"Plays exactly like the original"

I'm out.

Sure, this treatment is great for games like Monkey Island (due to the genre), but FPS games have progressed so much in the last generation that not updating the gameplay just seems incredibly lazy. Imagine The Twin Snakes if it had the improved graphics, but none of the enhanced gameplay from MGS2.

To be fair, Half-Life is still great. It's just that Halo was never that good to begin with. :heh:

And when they re-released Half-Life they updated the gameplay and not the graphics.

When they... what...? :hmm:

The only re-release I'm aware of is Half-Life: Source, which was basically the exact same game with prettier water and the physics engine from Half-Life 2.

I really don't see how you get 'updated the gameplay' from a new physics engine, as it has little to no effect on the actual gameplay. If the levels had been redesigned to take advantage of the new physics engine, then I would have agreed with you. :hmm:

I guess I don't see how FPS games have actually progressed this generation. Things that Halo helped pioneer like replenishing health (or shields or whatever) and only being able to carry two weapons at a time are standard today, but that's really all I can think of, and they're already there. Other than that, I don't really see what makes Halo antiquated compared to, say Call of Duty (except, possibly, that it has less scripted scenes).

The things that made the first Halo bad (reused levels/rooms, confusing level design...) were already bad when the game was new. It was always the multiplayer that made Halo stand out.

Blue Shift had new character/weapon models that could also be applied to the main game, yes. They went a pretty long way in improving the look of the game.

Do you guys know about Wikipedia?

It has loads of information about this sort of thing.

I think the switching between graphic from old/new is pretty awesome.

The geek in me really wants to know how they're handling that switch...

EDIT: That sounded kind of cunt-ish, it's not intended so.

Well this was a nice surprise. Just got my post and my order from Shopto arrived, didn't expect that at all. Apparently Tesco's are also selling it early, some picked it up yesterday from their local stores.

Just finished the campaign and found the whole thing boring as hell. I dunno if it's just me but I found the game hasn't aged well at all.

The levels are so repetitive it's unreal. Every corridor looks the same and I found myself going round in circles alot of the time. Not only that but the amount of backtracking you have to do is just stupid. Then there's the fact that I kept trying to sprint but of course there is no sprint button. :D Graphically the game could do with more polish, IMO. I've just come off playing MGS3 HD collection and the effort and polish they gave that was fantastic, while this doesn't look that great.

I will say that I did enjoy the new terminals and the cutscenes that they showed off. Other than that it was a very disappointing experience, especially as I used to love this back in the day. I guess somethings are best left in the past.

I'll pick this up when my brother gets it. For us, it's all about the co-op. We need to relive the some of the glory moments of the first game. There was one part where we were running away from the flood and I was out of ammo. The plan was for me to run ahead and close this massive sliding door while my brother stayed to hold back the horde. He would die but I'd be safe enough for him to respawn next to me.

He ended up holding them off quite well and ran back after me, he jumped through the closing doors with hundreds of the flood behind him and made it through the smallest gap ever just before it shut. One of my favourite gaming moments :D

That and the finale. Really looking forward to it!

Played through the first level and had a look around the multiplayer maps they've re done. I really liked it, had a nice nostalgic tinge to it all and the gameplay holds up pretty well. It would have been nice if they had included a few more maps, but this is sort of made up for by the inclusion of the awesome Headlong.

The graphics switch is really quite something. I can't believe the game used to look like that...I remember being amazed by those graphics at the time. Generally I think the game has aged very well in terms of gameplay, but I've yet to come up against the worst of some questionable level design. I'll see what my opinion is after I play Library :heh:

I echo iPaul, really impressed with this remake. Some of of the views look outstanding and in my opinion are up there with the best this gen. I personally think it holds up very well considering the actual game mechanics are exactly the same as they were 10 years ago.

Personally I was a little put out when I heard about that. People often bitch about the multiplayer but for my money, Halo has got better with each game in the campaigns. I'd have loved a 'remix' version with the expanded Covenant forces from Reach, plus stuff like vehicle boarding.

OK so I just played a bit of campaign and...well fuck me. It really is an absolutely stunning remaster. The HD visuals are nice enough but the audio! oh man. It's incredible. Really enjoying it all again, despite what I posted before. There are problems with the campaign- it does reuse environments, it does have some occasionally poor level design...but man, 10 years is a long, long time in gaming and it's a testament to the sheer quality of the core gameplay and AI that the game remains immensely playable despite those flaws. If it came out fresh this year, it'd still get really high scores.

I just finished my legendary run on co-op and the experience was a little better. We ran around using the bandana skull which gives you infinite ammo and nades. We mixed this up with the bigger explosion skull and then finally added the exploding grunts skull. All of this made for some great laughs and many a body flying over the screen. :D

Phew! Finally netted the achievements for the Library level. Why they chose to make you do this level without dying and within 20 minutes is beyond me. The level is regarded as the worst level in Halo history by many a fan and 343 go and stick these achievements on it.
