I dreamed a dream of times gone by

where no one care about on-line features

Sounds more like a nightmare, haha.

I use Twitter and Facebook all the time but have zero desire to post PS4 screenshots to it. A gaming social network like Miiverse is far more useful to me personally.

I agree with this, although I still don't bother with Miiverse either. Not fussed about these options myself.

I never really liked the Miiverse but one way I do like this stuff done is Steam's activity feed. Just a simple page in the client which shows what people have been posting, achievements they've got, games they've bought etc. I thought the PS4 was going to have something similar with their feed but unfortunately that one is very cluttered and doesnt show as much as I'd hoped it would.

I love posting screenshots/footage to Facebook. Suddenly you have a whole load of people who know nothing about games commenting it. Suddenly you have the most unlikely people talking to you about something like Mad Max or The Witcher. That's become a part of social gaming to me.

The feed on the PS4 is a piece of shit though. It's just an unfiltered dirge of un-targeted content.

Miiverse was/is a great innovation and a is a big plus point to Nintendo's online. Very clever idea and something that I missed when I first got my PS4.

Miiverse is the best (and in my personal opinion only great) thing Nintendo has done with online. Hopefully they'll start plugging it more into existing social networks in a wider way going forward.

But one console came six years before the other. It's like saying that we shouldn't expect phones to have 4G antennas because the Nexus One didn't.

It's not a noun, there is no definition of "proper" when it comes to online infrastructure. Can we say standard? Difficult given there's only three consoles, but in many ways Nintendo is behind the curve and when 2 out of 3 consoles do certain things, it's only natural people will say the third is falling behind.

Personally I'm not happy to accept a basic service when the majority (of a small sample) achieves much more.

That's not a fair, you're picking the one thing which paints it in a bad light. It's like me just picking the ability to download games as evidence of wii u having an amazing system... Disingenuine. It's like exactly what I said really, an old Nokia is not a proper phone because it doesn't do as much as the new ones...

As for being behind the curve/ agreed. As for falling behind. Agreed. As for achieving less. Agreed. I think 95% of people agree. It's just the sheer excessiveness of wifi u not having proper online. To being shamboloc etc especially as said opinions have been expressed hundreds of times already. And we don't know about the nx. So we just bang on about it... Like Nando implied, it really does drain the fun out of it all, and it certainly isn't a healthy debate/discussion.

Sorry. Carried on reading and the discussion had moved on. Nod my I'm was to but it's me who keeps bringing it back from the dead replying :)

Yes. I'm in the I love miiverse camp, and also like it is desperate to Twitter and Facebook. Different things for different networks, plus you can share miiverse posts to Twitter and Facebook if you want. Perfect compromise.

I think Nintendo have made huge strides with online slowly through this generation, and I think that's cause for optimism. I so think they are the best regarding dlc too (please don't turn this into an amiibo bash fest) - golf, kart, hyrule are all incredible examples of it.

I'd honestly say Nintendo have either not moved forward an inch or actually gone backwards online this generation.

Case in point is that in Mario Kart Wii you could form a party in the game and then search for games as a group. You can't do this in MK8.

I can't comprehend how some people don't want to talk to their friends whilst gaming online.

Yeah there really is no point in starting a party if you can't talk to each other. Talking and making jokes as you play enhances the multiplayer experience with friends.

Party chat is awesome, i just wish people wouldn't argue over semantics and wanting our beloved nintendo to be on a level playing field

my cheeky les mis post was just a nod to simpler times when all you worried about was how hard you had to blow the cartridge

Simpler times when gameplay was king

This is a really silly thing to say.

I'm sure I can speak for most social gamers here when I say that voice chat has done nothing but enhance the games and gameplay that is already there. Destiny 3 man fireteams on competitive Trials of Osiris provides one of the best social and gameplay experiences there is to be had - sharing tactics, information and, most importantly, the laughs, over voice chat makes this all the more fantastic.

Gameplay (I.E. A physics engine) isn't affected by online but enjoyment is.

Didn't you ever play with your friends when you were a kid in those 'simpler times'? Before you played online games didn't you socialise and enjoy hobby with others? Or did you ignore all multiplayer games? If so you're not qualified to contribute to discussion on social gaming.

Simpler times when all a mobile phone could do is call and text.

The ironic thing with all this is Nintendo themselves always talk about social gaming and experiences with others yet they go on to ignore features which encourage multiplayer experiences.

I think people are over reacting to light hearted posts here, I suspect Ronnie was on the same page as me, remembering when gamers didn't argue over semantics, what should be had, what shouldn't be had. neither of us want an end to online, neither do we think online hinders gameplay or affects it anyway

since the point went really over everyones head

stop fucking arguing! if a feature can be available it should be especially if fans and developers have asked for it

now get back to discussing the NX and stop fucking bitching about he said she said and well that word doesn't mean that to me so i'm going to rant

god damn it people have a snickers your cranky when your hungry

In regards to Nintendo's approach to online, I actually do think they have the right idea when it comes to a curated approach. Online voice chat amongst strangers is typically a complete cesspool, filled with offensive language and slurs (especially if the recipient is female sadly) and I love Miiverse as a whole (well, aside from the morons who don't understand sarcasm of course ;) )

With the NX, personally I'm just hoping for party chat at the OS level and nothing else. I don't want to voice chat with strangers and I don't think it's a good fit for the friendly atmos that Nintendo is looking to carve with their systems. Private party voice chat amongst friends is a must though and it's criminal that we still don't have it!

There is no issue though as with controls nobody is forced to participate in public chat. Leave it to the user to choose.

There's a good point to be made for there not being an option though...

Should someone decide to give it a try, they might find the experience so off putting that they may decide to never play online ever again... This is particularly likely if the player is female (and that makes up a substantial part of Nintendo's audience, much moreso than Sony and MS' one).

With player safety and hospitality being such a key focus of Nintendo's, I can understand there being no option for chatting with strangers in most of their games... (Chatting with people on your friends list however is a different matter).

Well to play devil's advocate and as a counter point i'd argue anyone so sensitive shouldn't be on the internet or they could mute the chat or report the players and they get banned.

I mean seriously if you are so sensitive you may leave the internet because of some mean words, surely you'd mute it or leave it quickly? you wouldn't stay until you were so offended you'd leave the internet?

reducing options/features/infrastructure/hookers and coke because a tiny minority of the potential customers could be offended is exactly whats wrong with society as a whole.

and all that is ignoring the fact that someone who is such a special snowflake probably has already been offended by the internet by now and wouldn't even be an online gamer surely?
