bob Posted March 4, 2019 Posted March 4, 2019 If there is a third game this time round, I'm guessing it'll be called Arrow
Dcubed Posted March 4, 2019 Posted March 4, 2019 Oh snap!! https://www.resetera.com/threads/what-mechanic-change-s-will-pokemon-sword-and-shield-bring.103187/page-2#post-18500847 Quote Well, the symbol in the logo always represents the new featured mechanic: In X and Y it was the mega evolution symbol: In Sun and Moon it was a Z Crystal: In Sword and Shield it's this red and blue circle with arrows: I believe the core mechanic introduced this time will be the ability to switch between offense and defensive positions. It fits with the sword and shield motif as well as football. It'd be like how in some RPGs you can switch between front row and back row. I reckon this guy just sussed it! Didn't realise this about the Japanese logos! (Why didn't I think to check them!?) Having Offensive and Defensive positions that you can switch between during battle sounds like an awesome idea!! Would also fit amazingly well with the Rotation Battle format! (Please make a return!!) 1 2

Would also fit amazingly well with the Rotation Battle format! (Please make a return!!) That symbol is also on the sleeve of the uniform that the male main character is wearing at the end of the gameplay trailer, as well as on the signs outside of the gym stadiums. I thought that it might be a league symbol (like how all professional sports leagues have a symbol), and considering that the colours matched the colours of the game logos, the thought had crossed my mind that the focus might be on Attack/Defence, mirroring the importance of offence and defence in football, and the transition between the two (which they're clearly mirroring in gym designs, strips, etc.) -- but I thought that this might take shape in a progression of the Totem Pokémon. The stance idea makes much more sense (at least to me), and would add a completely different layer to the game, so I'm all for it! Considering the focus on teamwork in football, I do wonder if they'll mirror that by having us be part of a team this time around? Speaking of Totem Pokémon, though, I would love to see the concept taken further in the form of some optional side quests. Edited March 4, 2019 by Julius 1
Aperson Posted March 4, 2019 Posted March 4, 2019 As someone who has played Final Fantasy in the past I am all for the addition of rows. In the classic Final Fantasy games the row of your character determines how much they take and receive. So, if your character is in the front row of the party they do more damage through sword based attacks and physical moves but take far more damage. If they are in the back row they take less damage but do less damage. In those games you would normally leave the spellcasters and archers in the back row since their attacks and moves won't be affected by which row they are in, so might as well take the extra defensive boost while you can. Putting a concept like that in Pokemon would be pretty awesome and would add an extra layer of strategy to the series. Although, I don't know if they will necessarily go for rows like Final Fantasy did, we already have core mechanics that involve raising and lowering the stats. 1
Glen-i Posted March 4, 2019 Posted March 4, 2019 So basically, Aegislash's sole defining feature would no longer be it's defining feature? Hmmm... I dunno about that... That's the one thing that's making me think it's not that. At least, not in that way...

Ike Posted March 4, 2019 Posted March 4, 2019 Pokémon going Yu-Gi-Oh? I choose you, Pikachu... In defence mode. 1

I'm guessing that there will likely be a penalty for switching between Attack and Defence stances... ... probably either having to miss a turn, or to have to equip a special item (thus giving up your item slot, Mega Evo or Z Crystal) I'm also guessing that Aegislash will likely gain a new ability that lets it change stances whenever it wants without this penalty (But will probably have to sacrifice some of its base stats; because otherwise it’ll be as broken as Mega Rayquaza lol!) So this new ability, that would be unique to Aegislash, would let you change stances without having to lose a turn or waste your item slot, but it also cuts down your base attack/defence stat down by around 30%. Aegislash was always bound to get special treatment in this game anyway. I mean, hell, the game is even named after him! Edited March 4, 2019 by Dcubed 1

Aegislash was always bound to get special treatment in this game anyway. I mean, hell, the game is even named after him! You do realise that all of those tweaks to Aegislash would effectively nerf it, right? It already has to give up a move slot (For King's Shield) in order to change stances. And that also effectively costs a turn to use. And as for the aspect of stance changing as a whole. Competitive Pokémon Battling revolves around raising Pokémon to specialise in (mostly) one particular role. So why would I take a Pokémon like Charizard and ever not have it in an Offensive stance? Most Pokémon just aren't built to be that flexible. Stance changing is a good guess going by what little we know of what the icon on in the logo means. But I don't think that's how it'll be implemented. If it is, it'll just add obvious power creep to those Pokémon that have a high stat. Edited March 5, 2019 by Glen-i
MindFreak Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 Pokemon Go has a blocking mechanic in PvP. And the defence is probably where the armor comes into play. So if you know that your Milotic will be hit by Solar Beam next turn, you Switch it to defence to block that attack. But only x times per battle.

Julius Posted March 6, 2019 Posted March 6, 2019 Some awesome folks have recreated the music we heard in the background during the Direct: Really getting some Sinnoh and Unova vibes from it, which I'm all for 2
Dcubed Posted March 7, 2019 Posted March 7, 2019 Makes me think of Paper Mario: Sticker Star more than anything else
Ike Posted March 7, 2019 Posted March 7, 2019 Sword and Shield is obviously a hint at the Fire Emblem characters as gym leaders. Hope you're looking forward to battling Lucina, Male Lucina alt, Chrom and Ike. 2
Julius Posted March 9, 2019 Posted March 9, 2019 (edited) Seems like the Armoured Pokémon rumour might be true: Could also be related to the CG remake of the first movie being released this summer in Japan? I doubt that's anything other than a one-to-one remake (at least, that's how they've been advertising it), so it's a strange one to keep an eye on I guess. Just spitballing, but if not an evolution, it could also be an Ash Greninja-type deal? Edited March 9, 2019 by Julius

I was actually in the middle of editing my comment when you posted, because PokéJungle strangely didn't quote a source, so I went looking for one Come on @Glen-i, do you really think that I thought that had nothing to do with the CG remake of the first movie coming up? 1
