V. Amoleo Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 The RAM is the only impressive thing specs-wise about the PlayStation 4. No consumer PC/laptop will ever use GDDR5 as system memory. Edit: That's not saying the rest is rubbish. I just don't think it's fair how people are shouting down @Serebii over it.
Cube Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 The RAM is the only impressive thing specs-wise about the PlayStation 4. No consumer PC/laptop will ever use GDDR5 as system memory. PCs require much better specs to get the same results as consoles.
-Dem0- Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 I'm waiting for more footage & info on Ground Zeroes (probably E3) and the future of the Metal Gear series.
drahkon Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 I love how everyone is bashing the PS4 one day after its announcement, months before E3 and even more months before its release. What did people expect? The cure for cancer? It's a console. Targeted at people who like consoles. Yes, PCs can do more, yes the WiiU has a controller that provides streaming from the console without a 200€ device and yes porn should've been a major aspect in the press conference. Nobody cares. Graphics are incredible for a console. And if the PS3 is anything to go by, its successor will have an amazing game catalogue to offer one or two years after its launch. I'm pretty Sure Sony and third parties will be able to show a lot at E3. And I cannot understand how people aren't blown away by this, because if this is an indication of the next console generation then I'll be happy to see what Microsoft has to offer, seeing as the rumored specs for Sony's and their console are quite simmilar. Gamers should take their heads out of their asses, get off the stupid 'fanboy-ship' and just enjoy how technology improves over the years.
V. Amoleo Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 PCs require much better specs to get the same results as consoles. Of course they do with the overhead of the OS and the fact they're multi-tasking devices. But with the switch to the x86 architecture they're more comparable now than they ever have been.

While I may have a preference to Nintendo, I get all the consoles and enjoy them. Last gen I played my 360 far more than my Wii. I try to stay impartial and the general consensus around the net is that the PS4 still doesn't reach the heights of higher tier PCs and it's somewhat unfair to go off t me just because of this
V. Amoleo Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 What did people expect? The cure for cancer? I thought that's what we were doing with Folding@Home on the PS3! :p
bob Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 and yes porn should've been a major aspect in the press conference. In every press conference from now on, i think.

