madeinbeats Posted March 13, 2012 Author Posted March 13, 2012 (edited) To quote the legendary Blackadder: Sir, have you ever visited planet Earth? Now now; you can only have one entry into the 'Come-back of the Year' competition... don't get greedy... I get where @madeinbeats is coming from. It's getting ridiculous and is damaging Pub's and their worth to a local community. Unless you can find a shitty Wetherspoon's it's almost not worth going out drinking in London and surrounding areas unless you're minted/willing to spend a fortune. Yes, the mighty Wetherspoon's, where the beer is cheap and your arms stick to the tables. It ain't bad sometimes and can't complain about the price, but it's just not a real pub. Plus most of them don't show the footy and on weekends they are rammed and it's an arse trying to get served. This 5% tax will hit them too. They planned to open 200 odd new pubs but since the 5% news the plans are on hold!! That's probably well over 1000 new jobs down the swany. Their real ale festival starts this Wednesday I think, so more so worth a visit at the moment. Edited March 13, 2012 by madeinbeats
Iun Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Oh for goodness sakes... I already cared about this whole "Koseph Jony" thing this month, and now you want me to get all riled up about something else? Could you not have waited until next week at the very least? I'm all out of "giving a crap" right now.
Twozzok Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 (edited) Ladies and gentlemen, we have another winner tonight *ding ding ding ding ding*. Please stop :/ Yes it will. You're saying it's only £2 a night, but it was also £2 last year, and before that. I used to buy pay ~£2.20 for a pint of lager, now I pay £3.20. I'm only 21 for christ's sake. If that's not a big increase then I don't know what is. This is pretty much the point, if it carries on as is it will become a purely 'special night' event type of night, not a lets be sociable with mates thing. Unless you can find a shitty Wetherspoon's it's almost not worth going out drinking in London and surrounding areas unless you're minted/willing to spend a fortune. you forget Sam Smiths. EDIT: Also if the beer tax keeps going up 'spoons wouldn't be able to do Monday club. That would make me sad, who doesn't like £2 a pint on Fosters Edited March 13, 2012 by Twozzok
Rummy Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 EDIT: Also if the beer tax keeps going up 'spoons wouldn't be able to do Monday club. That would make me sad, who doesn't like £2 a pint on Fosters I thought Monday clubs only just recently returned? Was nicely surprised to get a burger and guiness for £4 today in my usual spoons, then another pint of guiness for £2! Haven't been able to drink as cheap as that for a while! Tbh I only really drink in Spoons due to cheapness and the increasing price of alcohols, I'm sure I used to go out much more.

You're the reason some people on here are in favour of a super tax... how dare you eat burgers on a Monday, Sir!!!
Rummy Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Lol, well compare it to paying £4.70 a pint somewhere in brick lane a week or two ago, for basically the only lager they had on tap and I'm not even sure it was actually a pint, I welcomed today's unexpected cheapness! I do think alcohol prices ARE getting slightly ridiculous, but then I think it's just one of them things.
Twozzok Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 A tenner for five fosters? I'm in. This tax would take that away from us. And the burgers, without the pints who would eat the burgers!
Jamba Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 True, if you're talking London prices then i agree. Some pubs i go to have prices under £3 a pint still, and thats in places in Cardiff. Think you'll find the prices are like this over most of the south and midlands of England.
EEVILMURRAY Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 As soon as beer goes anywhere near the £4 on a regular usage basis (IE the local pubs I go to as opposed to the wallet raping establishments in town) I shall continue to drink my regular amount. Hahaha, thanks for the laugh mate. Brilliant... I do wish I could say the same, although what you've been coming out with in response to other people's opinions is simply cringeworthy and pathetic. You've made your opinion known, some people don't agree with said opinion. Deal with it. Don't be a snobbish twat.
Diageo Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Seriously evil fuck off. We were getting over the pettiness.
bob Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 While I agree that the price of alcohol has been getting increasingly high over the past few years, it is nevertheless still a luxury item. Petrol I can understand people complaining about, since for most, travelling by car to get to work etc is a necessity, and without transport, they wouldn't have a job etc. There is no basic human right that we should be able to afford alcohol though. You might as well petition the government that 3D TVs are too expensive and they should cut tax on those so you can afford one. Because you want one. Having said that, i do think there are better ways for them to raise money, and better things to tax, but that's what you get with a Conservative government.

