Like the art, dislike the artist

Me and @Goron_3 were discussing Kanye the other day and both basically agreed as a person he's an arse, but we appreciate his work.

Got me thinking about whether you can like someone's work but dislike them. The only other real example I can think of is Woody Allen, who has made some great films but questionable personal relations makes him a bit difficult to like (personally).

There are obviously more 'extreme' examples such as Roman Polanski and basically anyone from Operation Yewtree but that's a different issue really!

So yeah, can you square up liking someone's output whilst disagreeing with the person themselves? And of course any examples you can think of.

(and this is not a thread to discuss whether you think Kanye's music is good before people start :heh:)

2 late m8.

I was never particularly bothered about Kanye being a nob before - always felt like he was trolling the media rather than being particularly offensive. This year I feel like he's really jumped the shark on actually being a prick. That or he has genuinely lost it.

In any case I think Pablo is fantastic - Feedback, FML, are some of his best stuff. Shame about the sexism.

This boy's been putting out some real bangers of late, despite being an insufferable little shit for a long time. I might even be coming round to him as a person.

Oh yeah and on a related note, seeings as I loved their carpool karaoke - always thought James Corden was an immensely irritating character but he has found something with his singing in a car thing...

Orson Scott Card, Frank Miller, Mel Gibson, Lauren Hill (although I don't actually know if it's true that she said what she is alleged to have), Sean Penn, Clint Eastwood, Dr Dre...yeah, I can think of loads of nasty people who's work I like and/or respect.

I like to think that the art and artist are distinct, and you can appreciate one while holding an opposite opinion on the other. However in practice my opinion on one definitely influenced (though not dictates) my opinion on the other.

I find it works both ways as well. I'm more inclined to like or dislike somebody depending on my opinion of their work. We'll forgive a few sins when we admire their work, and we'll see the worst in them when we think their stuff is white. Conversely if we like somebody's character we're more likely to appreciate their work.

I hate Adam Baldwin. He's a gun-crazy, homophobic, sexist pig.

Jayne and Casey are wonderful characters. Finding out what Adam Baldwin is like hasn't altered how much I enjoy those characters.

Oh yeah I followed him for a short while on Twitter and man did I not agree with what he was saying.

Morrissey.

A friend of mine is a huge fan of him and we often get into discussions about the guy. We've now come to the conclusion that his music is top, but he's a very lame human being.

That's the one that springs to mind. I'll probably come up with a few others later on.

Oh yeah he's a complete dick. Good music though.

This is actually something we have in teaching practice - condemn the deed, not the doer. I can manage it in a classroom, but in private affairs I admit to finding it difficult to listen to the album of/watch the movie of someone I think is a dick.

Case in point: The Dark Knight. Superb movie, can't get past the fact that Christian Bale is an incredibly offensive human being for me.

I suppose that's hypocrisy, but I'm not too bothered, really.

Ronnie O'Sullivan

Undoubtedly the greatest snooker player ever... but I think the guy's a tit.

Most recent example was just this week when he turned down potting the final black to make 147, because it was 'only worth £10,000' and he didn't deem that worthy.

But I'll never forget the years Paul Hunter was fighting for his life with cancer and yet still turning up to tournaments, meanwhile Ronnie was whinging after every match about how unsatisfying he found playing snooker.
