Ashley Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 (edited) [ripped from Not Always Right] This is only mildly related to the thread, but need to moan. So on Monday I had a meeting with a department in which they just wanted to blame everything wrong on the IT system. Fine, do that if you wish. They brought up that recently they were informed that they could right click and open a link in a new tab. This apparently changed their world and they were outraged that we never told them. I'm sorry, are we supposed to teach everyone THE VERY BASICS OF INTERNET BROWSING?! I don't expect people to be experts and yeah, a lot of people may not know that, but if we were to spend our time going over the very basics we'd never have time to do our actual work. Silly folks. Rummy Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 That you are. This is only mildly related to the thread, but need to moan. Man, when I realised/made the transition to realise a middle button/wheel click could do this shit for me; Mind = BLOWN. Was only like a bloody year ago too!
EEVILMURRAY Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 You can also hold down CTRL and click. #Lols.. Compared to the power of pressing the mouse wheel - your method is too time consuming.
jayseven Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 It's all about ctrl+t for me. Oh wait -- that just opens a tab, rather than opens x into a new tab. I'm out. Continue.
Diageo Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 If you don't have a mouse then ctrl + click is the only option.
Sheikah Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 If you don't have a mouse then ctrl + click is the only option.
Sheikah Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Oh, they call that clicking? Where's the click? Always thought of that as a tap myself.

Sheikah Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 And now it all falls into place. Totally forgot laptops had those.
Dannyboy-the-Dane Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 A lot of technological epiphanies happening in here.
Cube Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 If you have no mouse, trackpad or number pad (or any cursor-controlling device), then you can Tab to the link you want and Alt+Enter to open in a new tab.
Ashley Posted October 25, 2013 Author Posted October 25, 2013 Well this seems to be a revelation to many...so let's share these little tech-based hints and tips that others may not be aware of!
Ike Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 (edited) I used the wheel click to open a new tab while showing someone something and she was like "How did you do that?!". She's not exactly IT illiterate either. Some keyboard shortcuts in Chrome/Firefox, not sure about IE: CTRL + SHIFT + T = Reopen closed tab CTRL + L = Focus on address bar CTRL + K/E = Search from the address bar CTRL + ENTER when typing in the address bar will automatically add www. and .com. The only Windows shortcut I use most is WIN Key + L to lock my machine. Edited October 25, 2013 by Ike
Cube Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Here's one many don't know: Ctrl+Shift+Esc opens up the task manager directly, bypassing the Ctrl+Alt+Delete menu.
MoogleViper Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 SHIFT + ALT + T = Reopen closed tab I use CTRL + SHIFT + T. SHIFT + ALT + T doesn't work for me (in Chrome).
Ike Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 I use CTRL + SHIFT + T. SHIFT + ALT + T doesn't work for me (in Chrome). Oh yeah, it is CTRL + SHIFT + T. Was being stupid.
Diageo Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 A lot of people don't know that double clicking on a word selects a word and triple clicking on a word selects a paragraph.
ReZourceman Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 I am sure everyone will know this but it was a revelation for me when I discovered it a few months back. Wait for it. Windows Key + D for Desktop.
Yvonne Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 ctrl click is also often better if using a wacom where your non dominant hand is always hovering around modifiers. fucking windows D is the shit. Windows e for file browser btw.
MoogleViper Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 On N-Europe: ALT + S to post a reply. (On a similar note, when using the quick edit I often lose what I've done as I'll autopilot press ALT+S, which will take me to the "messaged entered is too short..." post reply page.)
Rummy Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 I am sure everyone will know this but it was a revelation for me when I discovered it a few months back. Wait for it. Windows Key + D for Desktop. I actually only got the D a few months back. Always had a 'show desktop' in the quick launch bar(and Win7 has the one in bottom corner built in). However at work no such luxury afforded, and it drived me mad for ages. Sadly, around the time I discovered the D, I also discovered I could add the quick launch bar(though this is recent after a big system upgrade dealie jazz). Here's one many don't know: Ctrl+Shift+Esc opens up the task manager directly, bypassing the Ctrl+Alt+Delete menu. I didn't! Banging stuff, I like to use/open Task Manager a lot, so that'll be handy if I remember! Also Chrome has its own task manager for tabs etc(helpful when something's being shitty) that iirc can be opened with a shift+escape from within Chrome. I sometimes need to use it to end Flash when it's monging out.