There's a difference between someone who wants an 'opinion' and someone who wants to troll because they have nothing better to do but spread negativity around in threads that bare no interest to them. Sorry if that makes me a 'snobbish twat.' Hugs,
Mr_Odwin Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Infracted, banned from thread. Note that this is not an excuse for everyone else to slate the dude.
Jimbob Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Think you'll find the prices are like this over most of the south and midlands of England. Hmmm, thats not too bad then. If a pint costs what 4 tins costs (basically, £4) then i won't be in the pubs no more. It will, to me be a lot cheaper to drink at home. I like the atmosphere of the pub, it does feel right drinking in one after a days work. I don't want to be forced out by government taxes. At present, i hear of a lot of places closing because customers just ain't coming out anymore, or as often. That saddens me, but there isn't a lot we can do. The government (more specifically, Cameron) wants us to use the pubs more. We can't if you keep raising the tax upon a pint.
Zechs Merquise Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 (edited) oh my.... no one's taking you seriously because you tell people to sign a petition, you don't want a discussion, you want signatures. People want to discuss it and you just get pissed and cause a load of shit throwing... well done successful topic... The BIGGEST reason for admission to a&e is accident and injury caused by being intoxicated. Smoking related lung cancer drains a whole heck of a lot of resources from the nhs. These things get taxed for that very reason. If you want to drink pay the price and quit yer yapping Yeah, smoking and drinking do have a huge affect on the health of a nation which does cost the NHS. But the fact that one in people in the UK is obese is a much bigger problem (not to mention an unsightly one). It's like a ticking timb bomb for the NHS, yet no political party or Government wants to tackle the problem of the obese - let alone tax their junk food! Binge drinking is 3 pints. It may reduce the amount drunk but there's no way it's going to reduce binge drinking. Binge drinking is three pints? I guess you can't handle your drink too well then! The fact of the matter is that local pubs that used to be the heart of the community are closing all over the UK which harms local communities and leads to jobs being lost. However supermarkets sell alcohol at ridiculously cheap prices - which is what most of the little yobs are getting pissed up on! I think Madeinbeats has made some really good points. Also for those who are equating smoking with drinking - that's a poor point. Smoking 5 cigs a day will most likely lead to you dying an early death. Drinking a pint of beer a day will have zero long term or short term affects on you. What's more, drinking a glass of wine a day can be good for you: http://www.health.com/health/article/0,,20410287,00.html Edited March 13, 2012 by Zechs Merquise
EEVILMURRAY Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Zechs, I think what Diageo may have been referring to with the three pint thing was the legal to drive thing? Unless one is driving, I would disagree also that going over 3 pints is binge drinking (unless you're aiming for much more) personally I'd consider 7-8 pints a limit for myself. After that things get a little hazy. Seriously evil fuck off. We were getting over the pettiness. Dude, chill.
Diageo Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Haha, no. Legal limit is less than a pint. The World Health Organisation has defined binge drinking as drinking six or more standard drinks (about 3 pints of beer) during one drinking occasion. http://www.drinkaware.ie/index.php?sid=2&pid=146&gclid=CIP__beC5K4CFQxB4Qod4StKYQ
Murr Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Well I never... apparently I binge drink most weekends then. When I actually consider it a few social pints.
Magnus Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Well I never... apparently I binge drink most weekends then. When I actually consider it a few social pints. The first step is admitting that you have a problem. :p

The actual quote from the source you cite states: "The World Health Organisation has defined binge drinking as drinking six or more standard drinks (about 3 pints of beer) during one drinking occasion. However some researchers have argued against this definition. As this level of consumption could occur over the course of an evening of eating and socialising it is clearly inappropriate to equate it with a binge." Drinking three pints in one evening is clearly NOT binge drinking.
Ramar Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Well I never... apparently I binge drink most weekends then. When I actually consider it a few social pints. You, me and a hell of a lot of people in this country who enjoy a few quiet ones at the weekend.

Obviously if you take 5 hours to drink 3 pints and you are eating, then it's not binge drinking. It doesn't specify how long you must drink the three pints. Regardless, the definition of binge drinking is 3 pints.

No one living in the real world would accept something as stupid as that.
Cube Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 drinking, binge A pattern of heavy drinking that occurs in an extended period set aside for the purpose. In population surveys, the period is usually defined as more than one day of drinking at a time. The terms "bout drinking" and "spree drinking" are also used for the activity, and "drinking bout" for the occasion. A binge drinker or bout drinker is one who drinks predominantly in this fashion, often with intervening periods of abstinence. Synonyms: bout drinking; spree drinking See also: Jellinek's typology (epsilon alcoholism) That's the definition of binge drinking from the WHO's website. The definition for it in the UK is twice the daily limit, but everywhere else has different definitions.