Agent Gibbs Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 (edited) Apologies if this end up in a long post, finally able to post I found that really dull overall. I'm really excited about the capabilities of the console, Overall view about the event today: Console has a lot of potential. There is a serious possibility of Sony getting back into the swing of things with this thing. The openness of it, the community aspects, the actually decent hardware specification by console standards for their price range.. Looking forward to hearing more. The Wii U is going to have a hard time justifying itself and I can't wait to see Microsoft respond. But, a lot of it left me very confused. Why are we dealing with the tech demo shenanigans again? They very rarely are faithful to the final product, no matter who is showing it for what platform. Show us some gameplay, sheesh. The biggest offender of this complaint is the fucking dumbasses who thought it would be good to demonstrate the power of the console with a fucking face. Sure, it's impressive, but in what situation would allow just one fucking face on the screen in a video game to drain all of the consoles power? What about other characters? What about other faces? What about the scenery? Classic bullshit. Another thing that strikes me as odd is there apparent low standards for third parties stepping up to the mic. I'd laugh Square Enix out the fucking building if they came up to me and said that's what they were intending to show case. Destiny is a big deal considering the hype, so I'll let that slide. But c'mon, allowing certain over devs to come up to the mic and announce ports? Especially Diablo 3, I was expecting something decent after the guy was bragging about how making console games was in the studios blood. This is stuff they should have saved for E3. The first part of it was spot on, going through the mission statement and how the machine works, whilst showing some content. Maybe they just had it go on for too long? I don't know. I agree with that, overall it was dull, mainly because off all the bullshit tech demo's and monologues by the bald society. it could have been an hour shorter and 100x more awesome if it was, the filler bogged it down I did get the feeling that nothing much we didn't already know was announced it was more just confirming the leaks.......not such a bad thing but those leaks stopped a lot of shock value for me but that DS4 was sexual I will undoubtedly get one, but not at launch and definitely not at the rumoured price. Nintendo don't have too much to worry about here. regarding your first point.....WHAT PRICE? good lord don't leave me in suspense as for the second i'll come back to that I've just managed to watch the reveal. I'm not overly impressed. It felt like they were just saying "Me Too!" to everything. Can share things to Facebook from within games making the "first gaming social network with meaning". Which I'm guessing is trying to emulate Miiverse. Can use the Vita as a game pad for games. Which looked suspiciously like how one would use the Wii U GamePad with games. Has a camera which can detect depth. I know that Sony started the whole EyeToy thing but this looked like a "Me Too!" for the Kinect. Now you say that like its a bad thing, the way i see it is that now the PS4 and WiiU are very similar in the feature they offer AND unique gaming IP's, where as Microsoft and Next box now don't have nearly as much going for them, they have very few IP's left, Charge for online and won't offer off screen play.......if they restrict used games then well they are dead. I can see the lead console being the ps4, with things porting to WiiU and the next box, but the nextbox being the looser of this generation ...You have to be joking. You're actually worse than Choze. Congratulations. He could have one of those ridiculously expensive gaming laptops that cost between £3k and £10k The one thing that concerns me with PS4 (and rumoured NextBox) is that I might as well go buy a top end PC. That is a fear i have, but with a Ps4 its a little easier for most people to deal with and they won't have to worry about a game coming out their console can't handle anymore, i know my pc can't handle new games now and is in need of replacement, but with a console they last much longer till they need replacing..........well they seem to, for the average joe and that is more of the ps market, pc gaming experiences but with the convenience of a console Edited February 21, 2013 by Agent Gibbs
Cube Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 regarding your first point.....WHAT PRICE? good lord don't leave me in suspense The only rumoured price I've seen is £300.
Daft Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 Thanks. While I may have a preference to Nintendo, I get all the consoles and enjoy them. Last gen I played my 360 far more than my Wii. I try to stay impartial and the general consensus around the net is that the PS4 still doesn't reach the heights of higher tier PCs and it's somewhat unfair to go off t me just because of this I'm just going to deal with facts here. You like facts. In fact, you said this. Graphically, it's a nice step up, but my PC and laptop can do better and they aren't even top-range, and that's disappointing. Also closed specs have a massive advantage over scalable PC specs. He could have one of those ridiculously expensive gaming laptops that cost between £3k and £10k Yeah, good point, my bad. So Serebii, what laptop and desktop do you have? I wouldn't mind upgrading mine.
drahkon Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 (edited) For me it's because it's the same stuff as before, just with prettier graphics This has been the case with PC gaming since...well...the beginning of PC gaming. And exactly this is what the majority of gamers/gaming journalists/analists wanted. Fuck motion control, fuck revolutionizing ideas. Give us more power and more quality games. Sony (and Nintendo - in their own way) has given us this (the power, not the games...). Microsoft will give us the same (maybe with Kincet but whatever). The only thing that's missing is new IPs (maybe even older IPs like Crash Bandicoot, Banjo Kazooie, finally a fucking good HD Zelda or Mario, Metroid...). For consoles and for PC. In that regard every developer has to improve. Edited February 21, 2013 by drahkon
Agent Gibbs Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 Yeah, good point, my bad. So Serebii, what laptop and desktop do you have? I wouldn't mind upgrading mine. i can't tell if your being sarcastic, just like i can't tell if you knew i was being sarcastic.......its too early lack of sleep...can't comprehend this, was up late watching bald me masturbate on a stage He won't have one of those mind you, and now seeing that second quote you did its all but confirmed it ain't a money bags laptop did my first post make my views clear? i was underwhelmed because the filler made it boring, but solely regarding the PS4/DS4 and Killzone i am jizzing my pants off
Kaepora_Gaebora Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 The PS Vita is a very neat unit, it's an intelligent way to boost sales of something that deserves to be boosted. It is superior to the 3DS in hardware and therefore doesn't limit game developers as much in the graphics department. It's kinda sad that the inferior unit gets more big hitter support. Capcom fancy a word regarding Resident Evil Revelations Seriously though surely it doesn't matter how powerful a console is anymore, more what they can do. I was much more interested in what the console could do (share, spectating etc) than how much grunt it has under the hood, considering judging by the admittedly early demos and gameplay, the leap isn't as big as it used to be. Still I thought it was a fairly good showing in terms of what the console can do, though having watched it again I stand by my Killzone thoughts, looked generic and some of the physics looked naff.
madeinbeats Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 How much are people willing to pay for this out of interest? PC specs mean PC prices, and these costs will get passed on to the consummer at somepoint if not at the checkout, via subscription services. I can't see this costing that much less than the PS3 was at launch myself.

