Pokémon Go! (Android/iOS)

It seems like a massive oversight that places like Auschwitz feature in the game. Surely the developers would have realised how disrespectful it would be, seems so strange that they wouldn't have restricted the game when it came to such well known memorials.

So I've caught half a dozen Pidgeys, what should I do know? How do I know which one to feed candy to?

Also, what's the Transfer thing about? Why transfer them back to the professor?

It's almost like there wasn't much thought behind it...

I was playing proper Pokemon on the bus and I never felt so isolated. I play 3DS on public transport all the time and I've never felt so blatant.

Transfer is basically throwing them away - you get 1 candy for it.

You want the one with the highest CP (although size and weight may be important).

Interesting, thanks so I should maybe wait and catch a few more hoping for better CPs, then feed that one candy.

If I throw one away, do I get to keep the 3 candy I got from it?

Yes, you keep the candy from it.

I'm sure @Serebii can say if it's better feeding a pokemon before evolving it.

It's more like "it's almost as if the wild Pokémon locations are procedurally generated".

It's not like they say Auschwitz and thought "let's put Pokémon there". They are everywhere

We're not saying that they did that, we're just saying they should have had a few developers check to make sure that such well known and sensitive locations like Auschwitz were not part of the game.

Obviously they wouldn't have been able to make sure that every sensitive area was covered, but for ones that are so well known worldwide it seems like such a massive oversight on Nintendo, The Pokemon Company and Niantic's part.

It doesn't work like that. They can't just make it so Pokémon don't appear there. They appear everywhere.

I'm sure they could write something into the code that would restrict Pokemon appearing at places like that though. You write as if the developers have no control over the code. It might be procedurally generated but it's a human created computer application. A game like Football Manager generates thousands of new footballers and has code written into it that prevents them from having inappropriate names (e.g. a player called Adolf Hitler), i'm sure Niantic could do something similar for restricting Pokemon from cropping up as places like Auschwitz and the Normandy memorials.

Everyone's offended by everything these days. It's unfortunate, but it really isn't worth getting upset or annoyed about.

Exactly. Mind you, if they found a Koffing there...

I'm not so sure. I can totally see how people would get a upset if some random bloke started playing this while you're trying to pay respects. Especially if the jerk doesn't use headphones.

You definitely have to be mindful of others.

Or just don't play it in those kinds of places.

With the way the game works, the only thing they can really do to avoid situations like that is allow certain organisations/persons to ask to have certain Pokestops removed. Pokemon appearances are basically just random, determined only by a couple of basic environmental characteristics (near water, large grassy areas or built up areas).

I don't think weather comes into effect, does it?

Yeah they can, it's switched off for the whole of South Korea (and presumably North!) except for one town: http://www.theverge.com/2016/7/14/12183042/pokemon-go-south-korea-sokcho-holy-land

It would mean a lot of area around sensitive spots would be blocked, but justifiable IMO.

And as places can be request to be removed, it seems like they do have the ability to block out specific areas. Unless they just get a "sorry, no" response.

Places can request to be removed as PokéStops/Gyms, not for things not to appear anywhere near it.

As for the South Korea thing, that's evidence of an all-or-nothing type scenario for regions. Only way to remove Auschwitz would be to remove all local areas

I think it's right for some people to feel offended that a site that is supposed to honour and remember those brutally slaughtered in WWII is turned into a virtual playground. People are also offended when people take selfies and that kind of thing there because its disrespectful towards the intent of the site.

Hopefully Ninatic will just remove it and we can move on.

And just to be clear we can have differing opinions about this, was just presenting my view on the matter.

Wow, I don't even want to guess how quickly that thing will eat your phone's battery.

To be clear, I took issue with people being offended that Nintendo/Niantic didn't remove memorial sites from the game. Outrage is pretty much everywhere these days and in this case I think it's down to the players themselves not to be stupid and play in such areas.

Well, I'll put it this way: this is the most I've heard the word "Pokémon" in a day for at least the past five years, possibly more.

Bravo Niantic, Pokémon, Nintendo and Google. You didn't just dramatically raise interest to an all-time high level for an extremely well known franchise, you also did it whilst getting people to move about and socialise, an epitome of what the games are truly about. That and our Lord and Saviour, Helix

Kudos to them, no matter how well it did/n't test in the beta, it takes guts to release an app like this. It's one of those "lightning in a bottle" moments.

You know what, BBC? I take it back. Your news segments aren't unbearably cringe...

It could be a lot worse.

Just saw a wartortle about 15 mins away but my battery is only 5%. Someone need to invent a ZPM powered smartphone that can last for a long time.
