow Orders', and they'll be under your full control once more. These many options mean you can play the game how you like – full control or partial control, or even let the game take care of combat for you. It's entirely up to you. We're all Follow Orders people here, right? Edited October 14 by Julius
MindFreak
I'm inclined to picking this up at some point. It looks quite good and is both a modern and an old school RPG. It's also supposed to be the first DQ game chronologically speaking so that is perfect for me ad I have never played a DQ game before. However, might not have to time to play it when it's out. Might also just look into Sea of Stars instead.
Julius
Nintendo coming in with their overview trailer, really ramping stuff up in marketing now that there's only 1 month to go! Love these overview trailers they put together. 59 minutes ago, MindFreak said: It's also supposed to be the first DQ game chronologically speaking so that is perfect for me as I have never played a DQ game before. First of the Erdrick Trilogy (I - III) chronologically, yeah, and would set you up wonderfully for the I & II HD-2D Remakes next year so a perfect diving in point I think, without the crazy long runtimes of VIII and XI. They're very cozy and warm games, absolutely perfect for this time of year 59 minutes ago, MindFreak said: However, might not have to time to play it when it's out. Glen-i
2 hours ago, Julius said: We're all Follow Orders people here, right? Why would you ever choose anything else!? OK, there are a couple of entries where setting the healer to act automatically has them actually react to sudden health drops in the middle of a turn. Seeing as most DQ's have you input everyone's actions before the turn starts, the player can't do that. One of the rare cases where "The Computer is a cheating *******" can work in your favour. It's a very niche boss-only use, mind. And some entries AI isn't smart enough to do that, so yeah. Follow Orders 99% of the time! Anyway, I'm buying it immediately, but when I get around to playing it depends on how long M&L takes me.

Glen-i
It's a... passable Switch icon, the logo is there, but when you compare it to Dragon Quest XI... It's not the greatest icon, but it is nice. Final Fantasy can pull off the "Logo on white background" thing, but I expect more from Dragon Quest.