I can see the lead console being the ps4, with things porting to WiiU and the next box, but the nextbox being the looser of this generation You're right. It does mean that more features that are similar across the three platforms mean that more multi-platform games will make use of it but it also means they lose some of their uniqueness. Which I think is a shame. We may as well just have one console on the marketplace. Also, it hasn't been confirmed either way if the PS4 will have free online has it? Last I heard the rumours were that they were going to start charging for it in an expanded PS+. It would still beat Xbox Live Gold if Microsoft don't refresh that up for their next console though.
Hero-of-Time Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 For me it's because it's the same stuff as before, just with prettier graphics So, NSMBU then.
drahkon Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 How much are people willing to pay for this out of interest? If I keep my job I'd say 400€-450€. Otherwise...not sure. Probably won't be a day-one-buy then.

I do want to know his laptop's specs, though. There was a lot of awesome stuff that was only briefly touched upon but it is on February. It did get dull but this press conference was as much for developers and the media as it was for us. I think they revealed enough for now in terms of content, quality and variation. It was basically Sony throwing down the gauntlet. E3 will be much more tailored to us and it's four months off, there will be more to show.

All those long speeches where they said nothing but meaningless marketing buzzwords.
Fierce_LiNk Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 Conference was OK, but it was hardly the greatest thing I've ever seen. Sony didn't exactly steal the show. Barring impressive specs, if that was a Nintendo show the following would have been said: - Where were all the games? A fourth Killzone, is that the best Sony can do???? We want new IPs!!!! - Ooooh they've copied Kinect, lol - NOT HARDCORE - You need to purchase a Vita for off screen play WTF, no one's going to stump up all that money and then have to buy a Vita too to unlock it's true potential!!! - They didn't show the console, what's wrong with them!!! - I didn't see any demos by from (insert publisher that didn't show something) ^^^^^ That is exactly what would have been said had Nintendo done that exact conference. As far as I'm concerned, it was pretty much what I expected. It seemed quite a rushed showing, the graphics whilst impressive hardly offer the leap that the 360 did over the original XBOX and are definitely something that could be done already on a decent PC. But overall, I'm sure Sony fans will be happy with it as the specs were impressive and if you're a Sony fan you know all your favourite franchises will be coming to it. I was expecting Zechs to get torn to bits over this, but this is exactly what I was thinking, too. I was left at Square's showing. I had to laugh at their "please be excited for Final Fantasy at E3"...please. You could also see my blood boiling when Capcom took to the stage and mentioned briefly "their success" with the latest Resident Evils. I had to be held back at that point. It was pretty long, too. Started off a bit ropey but it got a bit more interesting once the games were being shown, but I wonder if it could have been half an hour shorter? I'm not impressed with the controller at all as I've never liked the Dual Shock/original controller design, and by now you would have expected Sony to have revamped it massively. Can't get used to that controller and I just don't like it. One thing I found was the lack of charm in any of that conference. I've always found Sony very cold, but I know some people like the way they do things, but they don't really speak to me. "Here is our controller, it does this, here are our specs, here is Killzone, look at how much is happening on screen." I can't quite put my finger on what it is, but they don't seem to have as much personality or charm as Nintendo, even in their conferences. If you're a Sony fan, it was a good show. It hasn't really done anything to say to me that I should choose a PS4 next gen, so I won't be getting one. Pleased that WatchDogs is coming to WiiU mind, that's the best thing about yesterday for me.
V. Amoleo Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 How much are people willing to pay for this out of interest? At the moment, with the little that we've seen, I'd say £350 to £400. I'm guessing that the £300 price reported by The Times, if true, would be without VAT anyway.
